A BIG thank you to Doug for this.

And to Howard Shore as well, for the music.

(Now if I can just figure out how to get the DVD out without breaking it....)

    What a cryptical message ... ^^

What intrgues me in the ROTK podcast is that Doug said, or implied, that there were a few minor thematic threads left hanging at the end of the trilogy.
    What are those?

Is online UPS tracking always accurate?

According to the website, my CR arrived in Indianapolis (a few hours away from me) at midnight and has been sitting there for 15 hours. Does that make any sense?

I think I'm going to remove the DVD, burn a copy of each side, and return it forever to the little nub. Handling that thing without scratching or smudging the exposed side (or ripping the nub off the backing like I did with my FOTR set after trying to twist out the disc) is going to be tricky.

Anyway-it's funny, after listening to the original soundtrack release so much, to now finally hear the tracks play out "the right way." Everything just sounds the way it's supposed to sound.

Doug--Thanks for all of your hard work on this project. The excellence and depth of your contribution has elevated the quality and bumped everything up a notch from very good to outstanding. If we do get The Hobbit one of these days, I hope you can be involved in the complete score project for that as well.

Guess what I've been listening to for the last four hours!
    My new green boxed friend!

So it's great, obviously, but I have a curious question that I'm not sure has been asked about before...but maybe it has.

What ever happened to the extended choir backed Rivendell theme in "Anduril" on the OST? I never realized it wasn't in the movie until a few minutes ago, because after listening to "Anduril - The Flame of the West" on the CR I was slightly shocked that the Rivendell theme was cut short and went directly to the Minis Tirith theme, so I checked the movie and sure enough, the movie and CR match, which is fine by me. But I was shocked, (not disappointed mind you), but mostly I'm just curious if it was supposed to be in the film, but maybe that scene was cut a bit, so part of the cue had to go. Or is the OST version just a different take that Shore wanted on the OST album exclusively? Its too bad it had no place in the movie as it's a beautiful, fully fleshed rendition of the Rivendell theme.

In any event, the world seems a little better now that the ROTK CR is finally out, and blasting my eardrums. I take that back...THE WORLD IS A LOT BETTER NOW!!! Thanks Doug for the great liner notes as usual and everybody who worked to make these CR's available, especially the one and only Shore, in whom I trust and love for his musical genius.

P.S. Also a very special thanks to Mr. Kelly with whom I had the pleasure of purchasing this fine set from, (and receiving it a day before the release was certainly a thrill! ) Thanks to everybody here as well for keeping this forum alive and strong for what seems like many years already!

Speaking of the DVD, are there any audiophiles around here who can recommend a good 5.1 surround sound system under $600? I did get to experience the DVD in the Two Towers set ONCE, and it was amazing.

Here is an idea for protecting the DVD-the really skinny jewel cases are the perfect size to slip into the box and still leave room for the CD case, the booklet and even the little slip of cardboard with the track list on it. You can also use a regular jewel case, but the box will not shut properly.

So am I. There is more than one way to relate to music and you and I have plenty of those 'other' ways. In fact, there is a fairly active movie forum board at TheOneRing.net. They have regular discussions drawn from screencaps and 'geeky observations'. I've been piggy-backing music information onto these discussions and we wander into some really interesting areas that rarely require a music degree to understand. Come check us out.

Hm, a 5.1 system for $600? You can do that, but it will involve some serious compromises. It is fabulously easy to spend twice that on the subwoofer alone. However, if you just want to get started, you can find a decent HTiB (Home Theater in a Box) for less than that. If you want the DVD player included, you can get those too, but it means even more compromise. Whichever way you go, make sure you can upgrade it later, meaning no proprietary connectors or equipment that can only play with each other.

The idea is to get a system you can build on and replace the original components with better ones as time and budget permit. When it comes time to upgrade, start with speakers since they will have the most impact on the quality of the sound. Electronics are a distant second. And stay away from Bose. You're paying for the name, not sound quality. That's probably out of your budget anyway.

    Good luck!

Just keep in mind that in order to play the Advanced Resolution tracks, you'll need a DVD-Audio player. Otherwise you're just stuck with the Dolby Digital tracks, which are hardly audiophile.

And let me just chime in with agreement about the overpriced and overrated Bose speakers. Not a big fan.

I figured that with a $600 budget for the whole system he wouldn't be interested in spending a third of it on a DVD-Audio capable universal player. Though he would likely not ever need another standard DVD player again if he did. Try an Oppo DV-980H for $169 if you want the Advanced Resolution tracks. If not, then just about any old $39 DVD player will give you the not-audiophile-but-more-enveloping-than-stereo-CD Dolby Digital tracks. If the receiver can accept an optical or coaxial input. Best to check to make sure.

Ah... I'm not really confined to a $600 budget, but I wanted to make sure no one started recommending multiple thousand dollar systems.

I have heard from most audiophiles that Bose is very overrated and more a product of marketing than solid sound quality, so I did plan on buying something else.

