Topic: Moviemusic Party in a year? Can we do it?

Following the great trip I had in LA and San Diego, I am now addicted to meeting the people who we speak to everyday on this board. While talking to JJH, whom was also present in LA, we started poking at the idea of having everyone at Moviemusic.com meeting at one gigantic party. The idea is to have a little convention in an unnamed place(possibly Florida) in a year or so. The reason why I say year, is it gives all of us some time to plan a trip of this magnitude.
The convention could take place at a hotel and then you could also book rooms for a few days. Or if someone has a house large enough to hold a party of this size, then possibly throw it there.
Some ideas that JJH and I have gone over were:
- Possibly a concert.
a.) I could arrange a concert with an orchestra(possibly the Florida Orchestra) to do a film music concert.- Possibly have a composer come in and speak with us or even a few composers.(Myself and a few others on this board have contacts with some film composers and this could very well be planned.)
THE SET BACKS:
- Funds... where will we get funds from to host such a party.
a.) possibly sponsors or something along those lines.I know we could throw in a lot more ideas and I would love to here some of your ideas.
Do you even think this is possible?
All I know is it is an awesome feeling to be around people that have the same passion you do, film music.
Thanks,
Aaron Collins

Deal me in, and The Lovely Laura, too!A BITCHIN' idea, friend Aaron; and (IMO) very do-able. We will not only be there, but will support the event with some funding & provide labor for set-up & clean-up.
We'll be needing those ideas, Scott!
Also: It would be nice to set up a fund for the less-fortunate and/or our overseas friends.....$$ should not prevent a high turnout. Frankly, I think that there is enough loose change in our collective couches to get some assistance to our European friends. Thoughts, anyone?
I want this thing to happen!

I can bring enough liquor for everyone, oh and of course a Shirley Temple for our young Mr. Collins.Seriously, I'm so there, I'll pay for our good friend Dan Brecher to be there out of my own pocket.

So, Scott, what are your ideas?
We can make this happen and I think this is something worth planning. Mark, my pal, is definitely right about finding funds for people that cannot do it. I am all for this and want everyone on this board there!

Here's a thought- there is a website called the Film Music Institute. Maybe we could get them involved and make part of this a "new composer's showcase" of some sort.Title suggestion : MovieMusic.comCON
I know Jeron was working on making some T-Shirts with the website logo available to members of the board. It's worth a consideration. Intrada might a good sponsor to tap, except they'd want it to happen in California.
Location wise, Florida sounds good- but how come no one wants to do it in Texas in the spring when it's not too hot and the weather is usually fresh?

With a year to plan, scrimp, and save with, I should be able to at least partially underwrite the fares for Marian and Thor....Seriously, people. It is never too early to start planning - and I also like to strike while the iron is hot. Think of all the memories, strengthened relationships, and good music! It would also be a fine thing to get lots of photos & written accounts of the "MM.Con" on the site, as a warm calling card for the casual visitor......
I am NOT going to let this thing just drift away, here.

Ya know, and Peter will remember, this was an idea I had long before Moviemusic.com, back in the Movietunes.com days. I'm glad that there are enough people around in support of it, now. And who better to resurrect it than Aaron? I'd love to attend - and Florida is fine with me. I'll contribute ideas as I'm able to.Jeron

I like this idea. If you can have it in the
Tampa area I can make a business trip out of
it at least. Maybe FSM or Varese would under
write it to some degree. At the very least
we could rent one of those big meeting rooms
and rent a GOOD sound system to play a
selection of voted scores.
If your interested in the Northeast region
we have a nice hotel and small convention
center here in Marlboro (30 miles west of
Boston) that I could look into.

What kind of composers would like to attend? This sounds like Hometheaterforum meets.
It MIGHT be better to do it in LA? Depending on the composers. Let's get JG and JW

I'm in, certainly! As I keep saying, I've been thinking about trying to attend one of your next "concert conventions", but this is just plain fantastic, in particular because such a long-planned and "special" event will hopefully allow more people to come (I'm particularly thinking about us Europeans here, I never thought we'd ever be able to meet all together).
Mark, I'm incredibly flattered by your offer of financial aid, but I hope I can save enough on my own. This will certainly be worth it.
I'm counting the days! Even though I don't even know how many there are...

