I think he was referring to the unused music. Lets all get our red teacher pens out!

Listening to the Fellowship and Towers CR DVDs now to wet the appetite.

Not sure if this has been posted here before, but here is a great interview with Maestro Shore where he discuss a bit about the CRs among other projects...

Here is an interesting blog entry by Kristin Thompson the author of the recent book: "The Frodo Franchise"in which she talks about the CR's.

Hello everyone, I decided to bug Doug with an email and he replied with a bit of info for you guys to read (he stated he would be back as soon as possible to vouch for it).

FROM DOUG:
I mentioned over the weekend that Smeagol's transformation into Gollum was actually scored, and that that music will be on the set. That's one of the more prominent pieces of unused music, but it's by no means the only one. For example, the Orcs' attack on Osgiliath was originally one unbroken sequence in the film. You'll get to hear how that originally played out as well... nothing like a little more violent / tragic music to spice up the set, right!?

That's fantastic news! I already feared they would go for the edited versions, since that correlates with the idea to retell the movie.

And I'm really curious what the unused bit for Gollum's transformation sounds like. I always thought there was some link missing between Gollum's music in TTT and ROTK. Maybe this is it.

You have been around during the past two years and have heard the CRs, no? The musical story was always told from the original point of view of Howard Shore, un-edited, so why the heck would they change that now?! Sometimes, you make no sense.

Unfortunately Doug stated nothing on the smeagol transformation music, I would have loved to known how eerie I hope it will be, but look to his coming at first light on the fifth day, at dawn look to the east (Just throwing a quote in there, not trying to imply anything). I tried to get a few track titles out of him (for those who want to know what they are) and any info on a PR, but Dougs a hard one to break. But it all helps to make the wait that much longer so when the day does come that we get this information the relief will be great.

If the Osgiliath battle plays continuously, does the CR represent the original cut of the film with Gandalf and Pippn arriving at Minas Tirith during the retreat?

I'm intrigued as to how 'The Lighting of the Beacons' fits into this assembly.

???

Does anyone (as in Doug himself) know beyond the general relative statement "They sold well!..." just how many (approximately, of course) FotR and TTT CR's have been sold so far? A friend asked me and I do not remember anyone here actually providing some quantitative answer...? Thanks...

Well, FOTR had a few intact film edits, and Doug himself said that it wasn't decided yet how to deal with music that was written for a different cut of the picture, and edited in the final film.

I remember reading something Doug said a while back (I can't remember what it was) that gave me the suspicion/feeling that Bilbo's Song would be on the CR. We'll have to wait and see I suppose, but it would be fitting since that piece is the concluding variation for the Hobbits.

If it doesn't end up on the CR it should surely end up on the rarities disc(s). I just know that it will have a home at some point

I just read Doug's marvelous review from 2003 of the original "Return of the King" score album, and I really appreciate it a lot more now that I've become so familiar with the score. It has also, for better or worse, prompted much more excitement about the imminent release of the CR.

Hopefully some of you will enjoy it as much as I did:

I don't think that Doug intended it to go that way, Michael...

One piece of nagging, since it actually and truly irritates me: 230 minutes of music would have fitted on three discs. They would have full to the rim, yes, but if this is a reason to increase the eventual price of this set, I will not be a happy camper. And you know what happens when Germans aren't happy campers...

What do you mean? From how he put it, I was thinking, "Ah! So we'll have a press release next Tuesday." Only on an off chance did I decide to check HowardShore.com.

... Or do you mean my lack of MANIACAL excitement? I'm a fairly sedate person.

Also I just noticed, we will have Liv Tyler's House of Healing song as well. (This of course only makes sense, since it was, after all, in the film.)

(Diploma-thesis-induced stress makes me a bit cantankerous these days, so apologies in advance for every irrtated-sounding post)

Well, I guess if Doug had wanted to be more specific or make us aware of the announcement over at howardshore.com, he would have done so.

Of course, on the other side, any of us would have seen that annoucement before the day got much older, so...I guess no harm's been done.

Christian, back to forcing that f*****g Adobe Photoshop to do what *I* want it to do! Grrrrrr.....

Well, it's pretty much exactly what happened last year...

Doug: "Tomorrow."

Then Marian S. broke the news of the press release. No one was too upset.

November 6th is sooner than I expected--this is great news! I am also kind of glad that they didn't dilute the excitement of the official announcement by including the MSRP, so we can all be purely enthusiastic for now and then freak out in a few weeks when we find out how much it's all going to cost.

(Although I should add that for me it will be worth it at just about any price. I am personally ready to pay about $100.)

Shouldn't the cover on ROTK be of Minas Tirith and Mordor since it is the ending of sauron and as the title states the return of the king.
