the Argonath music is not the only hidden gem here!

If my ears don't cheat me, there's some alternate Shire music in the last third, which sounds a bit synth-ish.
But the Argonath music is indeed gorgeous! Personally, I find the Gondor In Decline theme more fitting than the History Of The Ring theme. Logically, I mean.
Emotionally, they both play out differently, and they both work brilliantly.

    About the "abusive relationship" discussion;
when, like in Lord of the Rings, the director is looking for someone who is willing to invest himself to that degree, and Howard Shore *was* willng (which, let's face it, the score shows), that's not abusive.
I mean, it would be a different story if he was the kind of composer that doesn't care too much about background information and such details, but we all know Howard Shore loves details.
In my opinion, it's alot more abusive when a composer is brought in a month before release and is required to shake a top notch 90 minutes orchestral score out of his pencil.
In a way, it's an abuse of film music itself.

In a way, Lord of the Rings shows the way it *should* be done, with the composer rewriting and re-recording the music until it fits the picture, and the director conforming to the composer's process as much as possible. Like in Two Towers, when PJ cut Helm's Deep earlier because Howard Shore felt it would give him a better idea of what the film was going to be like.
That doesn't mean all composers on every film should be involved for a year, but the movie industry severely lacks respect for good craftsmanship in film scoring recently.

Oh, Doug, thanks for squeezing my question in, by the way!
I don't think I know myself what I mean by "different sound", that's why I asked
But I think you are right, it comes from all the themes colliding and interacting.
Return of the King is like Fellowship plus Two Towers and then some.

It's a huge jiggsaw puzzle, and I'm loving every second of it

Does anyone know how extensive the removal of 'interesting counterlines' referred to in the podcast was? Are we talking a high proportion of cues here, or a few isolated incidents? (You'd think if it was one of the main cues, the orchestrations for the LOTR would restore the details Shore originally conceived.)

I think that was a general remark about director-composer relationships, not meant to be specific.

It's not the first time I've heard the Kaplans make a remark like that about LOTR, and writing music for Peter Jackson. In my distant memory is a podcast where someone even hinted that some issues of orchestration may have played a role in what happened in KING KONG.

Admittedly, perhaps this is not the place to talk about it. Was just curious if it'd ever popped up in the several thousand posts in this thread and its previous incarnations.

There has been a post by Magpie identifying this piece, but beats me if I can find it right now. IIRC, it's from "The Footsteps of Doom":

    Man sí minna?

The lyrics are from 'The Seduction of the Ring'.
    Here are Magpies time stamps.

Great podcast! Favourite quote: 'They [the LotR-scores] stand the test of *my* time.' Couldn't have said this better myself

I'm not trying to nitpick here, but the choir lyrics have a few flaws; the "First heard in" infos to be precise.

For instance, "The Destruction Of The Ring", marked as "first heard: disc four, track two". It is, in fact, first heard in track one.
And "The Mountain Of Fire" is heard in track two.
And I don't think "Don't Let Go" appears at all, but I'm not trained to decipher phonetic languages over a thousand orchestra members

a few words are heard from 3:36 - 4:09 on the OST, End of All Things. This wasn't in the movie and I'm not hearing it (the beginning at least) on the CR track, Crack of Doom.

And I am not going to worry that my order from moviemusic has not shipped yet.

    this is me not worrying.

Boy, this Crack of Doom track is kick-ass. (podcast audio... in case you were wondering --- no... I mean Cinematic Sound on Demand. I'm going to bed. This is twice I've had to edit and the dang html gets so botched up.)

Just checked the choral text in the score, and the beginning of "The Crack Of Doom" (with Frodo hanging on for dear life) does feature "The Destruction Of The Ring", but just random syllables, so no wonder I can't place it

Seems like "The Destruction Of The Ring" was used all the way through the Mount Doom sequence, save for a few lines of "The Mountain Of Fire".

And I haven't received a shipping notification yet either. I really hope last year's egg hunt won't happen this year.

And i'll order my ROTK:CR this week or the next.Should arrive in this part of the world by the beggining of december .Cheers and namarie!

P.S.:Magpie,don't you think that after DA's book is realeased you'll be "out of job"?I mean,it'll probably contain every theme reference from the movies/recordings,every lyric and cue... .

It was very interesting hearing all those different accents on the podcast. Although ironically I found it easier to understand those from Germany and India than some of the Americans! Thankfully you were all saved from hearing my accent, though. :-P

Which reminds me, Doug, did you manage to come up with an answer for my question? I think it was along the lines of "Do you have a favourite theme in Lord of the Rings?"

