by dangerboy on 10/12/2004 favorite track: 13 I love the film and find that the music is well suited for every mood in every scene and every mannerism of each character. My fave tune on this disc is definitely "The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen - which also happens to be the soundtrack to Ms. Cuthbert's entrance into the film. Although the music from this piece is a hands down 5 out of 5 stars - we the consumer lose out, for there are many songs left OFF the album. For example, pieces by Elliot Smith, Mark Kozelek, The Red House Painters and Donovan. Ironically enough, the music of the above artists had the most impact in the film, especially a well-known tune by Brits, The Verve. Come on, you remember the album from the mid-late 90s "Urban Hymns," right? While Emile and Elisha are enjoying a dance at prom, the relaxing, melodic sounds of "Lucky Man" pour out in the background. Honestly, this album would have been much better had we left out the well-knowns, such as "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Take a Picture" and inserted the awe-inspiring tracks that elevated this movie to more than just a teenie-bopper flick. Don't get me wrong, I can tap a keg and jam out to Skynyrd with the best of 'em, however I would have loved to have seen just a little bit more artistic integrity while compiling the actual soundtrack. My final judgment stands at 4 out of 5 stars, due to lack of judgment on song selection.
by wildsurfchica on 4/18/2004 Every song chosen for its respective scenes really enhanced the movie experience. Like an earlier comment, maybe it is because Elisha is the star of the film that I love it so much... but the music is awesome, and I love the soundtrack. I can't wait to buy the movie as well!
by cartoonist_at_work on 4/21/2004 favorite track: 2 OK, the soundtrack CD is pretty good, but it's missing a lot of the good tracks from the movie like "Lucky Man" (the Verve), "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" (the Darkness) and a few others. Otherwise, the CD is pretty good. I'm only giving it a three because I'm damned angry it doesn't have the other songs! The movie was amazing though.
by chbaker on 4/23/2004 favorite track: 20 This is one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a long time. I was digging the music all the way through the movie, and I'm shocked that "Baba O'Riley," "Under Pressure" and "Lucky Man" aren't on the soundtrack CD.
by monifranklin on 4/25/2004 The main song in the film by David Gray, "This Year's Love" doesn't even appear on this CD. What crap.
by bcsatwvu on 5/4/2004 The movie is great and the music in the movie is superb, but the soundtrack CD (although still very good) came up a little short.
by brianj007 on 5/4/2004 favorite track: 12 Hello there again guys, I'm back again to give another review of the CD. I now officially own the CD, and yes I do have to agree with you guys, this CD is far from complete. There are many great songs left out, so I've dropped my rating to 3 stars. Nevertheless my favorite track is still "Get Naked" by Methods of Mayhem. One of the songs that was NOT included in this CD is Lapdance by N.e.r.d. Cheers. :)
by saracmd on 5/10/2004 After listening to this ST over and over again, there are not a lot of songs that I like. The music heard in the movie was excellent, but most of the good stuff was not included on the CD. I find a lot of the music on the CD is unknown. Either way I listen to it once in a while. I must agree that "Get Naked" is also my favorite track. I was very let down though that "This Years Love" by David Gray was not included - should have been!!!
by wildsurfchica on 5/11/2004 I have dropped my rating as well. However, the reason why some of the bigger songs aren't on there ("This Year's Love," or "Lucky Man" or "Lapdance") is probably because it was too expensive to license the rights for those songs. Sad, but oh well. Still such a great film - I downloaded the rest of the songs that aren't on the CD. :)
by Stx254 on 8/29/2004 favorite track: 3 I have to say...the movie made the soundtrack CD seem much more promising that it actually is. I was quite disappointed with it. The CD didn't have the song which was in the begining of the movie and the song that played while Matt and D kissed in the movie. These were two of the best songs in the movie.
by mmcdon00 on 8/30/2004 favorite track: 15 I just recently bought this soundtrack, and I feel that it is absolutely disgraceful. The CD does nothing to enhance this great movie. Not like it needs it though. The music in the movie was great. However, so many of the songs I liked that were played in the movie are not on the soundtrack. Lakeshore Records is an embarrassment to this movie.
by ljacoby on 9/3/2004 The soundtrack in the movie is amazing - one of the best I have ever heard. But on this CD some of the best songs were left out in favor of some stupid techno crap. For example, "Under Pressure" by Queen and "Teenage Wasteland" by The Who is missing. I can not understand the reasoning for this.
by grizzoshouse on 9/6/2004 favorite track: 2 This soundtrack is great, but there are a few songs from the movie that I would love to have on the soundtrack CD. Most notably is "This Years Love" by David Gray. It is the song that is playing the first time Matt and Danielle kiss and when they are in the limo by themselves after the prom scene. This soundtrack is a must buy.
