Forgive me if a post has appeared on this subject, but I just got through reading the Film Score Monthly article on the ROTK sessions, and the interview with Howard Shore. The writer of the article is compiling a book called "The Music of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy" to be released in time with the Lord of the Rings Complete CD Soundtrack Boxed Set.

According to Shore, he asked, "What exactly shall we put into this set?" Peter Jackson answered, "Everything! And let's give them a rarities disc of early attempts at themes and takes and unusued music."

It looks like a 10-12 disc set, and I'm guessing it will range between $100-$150 in some markets.

The writer also said they would both come out late 2004, and I guess that would tie in with the release of Return of the King Special Expanded Version on DVD.

What a year this will be...and this disc release will certainly shame all other movie series in quality and devotion to movie music fans everywhere.

    J.C.

My feelings are mixed. After this complete box set, what will there be to look forward to?

Answer: Hopefully a four-one-hour-part Hobbit miniseries scored by Shore.

Although it's still coming, the boxed set may not be out this year after all. Howard is incredibly busy with a number of projects--some still unannounced, all VERY exciting. But don't worry, both the book and the boxed set are still on the way.

Clearly the FSM writer has mangled the facts...

I heard because of LOTR success that they are going to do a prequil of The Hobbit.
They would grasp Shore in an instant and he would win yet another award while others that get nominated slap their heads in frustration.

Aww. and I was so geared up to get this boxed set this year. But I guess it will be great Christmas present in Jan next year. Im sure this will be a great and worth the wait. Imagine a boxed set like any other, one which took a whole year just to get done perfectly.

By the way Doug, Would appreciate if you can send me the lyrics to the Seduction theme....Thanks.

Well, I’m not saying for certain that it won’t be out this year, just that 2005 is more likely at this point.

I’ve tried to e-mail you twice, unsuccessfully, it appears. The lyric rights reside with the Tolkien Estate, New Line and Wingnut. The Elvish lyrics are not mine to distribute. Sorry!

Thanks for clarifying on the sets cd release. Well, I suppose youre saving the lyrics for the Book. I guess it will be worth the wait. I also tried to access an elvish language website and even they dont have those lyrics out.

12 CDs!? And people actually WANT this!? The 3 CDs are repetitive enough as it is! I'd much rather stick with them, which show the music in a far better light, even if the 12 CDs were free - the thought of paying $150 for them! I'm sure I'm alone in this, but there we go.

You do stand alone in this, but not in all things. I bought Beyond Borders on the basis of your review of it, and you were right in praising it above the other recent releases of Horner's work. It truly is a fine score and album.

According to The author of the FSM article (and the author of the Music companion book to be released in conjunction with the boxed set), the book will detail all of the development of the themes, how they began as just a few notes in Fellowship, grew for Two Towers, and matured in Return. Plus, there's sure to be material on Tolkien's lyrics and language.

It's coming. The truth is no one is entirely sure of a release date at this point, simply because a project this huge can’t happen without getting a ton of people on the same page at the same time. So the logistics are being worked out, but have no fears, the wheels are in motion.

    Chord Of The Rings!
Exclusive: LOTR Soundtracks to get ‘Extended’ Editions Box Set

    30 April 2004

As any fule no, the fantabulous four-disc extended edition of The Lord of
the Rings: Return of the King will debut later this year. But for those of
you doing decent Gollum impressions – "we wanttsss it!" – Empire can
exclusively reveal that one more superb LOTR extra is on its way, ready to
    sate those Rings withdrawal symptoms.

Howard Shore's Oscar-winning scores for the three movies, easily ranking
amongst the very best soundtracks of recent times, has up until now only
been granted a single CD release for each film. Now, Empire is no Carol
Vorderman, but we calculate that that means that more than six hours of
the score [more than eight if you factor in the Extended Editions] remains
    unreleased.

