Just looks like a bunch of his concert music that happened to be used in films.

I'll look for it anyway. My Malcolm Arnold collection is severely lacking.

This cd looks great and will be next in my collection. Malcom Arnold is a very talented composer and everyone needs one cd of Mr. Arnold's.

    Hey Guenther--Where have you been?

Arnold is on my top 12 list of composers (I tried to narrow it to 10 and had nightmares).

As Martha Stewart would say, more Arnold is a good thing. Actually, it's a great thing! I hope this sells enough for them to try a Volume 3--that is if they can find sheet music for another one (which might be why these selections seem like concert versions of Arnold scores)

I just picked up the Chandos Rawsthorne film music CD--another good thing.

    Lou,

I was at the Herrmann forum, where else

Yes, all are concert suites, here are the
    details:

    Suite from 'Trapeze' 13:29
-this was reconstructed by Philip Lane
    listening to the old LP.

Overture from 'The Roots of Heaven' 4:49
-this is the original Overture composed
    for the NY premiere.

Symphonic Study 'Machines', Op. 30 6:12
-this is one of the two occurences Arnold
made a suite out of his film related
assignments. (The other one is the "Sound
    Barrier" rhapsody)

Suite from 'No Love for Johnnie' 10:31
    -completly reconstructed by Philip Lane
listening to the video and having a piano reduction for the main title only.

    Suite from 'David Copperfield' 11:10
-arranged by Philip Lane from the score

Scherzetto for Clarinet and Orchestra from 'You Know What Sailors Are' 2:34
-done by Christopher Palmer some 10
    years ago.

Ballade for Piano and Orchestra from
    'Stolen Face'* 8:05
-this was arranged by Philip Lane from
    the original score. Fantastic!

Comedy Suite (Exploits for Orchestra) from 'The Belles of St Trinian's' 8:00
This was done by Christopher Palmer for
the first Chandos disk, even recorded
by Hickox! But sadly too many errors got
into that reconstruction so Philip Lane
had to get over it again.

Fantasy on Christmas Carols from 'The Holly and The Ivy' 8:55
-done by Christopher Palmer also some 10 years ago

Postcard from the Med from 'The Captain's Paradise' 4:05
    -Highlights from the score, completly
reconstructed by Philip Lane listening to
    the video.

    Lot of work for Philip!

    Lou,

another thing. You are right there is very few manuscript material available, thats why Philip Lane (and some others) have to reconstruct so much, that limits the amount of music that can be recorded.

You know that next year Marco Polo will release the Morgan/Stromberg Arnold's ROOTS OF HEAVEN / DAVID COPPERFIELD. These will be quite complete re-recordings.

A Volume 3 from Chandos is certainly possible. A lot depends how good it will sell and how good some suites fare in the concert hall.

I think this disk will even sell better that Volume 1. No River Kwai here, but Lane uses the original orchestrations for his suites, something that wasn't Palmer's strong thing.

If Philip reconstructs some suites from scratch, plus uses the material left (sadly not much high caliber films) there is certainly enough for a third CD.

BTW, there might be a chance that some of the old LPs could see the light on CD, but thats just what some people want to do at this stage, no legalities sorted out.

    G.

I hope the fact that a lot of the Arnold films aren't well known here doesn't keep Chandos from recording them---I didn't know the films on the Rawsthorne disc that well.

It seems to me if a lot of this music is coming from listening to it and going from there that there should be a lot of Arnold music to choose from.

I never liked Palmer's orchestrations although Jay Cocks explained to me that they were done so standard orchestras could play them without having to assemble the groups required to play the music as done for the film.

I looked up Arnold's filmography and to be sure there are a lot of Britsh films that I've never heard of. But, if they sound anything like the rest of Arnold's film music, then they'll be great.

In any case, it seems to me, that with 1984, The Thin Red Line, The Chalk Garden, Island in the Sun, Suddenly Last Summer, and On the Fiddle, a pretty solid Volume 3 could emerge.

I saw Lisa not that long ago and thought it had great music. I saw Wings of Danger some years ago and the main title alone stunned me. Arnold's score to Africa--Texas Style is supurb.

If you have any in with Chandos tell them to keep pressing on with this.

    Lou,

I am partially to blame for the inclusion
of TRAPEZE, NO LOVE FOR JOHNNIE and THE
CAPTAINS PARADISE, but the ones really
responsible for the CD are the Couzens
    (Chandos) family, Philip Lane, Anthony
Day and good ol' Jay Cox who fought very
hard for it. Jay wrote the liners, BTW.

I can try to make suggestions to Anthony.

    >1984, The Thin Red Line,
    >Suddenly Last Summer

Would have to be reconstructed from scratch.
But would be wise to do at least one for
    marketing reasons.

    >The Chalk Garden, Island in the Sun,
    >On the Fiddle

    Some piano reductions exist.

    >Africa--Texas Style

Parts exist for this one apparently.

JEC is right, If Africa-Texas Style has sheet music you should record it, it's really good. Thank Jay for me for pushing for another Arnold CD.

Will do. Without Jay we wouldn't have this
CD or the upcoming Morgan/Stromberg ROOTS
    & COPPERFIELD.

I'll push for "Africa-Texas Style"... Anyone
    interrested in Tamahine?

This was on the list for No. 2, but didn't
made it, as no one knows this film.