Thanks for the recommendations; I do plan on buying a DVD-A player, even if it means spending 2 or 3 hundred on it.

If I do the amount of stuff providing from the book 3 and 4 of the LOTR who is the Two Towers books in fact I find 51:27
(I may add in it the FOTR track : The departure of boromir 5:29 that made 56M56S) thus with the 3H8M32S of TTT-CR the result is 4H5M28S !

and only ~3H00 remains for The Rotk-CR !!

No Surprise The TTT-CR doesn't want to keep closed....

I have also noticed that the Shelob's events are under-exposed because they are aligned/melted with the events of the battle of the Pelennor fields and thus sometime I am forgeting them more because they have another atmosphere and so they are maybe not compatible between them.

I think I will make some selections of tracks in witch I will put and try to reconstruct the events of the books in their real development.

TTT book(s) stuff and scene providing from the adaptation* :

    Journey to the Crossroads 02:17
    The Road to Isengard 02:18
    The Foot of Orthanc 04:15
    Return to Edoras 01:51
    The Chalice Passed 01:51
    The Green Dragon 00:35
    Gollum's Villainy 02:10
    Éowyn's Dream 01:24
    The Palantir 03:10
    Flight from Edoras 02:18
A Coronal of Silver and Gold 08:27
The Stairs of Cirith Ungol 02:41
The Parting of Sam and Frodo* 04:04
    Shelob's Lair 08:53
    Shelob the Great 05:13

    = 51:27

(something more working out is possible too : what I can do with "Roots and Beginnings" ????
If it is not to puts it in the development of the travel of Sam, and Gollum ! I can also made several selections in witch a track is able to figure many times : "Osgiliath invaded" just after "A coronal of silver and gold" and in the selection of the events of Minas Tirith...ect

    Someones have noticed we have
THE LORD OF THE RINGS- THE COMPLETE
    RECORDINGS
    !!

    now....

Really Thank You Howard Shore !

    and all others.

That made a result very sensual if I remember correctly the alignement I've made. (playing two players in the same time). the inflections of the music in the debut are aligned with Aragorn passing his hand(s) ??? above the chest of Eowyn !!!

I was sure that I had done that but having checked it's apparent that I didn't. There must have been a really good reason for my not doing that but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. It's been a long week. I've revised it and a new link can be found here

I think you're able to think with the council : so "minasmorgul" is wrong !!! but I've done the mine

the choir end when all the three characters back up !! there is a unused music (a know music but longer than in the Movie) just after the last piece of completly unused music of this sequence!

there is also a little piece of unused music at the end (just before "dangerous pass" : scene edited out) who is following a longer music than in the movie (the same principle than before) for the witch king flying above the Morgul vale.

(there is also a unused music for Pippin remembering Weather Top (and maybe some 10's seconde even before ...) and for the Witch king in Minas Morgul aligned without a silence ... with the Minas Morgul scene proper..)

There is definitely more music than film for this sequence! I haven't forgotten about the Gandalf/Pippin balcony conversation and will tackle that separately.

The unused music at the end of this ('Minas Morgul') piece is for a deleted scene which does not appear in any version of the film so there is very little that I can do with it.

The unused music at the end of this ('Minas Morgul') piece is for a deleted scene which does not appear in any version of the film so there is very little that I can do with it.

there are about 44 secondes of silence to place in the balcony scene but if you align " A coronal of silver and Gold" with the beginnings of the scenes/chapter Minas Morgul all go very good* only edidet out the "dangerous pass" music or shortened it for it may be good with the warning of sam music, it's what I've made : because we see Gandalf with the dangerous pass theme (this, remember the misty mountains scenes where Gandalf was in danger too... => Witch king vs gandald/ balrog vs Gandalf (in the book Gandalf doesn't seem to be as weak as he is in the movie but there is even though something of that, in it : "the WK going on to goes ahead at the Minas Tirith gate")

    * in fact I align Frodo suffering (having a jolt) with the drum beginnings at 6:43 just after the first serie of two ..[6:43 pom! pom! "jolt"... pom! pom!]

I don't think the alternate Destruction Of The Ring choir piece on the OST was really intended for the scene with Frodo and Sam, but rather for the fall of the tower. I'll make a video and show you what I mean.

The more interesting part for me of the unused HoH music is the first part with Eowyn's Shieldmaiden theme.
Just start it after Gandalf and Aragorn exchange looks, and the camera pans over the battlefield. Gorgeous!

I love how you've re-edited the Osgiliath Invaded video to include Gandalf/Pippin arriving at Gondor.

I noticed a long time ago that one of the making of documentaries on the ROTK EE set has a shot from behind as Gandalf looks at Minas Tirith. The camera then turns with him as he sees Faramir and his men retreating from Osgiliath. If I can find it and edit something together, I'll put it up on youtube with the music . That is unless of course Jim, you beat me to it!