Well, that's going to change next year, when Shore plans to release a
suitably epic nine-disc set of his most famous work. And, just as the
two-disc DVDs pale in comparison to the Extended Editions, so too will the
    CDs.

“The plan is that we would feature all of the music in the theatrical cuts
of the films," said Shore, talking exclusively to Empire. "Currently, two
discs for [the first], three each for [the second and third films] and a
ninth disc of rarities with host of rare, unreleased music from the films
    with commentary from me.”

The DVD would also feature material covering Shore’s recent transfer of
the trilogy’s music to a live concert setting, The Lord Of The Rings
Symphony. “The DVD would also potentially have a 45-minute documentary
which we shot on the making of the Symphony and full performance of it
done with the Montreal Symphony," he added.

First performed in Wellington in November last year, Shore is currently on
an international tour with the show, reaching London for a performance
with The London Philharmonic Orchestra at The Royal Festival Hall on 23
May and then returning to The Royal Albert Hall on 22 September.

“It’s very gratifying to see the see the music from [the films] find a new
life on the concert stage.” said Shore. “I don’t think there’s ever been a
full concert piece of this size devoted to one particular film or series.”

For those fans who miss out on the London shows, don't fret: Shore also
confirmed to Empire that a two-disc CD release of the show is also in the
    works for release next year.

I found it curious that Shore notes that it would be made up of the complete music from the theatrical cuts of the three films.

Doug, are you able to shed any light whatsoever on the material being entirely from the theatrical cut scores? It would be rather sad, and incredibly surprising if not even the best of the added cues written for the extended editions were not selected to make it onto the discs as well.

I'm scratching my head over the comment really, especially when the extended edition scores built further upon the relationship of motifs from one film to the next.

    Daniel (UK)

PS: Have to admire Empire's 'Exclusive' on something Shore first spoke of well over a year ago and noted how the music would spread over the nine discs at one of the recent Symphony concerts.

    Dan,

Your eye and mine appear to have lighted on the same detail. 'Theatrical cuts' of the films. That's a worry, especially when I think of all the great music buried in TTT:EE - cues like the extended 'Dinner Debate - Mordor Meat', 'Rohirrim Retreat', 'The Fords of Isen', 'An Avalanche', 'Sons of the Steward', 'Faramir's Dream', and the full TTT 'Finale' are too good to not be included in a full release. They're not going to get another chance to do such an extensive release of a score as they are here - let's hope this doesn't lead to yet another case 'oh, but my favorite cue was left out'.

Indeed. In Fellowship Extended too of course, we had some delightful extended and additional cues like the departure from Rivendell, extended Amon Hen (which itself saw the debut of a choir motif that Shore brought back in both cuts of The Two Towers during that 'three hunters' cue) to name but a few notable examples.

I'm incredibly excited to hear the new material in Return of the King.

Even when we had reports it would be an "everything" set, I was always somewhat sceptical that would be the case. Dream scenario obviously, but it would have been astonishing if it truly turned out to be such a thing, and indeed would have surely had to have covered more than nine CDs.

It's obviously still early days for any of us to make any final assumptions about the content, but as I say, I would be shocked and disappointed if at the very least the major cues written for the extended editions did not make the set because. If one was to look at the music on its own, the extended edition cues did as much for the telling of the story in music alone as the restored footage did for the telling of the stories on film. When I think of the films now, I think of the extended editions as I do the extended scores. Even Shore said it’ll be the extended editions that last and he is of course quite right.

I'm going to attend the Q&A/Signing session with Shore in London that Music from the Movies have graciously set up the day before the concert this month, so it'll be interesting to see if anything more is discussed, and if not I may have to ask him myself whilst casually slipping him my copy of Big to sign.

PS: On the subject of Two Towers extended cues, amongst my favourites there included the new 'main title' cue with that slow barely formed version of the Rohan theme, as well as a cue that underscored Treebeard's poetry of the forest. Lovely stuff scoring Merry and Pippin after the flooding of Isengard too of course.
