    Yaaay!

As I read the annotated score to "A Coronal Of Silver", in which Doug describes that the Fourth Age of Gondor theme resembles the Minas Tirith theme, I realise that the Minas Tirith theme and the Grey Havens theme (which also strongly resembles the Fourth Age theme) could represent the two opposite fates that the Fourth Age is bringing.

The Minas Tirith theme on one hand, (better know maybe as "Anduril") with its majestic tone, could describe what Gondor once was and what it will become again.
The Grey Havens theme on the other hand could describe the sacrifices people have to make so that a new Golden Age can become a reality.

Just in case it got lost in the last thread, I just wanted to reiterate that there seems to be a slight mistake in the Annotated Score - its not a huge problem by any means, but I think Doug has got Gorbag and Shagrat mixed up! I think general consensus has Gorbag as the orc and Shagrat as the Uruk Hai, Gorbag being the one who is stabbed by Sam.

Again though, it's of minor significance, because Doug should be commended for some fantastic work yet again. Now hopefully I'll be able to actually listen to it by the end of the week!

Lol I hadn't actually considered that!

Anyway from the notes it seems like there's a considerable amount of unused material on this release, and it got me thinking; given the relatively large amounts of unused music in TTT and ROTK Complete Recordings compared to a quite small amount for FOTR, does anyone think that the idea of implementing unused music was not fully realized for the FOTR release, or is it simply a case that there was not as much for FOTR and everything relevant is on there? Obviously this is just speculative, as I have nothing to go on, it's just a thought. I suppose the Rarities disc will reveal a lot.

So the big choral piece heard in the Prophecy and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields is actually Mordor's second Fourth Age theme (the first one being the march that plays when the Orcs march from Minas Morgul), "The Power Of Mordor". Cool!

Since there is still some Shagrat / Gorbag dissension out there, and since we are using a number of Wikipedia links, I went with the Wikipedians' take on just who is who. Now, no doubt since I've mentioned this, someone will go and change Wikipedia... But, we're doing our best to maintain consistency anyway.

    Gotta run... Podcasting!

    -Doug

PS -- I would hope that, with the release date so near, and streaming sites already giving you an early glimpse of the music, people will remain respectful and stay clear of unscrupulous peer-to-peer sites for the next week. That's all I'll say on that topic.

    Just feed him a fish

FYI, "Frodo's Song" is not a joke, it's a choral piece written for the Grey Havens mentioned in the Annotated Score.

It better be on the rarities disc, otherwise it would be infinitely cruel to mention it and then go "neeener, neeener"

    @topic:
I really looking forward to "Eowyn's Dream".
The main titles have allready played in different streaming sites. So there won't be any suprise.
Normally the box would allready be in my hands. Now I have to wait til next year and on Thursday I go on a trip WITHOUT the CR.

By far the most fascinating discovery in the Annotated Score was the part about the musical pattern of "Failure and Redemption".

I'm sure there are people out there who will say it's overinterpreting, but if it's intended by Howard Shore, it's hardly an interpretation, isn't it?

I would not spoil my RotK experience by listening to it before hand. It will be something brilliant to open the box when it arrives, put the first CD in the player and just enjoy the music that I have been waiting for so long. This is the end of the journey and I want to savour it!

Waiting is part of the fun of this experience although this "fun" has been stretching thin over the last few weeks. But I think I can manage another week by reading this Annotated Score.

-Mikko who also has 2 John Williams concerts to attend this week. Maestro of course will not be there (as I live in Finland) but his wonderful music will certainly alleviate the wait-

Well I've given in and decided to thumb through the first few pages of the annotated score - I don't think I'm technically cheating

The booklet looks great and congratulations and thanks to Doug for a wonderful read once again. I hope the critics who will be reviewing the CR over the next couple of weeks realise that this resource is available.

The In The Making note on page 10 relating to The Lighting Of The Beacons has cleared up the conundrum about the different versions for me.

Edit: I wonder if Shore put in a quick reference to himself in the music for The Chalice Passed cameo scene. That would be the Great Ear theme I suppose ( apologies). Here's an excerpt from the annotated score that didn't make it into the final draft.

    quote:

    In The Making

Shore originally wrote a short piece for the The Brave Guard of Rohan who featured second from the left in the crowd behind the drinking-game. The piece, which Shore agonised over for 3 weeks, included a soaring rendition of a theme solely for the character which, sadly, was cut at the last moment. Featuring swirling strings, roaring brass, tumultuous drums, a deafening hardanger fiddle statement, and aleatoric vocals by Renee Fleming, the London Voices, and a Maori rugby team choir, Peter Jackson ultimately decided that the 1.5 second piece distracted from the drinking game. Heard here for the first time on CD is the edited version.

I think there's been a misunderstanding. The only download being discussed is the Annotated Score, which Peter provided us with the link for. "Channels" = none other than our very own Peter K, and the link is in the first post of this very thread.

Please everyone, let's make sure we read the thread properly before starting more arguments.

With that hopefully out of the way, I've started reading the Annotated Score. Thanks Peter!! It seems you are the one with "channels". :-D

Why would you even feel the need to post that here? Can we all agree that we will not discuss this on the forum? Discuss in private all you want. And 'discuss' includes ANY mention of sites or activity, imo. That's all I'll say on the matter. I was one who got into it last time and I don't want to rehash it over again. For those who weren't here last time, the point I will make again is, by discussing illegal file sharing openly on a forum, you make it difficult for people who need to maintain a professional (or moral) distance to the activity. I won't hang out on a board that discuss or encourages file sharing.

Thorf, I agree... I have no idea what's being discussed here. The annotated score showing up on p2p sites? The best download version of the annotated score is right from the wbr/reprise website. Who'd want it from anywhere else?

Now this is frustrating. Amazon.ca sent me a message today that there is another delay in the CR. I check out the site and instead of a release date of Nov 20 or any other release date it simply says 'out of stock'. I pre-ordered within the first few days it became available on amazon.ca. I have a bad feeling about this. But while I go and sprout an ulcer over whether I'm going to hear this before 2008, congrats to the rest of you who are getting it soon.
    Argh.

Oh, and Doug, do you have plans on sticking around the forum for some months after the release of ROTK and/or your book, I have some FOTR and TTT questions but I don't want to post them in a time when they'll simply be lost in the excitement of the new release.

Question: Doug, in the Annotated Score, you write that the track "For Frodo" concludes with a bold french horn statement of the History/Evil theme hybrid.
But: as far as I can hear, it's simply the History theme of the Ring.

I realise that both themes are tightly interwoven, but it's still just the History theme.
    Unless of course I hallucinate.

Will there ever be a chance to buy a book with the annotated scores from all 3 release printed out? I just hate the way they look printed on normal printer paper and I also hate reading them from a .pdf file. I would also love to have them in a nice hardcover book. Well, as I understand it, the book is going to contain all the annotated score information and MORE, and I'm quite sure it will be in a simply lovely format. So, you shouldn't need to be worried about that.
