Hey, has anyone picked up the newest collection of Malcolm Arnold film music from Chandos? It was released last week, and from the looks of the cover, appears to be one heck of a swingin' affair. Only problem is, I've never associated Sir Malcolm Arnold with anything that "swings." Marches, yes, but swing? Eeks!http://www.moviemusic.com/title.asp?id=malcolmarnold2

Uhh... I could take a clue from the first seven tracks, as they are from Trapeze, but that's not the kind of swing I associate with shag-a-looking cover art!

I seem to be on a Malcolm Arnold kick at the moment - I'm listening to his score from BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI which is isolated on the R2 double-DVD set, in mono (by the sound of it) and betraying its age slightly - but it's nice to hear it in full. But if it's "swinging" Arnold you're after, you've just GOT to get his classical album DANCES (Naxos 8.553526) which (as you might guess from the title) is full of lively English/Scottish/Irish/Welsh dance music - lovely, lively and lyrical, a million miles away from that "Kwai" type sound he uses in his scores. Give it a whirl if you can get hold of it - you'll love it!

Hey, if Chandos wants to put a picture of Alistair Sim on the cover in drag, that's their affair. The Belles of St Trinians is a great comedy and well loved in England as is Sim. I think I would have went for another cover design myself but I don't make these decisions. Chandos should hire me to produce their records, but that's for another topic...

I suspect the thought the Sim/Trinian's
cover would generate the most of sales
in England. Face it the St Trinian's
films are very unknown outside the UK.
Internationally it would have been wiser
to go for TRAPEZE on the cover.posted 12-08-2000 03:07 AM PT (US)

Peter,I think there are a lot of "swinging"
Arnold pieces. Most obvious perhaps
the 2nd Clarinet Concerto (written
for Benny Goodman).A lot of the source music cues
Malcolm wrote for 1950ies films are
very jazzy, BTW.Or the score to one of his last films
THE RECKONING is astonishing. John
Barry / Roy Budd / Lalo Schifrin
fans are in for a surprise.

Hey Guenth, is the score for The Reckoning available? This film is now on my list to see. Thanks for the tip!

sadly just in the film. The film was an
apparent influence (film and music wise)
to GET CARTER made a few years later. I
hope someone rediscovers this film and
puts it on DVD with isolated score!
