I was just wondering, out of the Indiana Jones movies, which one has the best score, they are all good, but which one is the best in your opinion?????

"Temple of Doom," NO CONTEST! Well, okay, some contest, but in my mind the answer is clear. Despite it's miserable soundtrack representation, it is one of Williams' most intense, complex and mature scores -- possibly the best action/adventure score ever written. "Raiders" is very, very good. "Last Crusade" is fun (its plethora of themes and infectious mickey-mousing make it a fan-favorite) but "Temple" is the all-around winner. With so many MAGNIFICENT unavailable cues, I think the inevitable expanded score release will bear this out.

    TEMPLE OF DOOM.

With all of the expanded editions released (and on the horizon), it is almost criminal that this one is still only available in its current, truncated state (and an import, at that!).

God, they are all so good.....RAIDERS is easily my favorite movie of all time, and the score is wonderful. Yet TOD holds to the John Williams Sequel Syndrome - surpassing even the original (see also JAWS 2, THE LOST WORLD, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, etc.).

NP: RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK 5/5*
    Honestly!

    Jeez, Wedge.....

We must have been typing at the same time! I honestly did not know you were saying exactly the same thing at exactly the same time; would've saved myself the trouble.

They say great minds think alike. Apparently, WE do too.......

    Hey brothers,

I think TEMPLE OF DOOM is the LEAST effective of the three, although that might be a factor of growing up with the album, which I think IS NOT a very good representation of ANY kind of score. Never did hear the expanded version.

Have you watched the film recently? With the new widescreen release, I took the time to give things a good listen. While the score is hardly an "effective" ablum by soundtrack standards, I could go on for PAGES how effective it is in the film. Perhaps someday I will.

Whoa! I guess I misspoke a bit. I actually think TEMPLE OF DOOM is a GREAT movie -- I certainly liked it more than RAIDERS (which always has left me cold -- sorry, people) -- but my favorite of the bunch, filmwise, and perhaps musicwise, is certainly THE LAST CRUSADE.

Perhaps you will indeed go on for pages, Sir Wedge -- I myself have gone on for pages about less respected pictures.

Mea culpa, Wedge, but I still have not read your HOOK piece because I still have not made time for it. Please don't take it all personal ('ey look, my very best Brooklyn Construction Site! someone take a picture -- aaah, this's the Net, it's all virtual anyways)

I think Temple of Doom is the best movie and score. I hope we will indeed see a complete score to this, and the other two movies for that matter.

Don't worry, Mr. Rocco, the article will wait. But while we're on the subject, it will wait at http://johnwilliams.cjb.net//hook.htm since Befan had to change the URL. Thanks!

BTW, I found it humorous how "Temple of Doom" is my personal fave of the trilogy, how it got the best critical reviews, yet STILL seems to have a bad rep with the general public. At least, that's been my experience. It's taken a loooong time for some of my more prejudiced friends to warm up to it. It's probably all backlash from that whole PG-13 fiasco. (shrugs)

For me, Last Crusade is best moviewise and scorewise. However, it is hard to choose for all three are excellent, among the best ever, easily.

I might as well throw my two cents in......

Although there are wonderful things in all these movies, I think the first one is the real special one of the three---plus it's the one that originated the whole concept. Later films might be able to do better but they also get to ride on previous creativity

I would say as much for the score to Raiders--the Raiders March and Desert Chase are amazing cues--and the whole concept of this heroic/slightly parodistic score is inventive. But somehow as a listening experience, I actually prefer Temple of Doom--I like the new themes more.

    RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.

The best action adventure score ever written (and yes, I've heard WIND AND THE LION). Ranging from lively scherzos to heroic marches to a beautifully clichéed love theme to intense action complexity ("Desert Chase") to ethnic coloring, and last but not least - Williams ubiquitous "religious tone" ("Map Room: Dawn"). "Only the Penitant Will Pass" from LAST CRUSADE is superb in that religious vein too, but overall RAIDERS takes home the prize. For a brief article on Williams' "religious" music:

Altough he will wish to kill himself, I second what my good friend Thor wrote above...

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK is one of the best scores of all times. Not saying the sequels aren't good, but the doesn't come even near the first one...

Personally, I prefer Last Crusade - I think Raiders is a little too reliant on Indy's Fanfare. I'm not sure about ToD, since I haven't seen the film for a while, but I have just bought the widescreen box set, so it's just a matter of time...

I guess I favor LAST CRUSADE for two reasons: the noble "Grail" music, and one of my all-time favorite action cues, "Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra."

Digipacks are very flimsy compared to actual jeweled cases. Jeweled cases can be easily replaced, digipacks can't if they get damaged. Plus digipacks just look f'ing ugly.