by ahiti2 on 9/9/2004 I would just like to say that the producer of the soundtrack should make another CD and include the songs that were not on this first soundtrack CD. Then sell it in a two-pack CD with this original soundtrack CD. Why? Because I expect ALL the songs that were in the movie when I buy a sountrack album. Thanks.
by Spartan_117 on 10/12/2004 favorite track: 1 The original score by Paul Haslinger (and "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd) is the only stuff on this CD worth getting. Personally, I'm not a big fan of various artists soundtracks, because most of the time, forty or sixty percent of it is just blaring, ear-splitting noise and "singers" who sound like they're trying to stay awake. Oh, and another thing, I have NO intention of seeing this movie!!! I only want this CD for the score, which by the way sounds like a mix of John Powell and a pinch of Brian Tyler... and I WISH MORE SCORE BY PAUL HASLINGER WAS INCLUDED OR RELEASED! This guy is AWESOME! After listening to his score for Underworld (which I also have not seen) I'm thinking, GEEZ! This guy is HOT! And after I found out that there was score on this CD, I was like, OK, I'm getting this. Sure, there's only five tracks of score and only one good song, but it's worth it! Paul ROCKS! PLEASE RELEASE A CD FOR THIS MOVIE WHICH IS ALL MUSIC SCORE!!! Ah, darn. So long as I'm dreaming, I might as well listen to Underworld again.
by brianj007 on 4/15/2004 favorite track: 12 The music for this movie was chosen very wisely, I agree with most of the tracks. Excellent stuff, or maybe it's because Elisha Cuthbert is the star from the film that makes me like it so much... I don't know. My favorite track would be "Get Naked" from Methods of Mayhem, but I like the other tracks as well equally, except for a few that I haven't listened to yet. OK, that's all from me. I'd like to hear everybody else's comments though. Elisha ROCKs!!
by cjmitchell on 1/23/2005 favorite track: 19 My favorite song from the movie is "This Year's Love" by David Gray... the song that's not on the CD. It would be great to have more of the songs that made this movie so much more than a teen high school flick. Nevertheless, this soundtrack should still impress you with artists like Sneaker Pimps and Filter, and songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Get Naked." Being eclectic, I loved the great variety in songs on the CD. The CD portrayed the movie for what it was seen as all too much: a teen movie. But... if this review makes you skeptical and you're starting to think the soundtrack CD is not worth the money... then just think about this quote from the movie: "The juice is worth the squeez."
by lucas101_2002 on 3/23/2005 Is it that the licensing for these songs is too expensive or is it a ploy by the producers? Thinking that if we like the music in the movie, we'd think the songs are on the soundtrack and buy it... those idiots. Now that would be respecting the customer! The movie was an excellent twist in a dead dog genre, loved the music for the same reason. Like everyone else I wanted the Who and Queen and the long list of omitted big-hitters. If u spent on the licensing, u'd make it back in the sales. *no rating* by Spartan_117 on 4/2/2005 Paul Haslinger's five score tracks, Take A Picture by Filter and Sweet Home Alabama are all that's worth listening to on this.
1. The Plan - Paul Haslinger. This is a really cool track, with a science-fiction/thriller feel with a keen synth beat which reminds me of John Powell's work on Paycheck. My only regret is it runs 1:03.
2. Take A Picture - Filter. Not a bad song by Filter. My favorite part is the guitars, and the length.
3. Something In the Air - Thunderclap Newman. I only listened to this eyelid-gripper once. And I'm NOT listening to it again! BOR-RING!
4. Peeping Matt - Paul Haslinger. Another pleasing bit of synth from Mr. Haslinger. Again with a mysterious science fiction feel, even more so than The Plan, but this track runs ten seconds below a minute.
5. Dick Daggers Theme - Pornosonic. An okay instrumental. It would be great if it didn't have that stupid 'HI THIS IS RON JEREMY! YOU'RE LISTENING TO PORNO-SONIC' right at the beginning.
6. Dopes To Infinity - Monster Magnet. Typical rock song. All guitars (which were actually okay), all throat. No depth at all. Easily skippable.
7. Carpe Beachum - Paul Haslinger. I wish this was longer! 40 seconds is too darn short for such a pleasant piece of music!
8. Electric Lady Land - Fantastic Plastic Machine. What's THIS? Some renegade from the radio tubes of the 1930s? It sounds like a bunch of squealing runts somehow holding the tune in a bucket with moronic lyrics!
