John Williams retire? Yeah right. Shouldn't Goldsmith retire? He's written so many patriotic/militaristic themes, it'd be ridiculous to think he's breaking any new ground with this Last Castle stuff...

I don't care if someones 185 years old, if they can still write music and enjoy it, then do it.And Goldsmith rules.

It shows we are developing. (Though, there's nothing wrong with taking something that's already there and making it better.)

I'm simply referring to the term- breaking new ground. It's a tad odd, as it seems to imply digging a hole (or a grave for that matter).I always thought that "breaking ground" was, in a way, taking something and making it better. Seems it would be more like "adding ground" than breaking it.
Hey... I just realized something...
I really don't care.

Although the tone of this topic has been frivolous, I thought I'd chime in with a few thoughts.I can't say I've been entirely thrilled by the recent output of either of these gents. The auteur theory suggests that an artist's later works are often their most developed, but there's another theory about jumping the shark (which in Williams case happened way later than Jaws
). Towards the end of their careers, Rozsa, Delerue, Herrmann and others weren't quite tapped out but they did seem to repeat themselves. You could argue the same about Williams and Goldsmith.I can't say anough good things about 60s Goldsmith or 70s Williams and it's obvious that they are still able to produce good scores. It's just that they have a lot more weaker scores to their credit these days than they did in days past.
Still, a master craftsman is in demand. These guys are pros who've been at it for so long that producers still trust them to know what to do with their films. Even younger composers who have great scores ahead of them don't have the respect (or job offers) these guys do.
If I were to go see every new film I could, and there were no more Williams or Goldsmith scores, I think I'd feel the loss, even if their scores don't have the quality associated with their past work. Having just seen The One with its horrible Trevor Rabin score the thought of that guy going on while people clamor for Williams and Goldsmith to retire is plainly ridiculous.

I'm still a big fan of Hong Kong style cinema despite its having gone mainstream. Sadly, that means I'll go see Jet Li or Jackie Chan in anything (including Lethal Weapon 4).
