Yeah, the first x-mas in years without a Lord of the Rings-set under my "white tree". That sucks.

I watched FOTR on TV today, the theatrical cut of course, and boy was it bad!
Not the film itself, but the way some scenes were cut. They cut the "birth" of Lurtz, Saruman's line "But now you've chosen the way of pain" (something like that), two thirds of Boromir's death and the subsequent fight between Aragorn and Lurtz entirely.
Even the close-up shot of the Balrog roaring into the camera! What the hell?
Plus endless bits in Balin's Tomb and Amon Hen.
I tuned in after the first half hour, god knows what they did to the prologue!

To be fair, this was aired in the afternoon, and the uncut version was on last night (at least that's what I assume, I had it running while I was on my computer), but either play it as it is or don't play it at all!

Two Towers and ROTK will be on the next week and the week after, and I'm planning to boycott this hackslaying.

On a positive note: I never realised how many alternate cues there are in the theatrical version, and I quite enjoyed it.
As paradox as it sounds, it felt like hearing brand new versions of old pieces because I haven't watched the theatrical cut since the extended film came out.

Well, some people seem to be benefiting. There's some guy on Amazon UK Marketplace selling this set for over £114 ! Claiming it to be very rare.

Oh and Amazon themselves have now told me that they doubt they will ever get the sets in.

Surely that can't be right? They are making more of these aren't they?

My order was canceled for the third time now. I placed orders at amazon.de, amazon.uk and the amazon-marketplace. I tried to find the music at the german iTunes-store too. But didn't find it. I'm tired.

I feel badly for you folks who don't have this release yet, with seemingly no fulfillment in sight. I mean, sure, the packaging is hand-assembled, but they should be cranking these out to meet the demand. Apparently they're not concerned about setting any sales records!

In any case, I listened to my ROTK:CR while organizing the kitchen pantry and laundry room closet today. It's the first time I've had a chance to listen to it all the way through since well before Christmas (I had to set everything else aside to listen to Christmas music, of course). What an experience it is! It has so much power and emotion, perfectly capped by the gentle benediction of "Bilbo's Song" to send you on your way at the end.

Speaking of the ROTK:CR, or things related to it, I saw Sissel on TV on Christmas Eve. She was performing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. What a voice!

I suppose if it's 'exclusive' that there would be no chance of sharing it with those of us who can't make it?

    Would puppy dog eyes help?

Well, I'm quite sure some informations and concerts and "Pre-concert"-lecture-reviews will seek through and get on all the filmmusic-boards.
Speaken so, you will definitely get some impressions of what happend during this event but of course your going to get the most exclusive look by attending personally!

Hello all and Happy New Year!

I was lucky enough to get the CR for Christmas. I've just managed to listen to the whole thing once and am now going through it again slowly. I'm glad I stuck to my so-called RotK-diet as I hadn't heard some of the sequences in years and was pleasantly suprised by them.

One of the most interesting things for me at this early stage of listening is the use of really dark textures in the orchestration (e.g. in tracks like The Foot of Orthanc and Osgiliath Invaded). I don't even have a surround setup and I was amazed by the level of variety and detail that give each track a special quality.

I know it's all been said before but Howard Shore's work on these soundtracks has been remarkable, with each having a unique tone and texture that keep you going back for another listen.

The only problem I've found is the short pause in the Grond stereo track on the DVD. I know it was mentioned on Doug's blog but I was wondering if anyone here has got any responses from Reprise on this?

I hope people don't have to wait much longer for their copies.

Thanks once again to Mr. Shore and Mr. Adams and all involved in another great soundtrack release.

    All the best,
    ruckus

I wonder how long it will be until I get a copy. I wish it could happen sooner.
My main problem is that my parents ordered the CR through Circuit CIty online and its not an extremely reliable source to get stuff like that (although I did get other things shipped from there as XMas gifts that were similar).

I just hope it becomes available...

Altough I didn't want to pay customs, I finally gave up and ordered the set through amazon.com six days ago. I just got an e-mail that my order is delayed. New stock will arrive in the next few weeks. This is a marketing nightmare. I'm beginning to understand people who try to get the set by "other means".

    For everyone interessted:

There will be another "Fellowship of the Ring"-Live Performance-Concert in Munich, Germany, on March 26th 2008. Link: http://www.muenchenticket.de/vorstellung.jsp;jsessionid=A1E654F50B62489CB25F 2761015395BC?id=130844

Because of all the the rumores going on about faked and illegal LotR-Symphony/-Concerts: the one in Munich is going to be an originall one. They will use the scoresheets be Howard Shore. But, please abologize Munich , the accusitics in the Munich Concert Hall are not quite uf the standards of the KKL! *evilgrinning*

Is there still interest in sheet music? Because I'm planning to do some more transcriptions, and since there are dozens of cues and tracks, your preferences are affecting my choices (most likely ).

    gkgyver,
When you say transcribe do you mean for piano, or are you trying to get the entire orchestra and choir in there?
If you've done some before, where have you posted them, or should I PM you if I get to take a look (which I'd love to!)

My main goal is to capture the piece with as much orchestral intricacies as possible, I don't really focus on whether it's playable on a piano or not.
I listen to the piece once to see whether two staves will do, and if I think I have to use three, I'll use three.

If there's choir, it's on two separate staves, like in The Crack Of Doom for instance.

At least that's what I'm doing from now on. From FOTR I have transcribed "The Shire", "Very Old Friends", "Keep It Secret, Keep It Safe", "The Great River" and "The Breaking Of The Fellowship".
From ROTK I have "Bilbo's Song", "The Grey Havens", "Dwimorberg - The Haunted Mountain", "The Crack Of Doom" and "The Eagles", and, in due time, "The Lighting Of The Beacons".

Actually, I have far more self-made sheet music, mainly from ROTK, just not in "presentable" (aka print-worthy) form.
For instance, I've transcibed the choir from "For Frodo", I just never got around to add the counterpoint.

"Prologue: One Ring To Rule Them All", "The Fields Of The Pelennor", "Shieldmaiden Of Rohan", "The Passing Of Theoden", "Anduril", "The Last Debate", "The Pyre Of Denethor", "Journey To The Cross-Roads", "The Road To Isengard" ... they all exist in some form or another on my PC, they just need some minor additions and new make-up.

PS: I've also re-scored the Grey Havens sequence with Bilbo's Song, to see if it could work orchestrally. If you want to hear it, be my guest.
