I have on a couple of occasions gone with my husband to the following...

    1)Star Trek Convention
    2)Science Fiction/Horror Movie Conventions
    3)Comic Book Conventions
4)Music (CD & LP Collectors) Convention
    5)Toy & Doll Conventions
    6)Game Conventions

Anyway, these conventions always have exhibitions, seminars, famous celebrities & personalities, merchants selling collectibles, people wearing all kinds of wonderful costumes, and contests where you can win prizes! The best part is that you get to meet and socialize with other people who share your passion for the hobby the convention celebrates!

My query is...do such conventions exist for our hobby? If so, when and where? I would love to meet and "hang out" with my many firends that I've developed relationships with over the past couple of years and at the same time, meet some famous composers, etc.

If such a thing doesn't exist yet, who should we talk to to get it started?

    the filmscore gal,
    Galina

Not right now, I have no money! Of course, we COULD do it in Vienna... (It's not like we didn't have an influence on (film) music you know )

I think Dan and I are on the same page here. They have great stuff for breakfast in Austria and Belgium. Pancakes, waffles, crepes... And then there's schnappes. But you can't drink that for breakfast... or can you?

I don't think it's written that you can't have alcohol in the morning....

An interesting notion, but I think a sober look at the situation:

    1)Star Trek Convention
    Millions of fans

    2)Science Fiction/Horror Movie Conventions
    Millions of fans

    3)Comic Book Conventions
    Millions of fans

4)Music (CD & LP Collectors) Convention
    Millions of customers

    5)Toy & Doll Conventions
    See the trend?

    6)Game Conventions
    Millions of fans

Better comparitors would be other genres of music. Preferably with similar numbers of fans.

Some conventions likely to be better attended than a soundtrack convention:

    1. EstpolkCon. Estonian polkas of the late 80s. 1880s.
    2. K.con. That one not-so-good measure in that one Mozart concerto, you know the one that I mean.
    3. SMCon. Sock Monkeys and Those Who Love Them*
    4. NonCoMuPiTruNoGoHuDoGoKillCon. Country Music NOT About Pickup Trucks or That No Good Husband Who Done Got Killed
    5. OCanadaCon. National Anthems
    6. The Yanni/Zamfir Axis

*OK, not music, but about the same number of fans.

A friend of mine who has been into soundtracks for far longer than myself fondly recalls living in Los Angeles in the 1970's and getting together with other soundtrack fans for impromptu record swaps. They'd get together in vacant lots, trade records, talk film music. I've always wanted to be a part of something like that but I don't think it would fly these days. There are just too many people in this hobby with shady reputations, just out to make a buck for themselves and I think that would cause a problem for people. Apart from that concern, I would still love to get together with a bunch of people and talk film music. I've met several people from this very board over the years and we've gotten together for lunch and had a great time. Now, where's the schnappes...

Of course you CAN drink Schnaps for breakfast, but I don't know if it's a good idea. Pancakes, waffles, crepes? I didn't know they're exclusive to a few countries. As for me, I usually only eat two slices of bread or toast, or some piece of cake for breakfast.

Back to the topic now though.

This isn't exactly what I wanted but maybe it's a step in the right direction...this came from the fine people at Filmtracks....

Well, there have been some fairly significant developments since I posted this. Here is Brendan's official announcement:

Okay folks, I've talked it over with many of you over e-mail, ICQ, and on the Gathering discussion board and Ohio seems to indeed be the way to go. The concert we will all gather at will be John Williams Conducting the Cleveland Orchestra in a "Salute to the Silver Screen" in which they will play all the old favorites we know and love. Here are specifics:

Date: Sunday, July 28th at 7:30 p.m. (with the option of attending the Williams violin concerto concert the night before if you so desire)

Location: Blossom Music Center, about 1 hour south of Cleveland, OH. It's an outdoor venue very similar to Tanglewood.

Tickets: go on sale on May 28...price range will be around $10 for seats on the lawn, and around $40 for tickets up close in the more formal seating areas.

Accomodations: the best option I found was a Sheraton Suites hotel located about 8 miles from the concert site. Here is the address:

    Sheraton Suites Akron/Cuyahoga Falls
    1989 Front Street
    Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, 44221
    (330) 929-3000

Room rates for people will be $40 per person per night if you have 4 people per room, $50-$60 per person per night if you have 2 people in a room, and of course around $120 per night if you get your own room. There may be cheaper hotels, but they will be a bit farther away so I think this is our best option.

    So, let's start planning!

    So, what does everyone think?

Well, I'm from Ohio and it'll take more than a John Williams concert to get me to go back. But you all have fun. Post pictures.

Well, that's my father's birthday, so I will be over at my parents' place.

Also, that's too far away for me to travel. Some of us are poor, ya know.

Now, if it was in Lansing..... perhaps.

    Hi,

Having read some of the old posts...here are some thoughts on a convention:

    (1) Size: I think that it would have to start off small. Reason? I think budgets would have to be realistic and perhaps overestimated because you can't be sure how many people will turn up. Estimates are safer when it comes to small amounts of money.

Additionally, reducing costs should be the main aim to make it accessible for more people. It would be great to start off with an inaugural bang but it should become special by virture of it being the first...not big...

Rome wasn't built in a day.....

    (2) Location: You need to pick one place and stick to it for that year. Sadly not everyone is going to make it but event organisation needs action at some point. It should be prepared to move around from year to year.

    (3) Income: You may need to work out a ticketing system. How much would the tickets to the convention be? How would they be paid for? Can they be paid for in advance? If not, who is going to handle some of the down payments for any costs involved?

    (4) Sponsorship: Which organisations/labels would be willing to help out?

    (5) Keynote speakers/guests: Again start off small.

    (6) Dedication: You need to have a base of people loyal to the cause so that there's some consistency from year to year. Someone who attends one year may build expectations for another year (in any way, shape, or form).

    Rochelle
p.s whatever occurs...any convention has my overwhelming support and I will do whatever I can from this end of the earth.

    Rochelle,

I'm sure at one time you posted something about knowing a guy who was in charge of organizing a film music convention, or festival or something...if I'm wrong, forgive me but if not could you refresh my memory as to what it was you were referring to? Thanks

    Hi Morpheus,

You have an excellent memory!! I posted that when I was a newbie...about a year ago.

The event you are referring to is Cinesonic. Its the only annual conference on soundtracks and sound in the world....and its right here in Melbourne, Australia. Actually, that's a lie since there's the officialised World Soundtrack Academy

The conference is spread over 3 days and includes noteworthy industry people and academics/writers.

Previous guests have included Carter Burwell (who performed 'Crash'), Howard Shore, Jack Nitzsche, Royal S. Brown, and Rick Altman.

Unfortunately, it seems that Cinesonic may now be defunct. How utterly depressing.

    Here's the link:

    Regards,
    Rochelle
