The prologue played "The Perfect Storm" by James Horner.

During the opeining ceromonies, they played "Snowy River".

Also played the theme of "Chariots of Fire".

Of course John Williams' "Olympic Fanfare and Themes" was always present.

    Film music rocks!

NP: Actually watching the opening ceromonies.

Scott, that's awesome! I'm especially happy they included Snowy River. You know how much THAT score means to me. Pure excellence! Yes, film music rocks! John Williams rocks! The whole dang thing just simply rocks.

Ah!, England get started with a Gold for the 1km cycling......The thing that gets me everytime is how boring and dreary our National Anthem sounds. 'God Save The Queen' is just such a total drone when compared to some of the others, especially America's.

Land of Hope and Glory would have made our anthem the best in the world, though I believe it was Elgar's wish that it never become the anthem!?, or the gorgeous JERUSALEM by Parry. But 'Save The Queen'?? How inspiring 'yawn' where's the sarcastic Icon when you need one.

Any other Brits here agree with me??!!

Well I'm not a Brit, (but I'm in the Commonwealth) but I'd have to agree that anyone would be proud to have 'Land of Hope and Glory' as their anthem.

I personally love the French one.

Does anyone know which music was played while Cathy Freeman waited for the cauldron/ufo to go up to form the torch? Was is original music? Thanks.

Timmer, I always thought your anthem was quite nice (although Land of Hope and Glory would be better than almost any official anthem, of course ). Do you know the AUSTRIAN anthem? THAT's boring. Just plain boring. No wonder the soccer players never remember the text.

Yup. Last night I heard some of Goldsmith's "Small Soldiers," and tonight I heard "October Sky" by Mark Isham, and a song from "Chants From the Thin Red Line."

Also, in the background of women's gymnastics, I heard part of "The Mummy" by Goldsmith, and a cut from "Truman Show," but I'm not sure if it was the Dallwitz or the Glass. I think they were being used for somebody's floor exercise.

One of the Russian female gymnasts on the floor exercise was announced as dancing to MI2. I'm not familiar with that score and I almost thought I was hearing Mask Of Zorro. But there were those commentators, background sound, etc.
I like the Olympics in general, and it is fun to play 'name that tune' for film music played during intros, documentories and floor exercise routines.

I forgot about this but on the very first day they showed some film of them building the new Olympic Stadium and they were playing Zimmer's Gladiator.

I remember hearing something else familiar during the Men's Gymnastics, thanks for pointing out it was 13th Warrior.

All right, I'm feeling an awful bit of Team Spirit right now. How 'bout some enterprising soul put together a compilation of ALL the music that was used for the Olympics? We could select the one to make the discs, someone to make the artwork, etc. If the person "in charge" of making the discs didn't have some of the cues, somebody who DOES could send those cues along to him/her. I'm rambling like mad here, but if somebody can make sense of this, simplify it and tell me if you think it's a good idea. Not for sale or anything. Sort of like our own little Varese Club.

I don't think there is any ONE score dude at NBC. NBC has 3,000 people there in Sydney working on this production, so I am sure there are several dudes doing it. Plus, using film music for these sentimental bios of sports figures has gotten so popular, I would guess there are hundreds of people responsible for this much movie music in the Olympics broadcast....

Somebody at one German TV channel who's doing the movie previews must also have a great passion for scores, particularly Goldsmith, as he "scores" the previews with them. Sometimes, you get to hear snippets of his scores after every commercial break.