I'd be interested to hear everyone else's answers too. Personally my favourites change a lot, but right now it's the Five Beat Pattern and everything that goes with it - all the dark, evil, Mordor and Isengard music.

    Tough choice...
I think my favourite themes are the Ring-themes (seduction, evil, history,...), Evil Times, Descending Third, Gollum's Menace and Nature.

But I also can't get enough of the Shire, Mordor, Isengard, Rohan and Gondor themes...

EDIT: Doh! I forgot the Fellowhip-Theme. It's brilliant - especially the choral version in 'For Frodo'!

Perhaps. We'll see. From what I can gather, Doug will not offer the lyrics 'as sung'... only the full text that we've seen in the Annotated Scores. He does not offer the same sort of cue by cue for the OSTs that I do. He does not reconstruct the movies from the OSTs like I do. He doesn't have a comprehensive list of the unused music with audio and video samples (courtesy of TennisBallKid and JimJWare). He doesn't have a comprehensive compilation of Howard's comments on the score.

And, he doesn't always think what I do or say what I do.

In fact, I got to say... if you think that my site is just a duplication of what Doug says, you haven't spent enough time there.

I think the musicologist fan (a category that covers many of you) prefer Doug's work. That's understandable. But not every fan can afford the CRs and not every fan understands Doug. I had 15,000 views in the last three days. I've gotten letters from nuns and heavy metal musicians. I don't think I'm going to be put out of business.

I also don't think Doug is into 'listing' as much as some fans are. He's into 'discussing'. So I don't know if it *will* "contain every theme reference from the movies/recordings,every lyric and cue... ". Lists are only good as fodder for examination and discussion.

You will get an email one business day after the item is shipped. Woops, theoretically this means that for orders shipping today the notice will go out Monday. BUT I'll make sure to go to work on a non-business day like Saturday to make sure everyone receives their notices on Saturday.

Really, though, notices are good for the tracking number only, as I can tell you now that everyone who has pre-ordered by right now will be shipped by today!

A lot of you ordered with Priority Mail, which means your box will probably be in your hands on Monday... if the post office has recovered nicely from its day off earlier this week.

I've undercharged on postage, I've undercharged on retail price to compete with amazon. I'm in a sweatshop on this one, but it's for you guys! Hopefully you can see there are some cool places other than the almighty amazon.com to do business, and regardless of price, you get good old-fashioned attention.

And now you can go out and tell your friends someone called you "old-fashioned" today.

They're wrong. If a Internet Market-seller was not able to send a purchase for it will be in the Box-Mail the day of the release, the competition with the direct shopping shouldn't be fair.

At any rate it's what happen in France, often the DVD I've purchased on Internet are in my hands the day of their release (I hope it will happen with the director's cut of blade Runner)

For the DVD of TTT, it wasn't at home as its release-date, so I cancelled it with the internet-seller and I've gone buy it at the newagent/book trade shop.

Any Hope, I think, the ROTK-CR will be in this shop tuesday 20 th November
there are still about up to three weeks for I will get the Precious. (As amazon.uk has stand its release I hope for a Shorter time than the last year, it will be good to take one of their copy from these so (too) near englishes... )

Just a quick question for Doug that hopefully he can answer; I was just wondering if the Rarities disc will include (at this stage) any pieces set to scenes not even present in the Extended Editions?

I suppose they would have to be scenes cut out very late in proceedings, but perhaps Mr. Shore might possibly have conjured up something at an early stage, even if not complete. Deleted scenes in question I know of would include the Moria Orcs following the Fellowship into Lothlorien, the Elven Council in The Two Towers or Eowyn battling the Uruks in the Glittering Caves. Or did these not get past the drawing board (if they even ever made the drawing board)? But of course these are just major scenes that I know of, there could be others less well-known.

Personally, though very unlikely, I'd love to hear what Shore would have done for a potential Epilogue scene - I really think the music used during Sam's speech in TTT and also Frodo standing on the shores of the Anduin in FOTR would have been perfect here, but obviously fleshed out in some way. Just my lowly opinion.

I suppose they would have to be scenes cut out very late in proceedings, but perhaps Mr. Shore might possibly have conjured up something at an early stage, even if not complete. This is a great question. I also would like to hear the the music for Gimli and Legolas' final scene(s) in the glittering caves and Fangorn (if music was ever recorded).

I got my e-mail from Peter; CR should be here Monday or Tuesday... which is perfect, really, for my Thanksgiving break

Four years ago, day before Thanksgiving, I scuttled to the store and got my ROTK OST. Ah, the good old days...
