Indeed - there are so many extended edition cues worth hearing. Personally I don't mind if the extraneous material - e.g. composed by Plan 9 - doesn't make it, but I'd hope to hear all the music in sequence. As for the TTT:EE cues you mentioned - absolutely. There are some fantastic extra M&P cues that really flesh out the music for Ents and hobbits. I particularly love Shore's variations on the traditional Shire themes for the scene where M&P go through Fangorn while Treebeard signs poetry.
Of course, it would be great to hear the unused cues put back in their original positions as well - the unused cue from Gandalf's fight with the Balrog atop Zirak-zigil features some interesting standalone material in addition to a reprise of the choral lyrics from 'Foundations of Stone'. Another unused cue I mentioned before that really hit me between the eyes was 'Faramir's Dream', which has a beautifully dark string melody that leads into a soft horn statement of the Gondor theme.

It would be rather sad, and incredibly surprising if not even the best of the added cues written for the extended editions were not selected to make it onto the discs as well.
I'm scratching my head over the comment really, especially when the extended edition scores built further upon the relationship of motifs from one film to the next.
Daniel (UK)PS: Have to admire Empire's 'Exclusive' on something Shore first spoke of well over a year ago and noted how the music would spread over the nine discs at one of the recent Symphony concerts.

Hi Dan,
Everything I’ve been told indicates that the Special Edition music WILL be included in the boxed set. I can’t say that for an absolute fact, though neither can anyone else, simply because the music has not yet been edited yet. They’re just now starting to discuss how to present this enormous amount of music. But again, I’ve heard nothing about the Special Edition pieces being left aside. I know Howard thinks of the Special Editions as being the definitive versions of the scores, so I’d be shocked if this music weren’t included.
So where did the quote come from? I don’t know. It could have been that something was missed in the transcription or that the discussion was held sometime ago. There was a long period when the content of the boxed set was in flux simply because no one knew what the market would bear. But Peter Jackson made it quite clear that he thought Howard’s complete work should be released, and after this year, people tend to give Jackson his way!

Comforting to know, Doug. Thanks for the reply. Whilst on the subject, aside from the book, are you going to be contributing to any eventual liner notes for the big set or is it still too early to say?

There are several possible ideas out there right now, but it's probably too early to say. I know, I hate it when people toss out those pat answers too! I'll keep you guys updated as much as I'm able.
