FILM: O.K. ... Where to begin (this will be somewhat jumbled): I'm no fan of Michael Bay, in the "serious" sense, but I do find his films ridiculously funny at times and at other times, just downright stupid. Clayton smartly pointed out earlier that some people think Michael Bay is a terrible sign of what's to come, "the end of cinema" or whatever, and though I have serious problems with stuff like Pearl Harbour and Bad Boys II, I'm not one of those people ... Bay should keep on truckin'. Transformers is different, and will probably be an anomaly in Bay's career (like Shooter was/is for the often terrible Antoine Fuqua). Shia Lebuff (spelling error, I know) is surprisingly humourous and plays his role very well, and same goes for that hottie he's running around with for the whole movie (there's a hilarious scene, involving a few 80's songs, between the two of them and Bumble Bee when he first goes to try his moves on her at a party and his drive home with her, which is very nicely done). The helicopter Decepticon gets a awesome introduction (largely shown in the trailer) attacking the desert base, and the scorpion Decepticon that follows is really neat, too. For those who love the Transformer cartoons and toys (that doesn't include me), I'm sure the scenes where Optimus Prime and his co-horts are talking and interacting with one another gave them a wet dream/raging boner. HA! The Decepticons aren't as fleshed out as they could have been, but it doesn't really matter all that much—they're still a cool and menacing foe in the movie. Does the GHETTO BLASTER Decepticon remind anyone else of Short Circuit!? Bay comes close to ruining some of the action sequences with his continued use of cameramen who suffer from epilepsy or whatever else makes people shake uncontrollably and foam at the mouth while holding a steadicam. The special effects from ILM are, of course, incredible and reach even grander heights this time around in pushing visual effects to the fullest extent: nuts_score warned me that all the "money shots" from ILM were in the trailer, and Oh! how wrong he is!!! and that there would be nothing impressive in the film: wrong again! If anything some of the fights could have been longer, like the freeway battle between Optimus Prime and Bone Crusher, and also the jet fighter sequence over L.A. with the flying Decepticon (forgot it's name) turning the USAF into Swiss cheese. The L.A. battle sequence is really impressive, one slow-motion shot will stand out for the audience (you'll know it when it comes). Overall, nothing much really to complain about other than Jon Voight (and Bernie Mac—why is he allowed on movie sets!? HAHA!), who is just ridiculous (him shooting a shotgun! LMAO!). I thought it was a fun ride and I can't wait to see it again: I went in with an open mind and was surprisingly pleased by this movie. (Side note: There's some funny Star Trek references in the film from Bumble Bee, and for anyone who doesn't know, the Transformers screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are penning Star Trek XI!)SCORE: Right off the bat, any haters (you know who you are) of Hans Zimmer/Media Ventures/Remote Control will immediately whine, b-i-t-c-h, and moan about this score, so you know where to stick it (saying Zimmer's style is the "end of scoring" as we know it is absolutely ridiculous and is just as lame and tired as thinking Bay is the "end of cinema"). Steve Jablonsky returns for his third(?) big outing and he seems to be getting better every time. There are some obvious references to the Zimmer/Howard music from Batman Begins (the oscillating string writing from the "Journey On The Ice" sequence in particular) and since Michael Brook is playing guitar again, there's some similarities to his performances from M:I—2 and The Island for some of the love-oriented scenes. What's fantastic is the Autobots brass theme, played prominently during the film's prologue and when Optimus Prime and the Autobots assemble for the first time in the alley. The best piece in the film, IMO, is for the scorpion Decepticon sequence in the desert when the A-10s are called in! KICK ASS! I'm sure many will find it "typical," but I don't think it is. Very heroic and fast-paced; this theme appears grandest in that "Kill The Scorpion!" sequence and prominently again during the Autobots drive towards L.A. Bravo to Steve Jablonsky, I really enjoyed his music for the film and can't wait to hold the CD in my hands!!! HZ/MV/RC haters will hate this score and should avoid it all costs and stop giving these guys that crybaby "one last chance" like that douche did for Pirates 3. Ummm... Roll out!

Halfway through Sean's paragraph, I became possessed by the possibility of...A David Cronenberg TRANSFORMERS film with robot love scenes and Wagner adaptations by Elliot Goldenthal
That'd kick 'em in the Midwest!

I wouldnt be surprised to see clips from this movie in a new Linkin Park or Nickelback music video soon. I think its cool when music videos do that.

That's gotta suck when it comes to sitting down... Anyway Sean, I didn't mean you said that Michael Bay is end of cinema, I just meant in general there's tons of people that say that. If you go check out IMDB, you'll see the angry posters there that act personally offended by Michael Bay's movies. And Focus Features is a company that I think is owned by Universal. But they have this stupid preview in front of their movies saying something along the lines of "all movies that aren't our movies are the exact same crap". That might actually be a direct quote... But they say their movies are basically better than any other movie out there. I think Brokeback Mountain was one of their movies...

