Topic: Galaxy Quest has arrived

Went to see Galaxy Quest for the first time today. Loved the movie. When I got home and looked in the mailbox, my copy of the Galaxy Quest CD had arrived from Supercollector. From what I can tell, having listened to the soundtrack just hours after seeing the movie, it appears to be farily complete. 49:32 minutes of music. I like the way the composer, David Newman, borrows from the Star Trek scores of Goldsmith and Horner. It's not silly, it's respectful and it really adds to the action cues.
My only gripes are that it doesn't have the end titles and the length of the cues aren't printed anywhere. Most of the cues are very short. A couple are over 3 minutes. That's why I would have liked a good six or seven minute end title.
BTW, is this a 1999 release? If so, it SHOULD get an Oscar nomination. One of the best scores of the year. One of the better movies, too.

Hey Mark - I agree with everything you said. Sadly, I ordered my copy about 20 minutes after it was made available online - and it still has not arrived. I'm hoping it'll be here on Monday. If not, and I'm in a bad mood, you'll know why! =DJeron

FYI, the end title to th film was edited together from a number of other cues heard during the score at the very last minute on the dub stage for the film.So you have it, but just not in the edited form.

I just went and saw the movie again today (people I know haven't seen it yet), and I still thought it was hilarious. I'll definitely get the DVD when it comes out (whenever that is).But alas, the CD was not in the mail when I got home.
Like Jeron, I hope I will see it Monday. Of course, he's closer to CA than I am, so you never know. But I will be in a bad mood as well.

Better yet, why not release other scores from David Newman's filmography, like Matilda, The Sandlot, Matilda, Coneheads, The War of the Roses, Matilda, Disorganized Crime, The Brave Little Toaster, Matilda and Throw Momma from the Train.P.S. Did I forget to mention Matilda? Just making sure.

How is the artwork for the disc? Is there anything to the design, or is it nothing to scream about and the score becoming the only reason to buy it (which the whole reason I will, regardless- I just like little comestic/aesthetic appreciation to the package to make it worthwhile)does it have the poster and logo or something else on the front cover?

Widescreen the packaging is very colorful, lots of pics, and some comments on the movie.
The back cover is very funny, it looks like a Star Trek CD (Inssurection or First Contact)
It has everthing a commiercial CD would have.
I would have just liked to have seen some composer comments.Galaxy Quest 5/5!

Widescreen:Like the movie, like the score, itself, the cover is decidedly witty.
I like the line "The Show Was Cancelled . . . But The Adventure Has Only Begun" showing in the window along the spine on the front.
Has Tim Allen, hung over in sunglasses, Sigourney weaver looking fetching (wihtout cleavage) and Alan Rickman looking stoic. The Protector is shooting out of the TV screen showing the three stars.
Inside is a plot synopsis and many stills.

I didn't get mine either!!!! I'm SUPER MAD!!! What in the heck is taking so long? I ordered it the NIGHT it was made available for order... hell, a friend of mine SENT in his payment and has already received his cd. What is this???? I paid with a credit card! I bought two copies!!!!GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.......
Jeron is VERY ANGRY. I'm gonna call and figure out what their problem is.
---------------
8 minutes later.......They said all the cds were sent out on Thursday to those who ordered them on Wednesday night... and that yes, even a few who live close haven't received them yet. They have no explanation as to why the postal service is taking so long, and that we please just be patient, that the mail cannot be tracked due to it's priority shipping.
That doesn't make me feel the least bit better.

I ordered mine from Super Collector on 2/1/00 not 2 hours after they went on sale, and I still don't have mine yet (I'm in Florida). Oh well.Thor, I have a question for you. You said you ordered a cd from someone in Australia. I'm having problems with a guy in Australia that I ordered a cd from, too. I wonder if it's the same guy. Could you email me and let me know who it is, and I'll let you know who the guy I'm dealing (or trying to) with, too.
Thanks

Hey, guys (any gals, too?)!"Galaxy Quest" has made an appearance on eBay. The seller has indicated it's a promo not commercially available, which strikes me as being untrue, since all the specialty shops carry it and sell it legitimately. A non-commercial promo is one which the composer presses for himself and his own uses, normally to send to Academy voters to consider his work for an Oscar...or to directors for work consideration.
Does anyone else have a problem with this item being hawked on eBay when it's readily avaialble for $20? The bid has gone over $39 so far.[This message has been edited by Ron Pulliam (edited 10 February 2000).]

I've seen similar things happen in another area I have an interest in. I predict we will all be amazed at how much this CD sells for on eBay. I, for one, refuse to do business over there. There should be a way to warn people when a scam like this goes down. If eBay really cared about its customers, they'd provide a way.

In theory, eBay has a consumer protection squad. I've notified eBay about a seller hawking a bootleg of an item (and not saying it was a bootleg) and claiming it was impossible to find the title at a time when that title had been reissued and was selling for a reasonable price. The response was that they could not prove or disprove my claim. I told them that I could prove it if they truly cared to hear the truth, but they never got back to me.
And yet they will move instantly when someone pulls a hoax, like offering a kidney for $10,000. How can they prove someone wasn't willing to sell one of his kidneys?
Ah, well.
I believe in free enterprise. I like the idea of having a place to go to find things I know I will never find on my own. If the price is right, I don't mind paying it.
But I hate it when someone lies about an item just to gouge out more than the item is worth. If "Galaxy Quest" had only been issued in small numbers and for the composer's use only, it would be worth quite a bit of money to a collector/music lover. I'd have no problem with that. But this promo is "commercially available" at soundtrack specialty shops.
I guess that's the difference between film music lovers and film music "collectors" -- you can be a lover and a collector, but it seems to me that a "collector" (who must have some degree of love or passion for the music but who seems not to care for others who love the same thing) has no true end but monetary gain. That kind of person is a whole different animal.

Well, it finally arrived in the mail today! Rah! Rah!
As to the eBay silliness, the CD is considered a promo (it even says so on the disc). "Not commercially available" means (I think)that you just can't run to Best Buy or one of the places like that and pick it up. You have to buy it from a specialty place.
It's happened before. When the 4-disc Twilight Zone set came out, it was up on eBay a few days later. All I can say is caveat emptor and the like. People should do research before bidding on this stuff. I remember last year when a promo came out for "Love of the Game" and it went for over $200. The sad thing is the "real" release had the same cues.
I've had quite a bit of luck buying things off eBay, but I know what I'm looking for and know what something is worth.