9. Break Down the Walls - Youth of Today. I wonder who this group were so mad at when they performed this no-show. Honestly, they sound infuriated! As if they're holding a grudge on someone who did something terrible to them and they're out for his scalp.
10. Jump Into the Fire - Harry Nilsson. This track DRAGS. ON. FOR. EVER! It's got to be at least six minutes worth of sheer boringness.
11. Spin Spin Sugar - Sneaker Pimps. Wait. Is this even about anything? When they're not saying things that you can't understand it's just "spin spin sugar". Makes no sense at all.
12. Get Naked - Methods of Mayhem. Everything i hate about rap. Describing nudity. Constant cussing. The genre of music. SKIP THIS TRACK AT ALL COSTS!
13. The Killing Moon - Echo and the Bunnymen
A good departure from that awful Get Naked, but still an eyelid-gripper.
14. Big Muff - Pop Deluxe. Few words describe this. Boring. Senseless. Lifeless.
15. Sparrows Over Birmingham - Josh Rouse
It's amazing how people actually LIKE this garbage. Torture to the ear and the mind, that's what this is.
16. BankMeltdown - Paul Haslinger. Ahh, finally, after all that torment, another great track by Haslinger. I love the way it builds up and builds up, and then a surprising children's choir kicks in... and then it calms down with a restful piano solo. My hat's off.
17. Think Twice - Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herren Band. This track has some neat synthesizers in it, but not quite worth wasting seven of your minutes listening to it.
18. Sweet Home Alabama - you know who. Well, you know all about this one.
19. The End - Paul Haslinger. This is a really warm, peaceful, and, above all, overlooked work of art, which has more of a drama sound than comedy. Great way to end an album. Even one so monumentally stupid and boring as this one.
Bottom line: the score is the only real standout. There's only 7:45 collective minutes of score but it's worth spending the money.
by cdjungersjr on 4/17/2005 I was so disappointed with the CD I almost threw it out the window. Every song that was left off should have been included and the works of Paul Haslinger should be burned and forgotten. What a let down!
by Bryantvince815 on 9/13/2005 Loved the movie and the soundtrack, but was upset by not seeing "This Years Love" by David Gray on the CD. The song is featured twice during climactic moments of the movie.
by noreply on 11/3/2005 I thought it was an OK CD at the time it came out, but now it's just collecting dust. Most of the songs on it aren't memorable. The song most people think is "Teenage Wasteland" by The Who is not on this CD. The name of that song is "Baba O'Riley." Another notable sonog I wish was on the CD is "This Year's Love" by David Grey.
by coachrich2002 on 11/5/2005 favorite track: 2 The song "Take a Picture" fits into this movie more perfectly than any song in any other movie ever. Great movie, great soundtrack.
by sowersch on 12/23/2005 favorite track: 10 I bought this soundtrack because the music director for the movie was a genius. The music fit the movie perfectly. The one song that probably defined the movie is "This Year's Love," the one playing when they were making love in the limo and when they first kissed. What idiot would leave this off the CD? For some reason, soundtrack CD producers decided to put the no-name songs on the soundtrack - the ones no one remembers from the movie. What a jip! These are the songs that I wanted and the ones I thought I was buying:
1) Obviously the David Grey song. It is such a drunkenly romantic song.
2) The song playing when they came out of the prom and got in the limo and celebrated with champagne. It added to that triumphant moment perfectly.
3) Vulayucushay - or whatever that french word is! This song was playing at the speech contest when he was making an ass out of himself because he was high on ecstasy.
4) The Counting Crows song that was playing when he gave her the picture she drew of herself at the porn convention in Vegas. Such a great selection to go along with that scene.
Working in the music industry, I cannot understand why producers would leave these songs out. There is no cost to put them on the soundtrack. The publishers would want the songs on there, and so would the record labels that owned the copyrights to the recordings. Everyone would win and make money. This is very confusing and very disappointing.
by bwunn on 5/11/2006 I liked the songs on the soundtrack, but like everyone else, I am very disappointed not to see certain songs on it. I'm able to figure out what songs in the movie I liked, which is a pain, but have not been able to figure out the one they play when: well, they are in school, and it may be after he figures out she is a porn star. It could also be after they have problems, and he misses her. It has the word "angel" in it. That's all I can remember, but it kills me that I can't figure it out. And for this pain.... a bad rating.
by joeyhatch11 on 2/7/2007 HAHAHAHA... I've just spent a good part of tonight looking for the name of the song playing when they were walking in at the prom. After reading your reviews I've found what I was looking for, plus came to find out that I already have it on my Ipod. You tend to forget when you have 4000 songs already on it. But thanks. Great movie. Loved it. add a review
