I'm gonna hold off on my FINAL opinion until I see the film; there might be some good stuff there that's not on the album.....

Some of the cues do sound like they end too soon. I'm willing to bet there are some good cues missing.

I think Dinko has a good point though.

I know it's not his best. I happen to have a pretty extensive Goldsmith collection and enjoy all aspects of his differing styles. In my opinion, it is a step up from his US MARSHALS/DEEP RISING-type scores of the past few years, minly because there is more thematic diversity in the NEMESIS score. I like the electronic work and feel that the action passages are genuinely engaging and invigorating. I'm not saying they beat "Raisuli Attacks" from WIND AND THE LION or "End of a Dream" from TOTAL RECALL, but I do think NEMESIS is his best, most well-rounded score since 2000's HOLLOW MAN. I will not compare his 1990/200 work to what he wrote in the 70's or 80's. Different decades, different styles, I have to look at them separately.

I had high expectations for Nemesis, and those expectations have not been diminished. I suppose I'm hardly one to express an unbiased opinion here, so being the fan of Goldsmith's work that I am, I have to say that his work on this Trek film (as apparent thus far) is very satisfying. As Mr. TV's Frank said, the action cues are invigorating - and no matter how much they may be compared to Deep Rising or Total Recall (yes, the similarities are there), it's still good stuff! I actually prefer *this* to Deep Rising, and Total Recall is so far removed from the whole thing, it's quite refreshing to hear it invoked in Nemesis' score. And gee-whiz! Scorpion! What a great cue. The chaotic strings that explode mid-way through are terrific.

Let's not forget the gorgeous interlude during "A New Ending." I have a feeling this may have very well been the original Main Title sequence, relegated to the End Titles due to Baird's preference for a darker, more sinister approach. Which works.

All-in-all, a great disc for what I hope will be a very fun film. I find out next Wednesday on the 10th... can't wait.

Are you saying this could be the first bad even-numbered film?

If so, I'll blame B&B (even though it was the Paramount weenies that set the date).

So, I picked up the DVD last night and watched the first 30-minutes or so. I still don't understand much of the criticism aimed at this movie. The dialogue is much sharper than the previous TNG movies, the effects are solid, and aside from a few scenes that were shot in a very pedestrian manner, I feel this entry does stand out as one of the better attempts.

The score works well, and they finally got some humor right.

Maybe Star Trek has had its day, and that is why it did not do well.

That, and TWO TOWERS opened up right after it, taking away all of the box office.

    Trek is dead. R.I.P.

    It's pushing up the daisies.

I spent my money on better DVD's yesterday.

    Jer,

I just watched the season (probably series) finale, and...

    Trek’s passed on!
    Trek is no more!
    It has ceased to be!
It’s expired and gone to television wasteland!
Trek’s a stiff! Bereft of life, it rests in (non)peace!
If Berman/Braga hadn't BS’d it to Paramount, it’d be pushing up the daisies!
Its televistic processes are now History!
    Trek’s off the twig!
Trek’s kicked the bucket, shuffled off its mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!!

    THIS IS AN EX-TREK!!

(And it sure ain;t no Buffy)

Ah Kev, this too shall pass. Sure, Trek's not what it used to be, but as far as my tastes are concerned, that's not necessarily a bad thing. I like each of the series for what they are. Enterprise might not live up to what you want it to be, but that doesn't mean other's aren't going to enjoy it.

And to keep my post on topic, Quill, Nemesis was an alright Trek film. Certainly far ahead of Insurrection, but not as engaging (to me) as First Contact. The score, however, is awesome. I've grown pretty darned fond of it, especially as of late.

Unfortunately, some folks want Trek to exist in one form for all time. Let's recap:

    TOS: A fairly shoddy show
TNG: Started stinky, got great over time
DS9: Again, started stinky, got fantastic toward the end
Voyager: Tried to go back to Star Trek roots with a twist, a watcheable and enjoyable show for several years.
Enterprise: Different, but in my opinion has started off stronger than any of the series to date. Sure I can do without the sexploitation scenes with T'Pal, but other than that it has a strong cast and is an interesting new view of the Star Trek universe.

On the film front, I would still rate Nemesis ahead of all of the odd-numbered films. It's a toss-up for me, Jeron, with respect to First Contact. I feel the screenplay for Nemesis was stronger, but the direction was inconsistent.

Oh well...Trek may be losing steam, but I will continue to be fan for as long as it is around.

I sat down the other day and tried to dissect why I liked/disliked various Trek films. And after listing the pros and cons of each, I've gotta put Nemesis below Final Frontier on my list. No matter its faults, I can still watch ST5 and come away at least partially satisfied. With Nemesis, for me it was a downer the whole time.

While ST5 was the worst of the "original cast," Nemesis is the worst of the TNG cast. IMO, of course.

So, it'd be safe to assume that you think Nemesis is the worst of them all?

Kevin...I tempted to say "To each his own." But....The Final Frontier!!

I don't want to debate this topic to death, but let's look at the pros and cons (which are of course debateable themselves!):

    Nemesis Pros:
    Acting
Dialogue (particularly during the Shinzon/Pciard exchanges)
    Special Effects
    Strong Score

    Nemesis Cons:
    Inconsistent Direction
    A couple poorly done sets
    Weak exit for Data

    Final Frontier Pros:
    Humor
Continued strong chemistry between the three leads
    Strong score

    Final Frontier Cons:
Poor Special Effects (apparently due to budget constraints per Shatner)
    Ridiculous Plot
Overweight Uhura dancing naked on the sand dunes (enough said!)

Of course you might disagree with me on all of these points, and I would still put Nemesis ahead of Generations and Insurrection. I was pleased with an outsider being brought into direct, but I think Frakes would have done a fine job with what I felt was a superior screenplay.

(Side note--having watched it again it appears that David Palmer's staff from 24 have become Romulans. The VP is original Praetor and Mike N. is the lead Commander. That's probably only interesting to perhaps one other person on the board...but oh well.)

One of the most fun aspects of watching 24 this season was trying to keep track of all the TREK alumni in the cast! I think at least 8 characters on the show were either guest stars or recurring characters on TNG and DS9.
