I was at the Detroit Concert and I handed Goldsmith my Powder cd insert for him to sign. He took one look and said, "Oooo! This is one of my favorites!" It's mine too. Truly a rich, beautiful and magical score. Overly sentimental? Only if you don't feel like indentifying with the characters situations. I personally feel that sentimentality is a subjective response and is based entirely on a person's willingness to open themselves to a particular emotional stimulus. Since all movies are reflections of reality, the genuinness and sincerity of a movie is relative only to how serious a person takes it. If you are ensnared in the movie you will get a lot more out of it than someone who is riddled with doubts from the beggining.
As for the whole homo-eroticism... Why is this an issue? Do we get all frosted and ruffled at movies that have hetro-eroticism? Hitler banned smoking. Does that mean anyone who doesn't like smoking is a Nazi? I like Powder the movie and the score for how they make me feel. It isn't science. It's art. Don't fret too much about my friends. Ciao.