Clayton, no worries, I wasn't under the impression that you were directing that comment at me, just stating that that is a popular opinion: In fact, I hear a lot of people say that, too, and it kind of astonishes me; I think some of them want everyone to be pumping out French "New Wave" flicks or something along those lines (this Focus Feature thing seems to ring of that, too, I'll have to check that business out ... Brokeback Mountain was one of theirs!? Geez Louise!), leaving no chance for fun. Hell, all I'm looking forward to until the of this year is: I Am Legend, WAR, and Alien Vs. Predator 2 ... so, HAHA! And any low-budget Vietnam War movies I can find on VHS at the corner-store.HZ/MV/RC haters really hate it, I guess, when you call them out. bud's fascination with my 6 is quite disturbing, however.

Saw the movie last night and I'm ready for more! Anyone of the appropriate age in the 80s should feel nostalgic (good move using Peter Cullen.)Bay's best movie, that I think draws on his best qualities and minimizes the weaknesses (though they are still there to a degree under the hood.)
Spielberg's influence (from the time when I actually enjoyed his movies)really helps this one. Everything seems to come together well...action, pacing, dialogue, acting and humor (most of the audience was engaged...laughing, gasping, etc).
I left the theatre exhilirated and wanting more, which I guess is all I expect from a whiz-bang summer movie. The best movie of its type in years.
The score was effective as well, and there were several pieces that made an impression. I am going to see the movie again to get a better listen. Hope they release a score album soon.

Saw the movie last night and let me say... WOW... I gotta be honest, when I was little I don't think I watched Transformers and I hardly had any of their toys (I was more into Ghostbusters and TMNT) and I wasn't really sure if this movie was for me. Don't get me wrong, I figured it was Michael Bay and I'd be entertained no matter what. But this movie, was simply awesome. One of the things I loved about it was how it didn't take itself to seriously at all. Everything was just over the top fun with pretty much constant humor. As for the score, yes, it did sound like Batman Begins in some parts. But it fit perfectly. I CANNOT wait for a score release as some of the music was very memorable (especially in that Armageddon Meteor Shower scene... hope that doesn't count as a spoiler since it's at the beginning of the trailer).

We saw this movie last night and were blown away. My wife loved it and I agree. It's so fun and entertaining on all front. The robots are great and the transformations were incredible and impressive all the time. I was so in awe whenever they were morphing. The cars themselves were showcased in the typical Bay style, which is really dynamic and cool. I'm sure more than a couple of people in the theater wanted to get a Camaro or the Solstice. The action were intense and involving without feeling cheesy and forced. Shia was great. He made his role believable and delivered the jokes naturally. Megan Fox did her job better than I thought she'd do. I'd see her again. The parental units were so funny and made everyone laugh whenever they're on screen.
Steve Jablonsky's score is good. Very thematic and melodic. The theme for the Decepticon is sinister and almost snake-like. The Autobot's theme is noble. The cue for the Autobot's descent to earth and their subsequent transformation is one of the best cue in the movie. The movie was obviously temped with Batman Begins and Armageddon but the influence was negligible given how how well it's executed. I hope that the score CD release will showcase at least an hour of the score because there were so many good moments .
Great movie, good score.

One thing about the score and the supposed influence of the score from Armageddon: Steve Jablonsky did contribute significantly to that score, so you can take it either that the film was temped with that score, or it's just Jablonsky being Jablonsky and it resembles his work from Armageddon. Just a thought.Saw the film again last night and I loved it even more the second time around: Great musical moments are 1) "Kill The Scorpion!" 2) "The Autobots Descend" (the landing and alleyway sequence) and 3) "Autobots vs. Decepticons / Battle For Los Angeles."

Steve Jablonsky did have a good hand in Armageddon, but he was working with HGW's themes and style more than his own. Though I think the work he did on this movie certainly break the notion that he can't do more than write a themeless score. You could even hear some some electronic stuff from The Island, which was even one of his better score.

What I noticed from The Island is the guitar stuff, for sure, which also sounds a lot like M:I—2, because The Island sounds like that score to begin with. Michael Brook, I guess, isn't that versatile on the guitar; that isn't to say I don't like what he does, I love it. There's also the shot where Jon Voight's helicopter is flying towards the Pentagon: sounds like the taiko-drum action music from The Island. As for Armageddon, Jablonsky did write the entire opening piece for one—I have a promo CD of his somewhere around here with ALL the cues he wrote for that film, but that's the one that sticks out the most.[Message edited by sean on 07-05-2007]

How many minute did he write for Armageddon? I have the "complete" score but it doesn't list out who did what. You must send me a copy of the promo so I could verify
. Michael Brooks did a movie that was directed by Kevin Spacey called Albino Alligator. The sound didn't sound like him at all. You should check it out.

He wrote the the music for when Paris gets destroyed (which was also used in the opening) and there's another meteor shower track that he wrote that only the beginning of made into the movie. And then also the music for when they dock with the Russian space station and a couple others.Clayton