You're certainly very welcome, Marian; and that offer will still apply for both you and Thor up through the event itself. It will be GREAT to finally meet you, my friend. Having come this far (idea-wise) with the convention concept, I am now going to redouble my efforts. Calls to make, Aaron to talk to, etc.
I'm betting that we can make this happen next summer.

I am open to having the MM.com party anywhere. The reason why suggested FL, is maybe the use of The Florida Orchestra and I am very good friends with the manager of the Raddisson Resort. So possibly some discounts could be made available, especially in advance.Another idea could be that we find a date that the space shuttle goes off next summer. This is just another idea I have and if you have not seen the space shuttle in person, then you are missing an awesome event!
But, like I said above, I am open to having it anywhere.
Now renting out a banquet hall or convention center could run about 1000 dollars. That means if we have a 100 members from this board donate 10 dollars(which is a very small token), that part could be taken care of.
As far as composers are concerned, that will be up to scheduling. So, the sooner we find a date, the quicker we can get onto things. But, I think the summer would be an excellent time to throw this bash!

It's times like this (and just about every other moment in my life) that I wish I was older. However, by that time I will be 18!!!! I really would like to come, just many variables would have to come together to make it work! I wouldn't mind FL, especially since I have only BARELY been to Jacksonville, but TX would be much better for me (I know, that is very selfish). Anyways, I would love to be part of it!

Okay,I was thinking that each member of the board could perhaps donate $5.00 a month. Since we have 12 months to go plus the amount of members (PeterK?) that could be quite some money. Let's assume we have 50 members. That would be $3000.00, certainly enough to take care of the hall etc.
Secondly, we could get some people to sponser others. I don't mean pay the whole trip, but just talking to some who are furtherst away and offer some help in that regard. I can see this happening, for it is already happening.
It might be possible to have Varese, Intrada, Coca-Cola, or any other company sponser some of this in exchange for a limited time of advertising, similar to what Disney does in their amusement parks.
We have a lot of Trekkers and Trekkies on the board. They do a lot of conventions. Let's find out how those are organized and get further ideas from there.
Well, that's all I got right now. If anything else comes to mind I will post them.

These are all great ideas. If only I weren't getting married next summer . . . And NO, I wouldn't DARE suggest to my fiancee that MovieMusic.Com be our honeymoon destination!Actually, though (putting lawyer hat on--even though he's still at work supposedly practicing law), someone should look into the kinds of licenses that might be required to play recordings to a public audience such as a convention. I don't know a thing about it myself--not an IP lawyer--but that might be an additional cost to consider.
But assuming total expenses are kept reasonable, folks on the board should be perfectly able to put something together--and subsidize others.

I have talked to PeterK about this whole thing. He has been wanting to do something like this for a while and this looks like it could shape up.JClark,
The playing of the music will not be a problem at all. I see this as a party rather than a convention. If we had 1000 people than maybe we could call this a "CONVENTION." Who knows, we might have a 1000 people by then.
Scott, the 5.00 dollars a month could work out very well. We will work something out.
I have talked to the Manager at Radisson and I could rent out the convention center(which is gigantic) for a small fee. But, of course this is in FL.
Money could be dispensed in these ways:
- Possible Concert
- Stereo Equipment
- Catering
- Composers money to attendBut, we have a year to plan! Let's hear some more ideas!
Thanks,
Aaron

well...since aaron has connections with the orchestra...why dont we get them to play some of the music composed by some of our members here. i remember that lot of us compose......why no. i would love to hear some of aaron's work live. and i would love for you people to here some of mine. just another thought.
and we can let jeron be the person at the door to the "convention center" so he can say hi and be all friendly and extroverted and hand out name tags and itenteraries that he made up for each individual person.

Space Shuttles, wow!
And yes, I'd also love to hear some of Aaron's works. As for the idea of inviting composers, I think it's great, but we should be very careful to plan it. After all, there'll (hopefully) be a horde of film music fanatics at the party, and they'll all be eager to talk to the composers. We all know how annoyed Jerry Goldsmith is by that sort of fans.

Your "financial aid" offer/idea is flattering, Mark, but I don't know if it is feasable. I don't want to be a burden to anyone economically, so I hope - like Marian - to scramble enough money myself (which is, I admit, very UNlikely). This all sounds very nice, though.
