Congratulations! Sweet 16. Now, if you don't mind me saying, get over the "FSM" thing and be yourselves. This message board is about movie music, not about FSM!If I hear about "FSM" much more, I think I will ban "FSM" just like I've banned "****" and "****" - how's that? Will you guys be able to survive?
Let's get back to the subject, and, if you must, sprinkle it with the occasional haiku.

My dear PeterK,
I understand your feelings;
Will you grant me mine? This is my first thread
To introduce myself to
All the people here.I find etiquette
To be quite universal:
We should be polite.Stop criticizing
Me for trying to be kind
To the Natives here.WE are invaders!
WE are breaking down the walls;
I want to bring peace.posted 01-19-2000 10:24 PM PT (US) PeterK

Chris, I agree with your sentiments. However, if you insist you are invading, you must conquer me. If I were you, I wouldn't try it. Just stick to your movie music guns and you'll be fine.PeterK

PeterK;
Several folks have likened the situation over at the FSM board to the sinking of the TITANIC...hopefully that does NOT mean that we were too stupid to look out for ice.
To extend the analogy somewhat:
We aren't conquering. Like you, we have come to know each other a little from our postings, and there is a loose comraderie. If FSM sank, you might look at us as the folks on the lifeboat. As another head bobs up, we exclaim, "Oh! You made it, too!". Nothing assaultive or exclusionary intended. Judging from the postings, all of the "FSM folks" like it here about as much as I do. I can only speak for myself, but.....I think you'll find that we are polite (as you folks are in letting us join in), and grateful to have a forum to meet, listen & speak. While I will continue to monitor conditions at that sadly diseased board, I can tell you that I am glad to be HERE. Heck, I've already posted about 4.73 times as often here as "over there".
How many times until I can shed the "Doesn't Post Much" tagline? Sigh.......
Anyway, no harm intended here, Peter. And Thank You all for the hospitality. I post more often here because I like the warm "vibe" -- and because I seem to be flying under DANIEL2's radar.......NP: THE LAST STARFIGHTER (Safan) 4.5/5*

Hi, I used to post quite a few messages at Peterk's old board. I wondered where everyone had disappeared to from that site. I used to post on the FSM board, but usually I just read the messages. It's nice to see everyone here. I always enjoy reading the posts. Oh and by the way in case you may remember me Peter, I finally got a copy of David Arnold's GODZILLA score.NP: THE MYSTERIANS

THE MYSTERIANS!?!Surely you jest. You are actually watching the video and listening to that wonderful score. Or maybe that heroic main theme is just running through your head. You couldn't actually be listening to a CD. No, you're probably like me and recorded the music off the movie onto a cassette. Right?
Or does this score exist on CD.
Tell me.
BTW, isn't it interesting how similar it is to a theme in Elfman's "Beetlejuice?"

Mr. Flake,Mr. Ifukube's splendid score to THE MYSTERIANS (Japanese title CHIKYU BOEIGUN, or, literally, EARTH DEFENSE FORCE) has been issued SEVERAL times!
Various suites on various LPs over the past two decades; then a COMPLETE CD release on a double CD that included the original GODZILLA and RODAN; and a separate single MYSTERIANS-only CD a couple of years ago, which included alternate takes of various cues, and the soundtrack of the trailer, and other goodies. (I don't have that one myself, but I do have the aforementioned double CD. And subsequent double CDs in the same series, which included some of the same alternate takes of THE MYSTERIANS and many other scores.)
Man, where've you been? There's been piles and piles of Ifukube releases, ESPECIALLY in the past five or so years! Since he did the popular scores to GODZILLA VS. KING GHIDORAH (1991), GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA (1992), GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA (1993) and GODZILLA VS. DESTROYER (1995), his work's been more in demand than ever!
The double CD which features GODZILLA, RODAN and THE MYSTERIANS (aka GOJIRA, SORA NO DAIKAIJU RADON and CHIKYU BOEIGUN) has remained in print since its first issue, as it comprises three of Akira Ifukube's fantasy scores that the average fan tends to want to own the most.
Issued by Futureland Records, originally in 1987; many successive reprintings.

Rocco, you seem to forget that you are the exception to the rule.OK???
PETERK:
"Let's get back to the subject, and, if you must, sprinkle it with the occasional haiku."
Which is what I did.
I obeyed YOUR order, out of respect for your position here as administrator.
I composed a Haiku for YOU.
In direct response to your request.
Sadly, I made a poor choice of words, saying that "We are invaders"...if you look at what I wrote, it seems to me that it was totally benign.
PeterK, you took offense.
No offense was intended.
I was simply endeavoring to paint the picture as it is in reality.

H Rocco:I've been out here in fly-over country (the part of the US people fly over to get from one coast to the other) my whole life. I go through soundtrack bins locally on a religious basis.
Only recently (like last year) have I been able to find some of my favorite soundtracks on the Internet. It never occurred to me that there would actaully be a Mysterians CD.
Please, if it's not too much trouble, does anyone know what website would be most likely to have this -- just to cut down on my surfing time. I'm going to need the exact title(s) if possible. I've found a few Ifukube scores out there, some with outrageous prices. I think I'd like the double CD with Godzilla and Rodan. There's something that looks like it over at International Discs, but I want to be sure I'm getting the right one before I send in the credit card number.
Would appreciate any help.
BTW, I took no offense -- I'm too excited about getting an actual Mysterians CD into my stereo.

Mr. Flake,I just looked over at International Discs to see what they had. NONE of the titles listed are the one I was talking about. Sorry.
I'll have a bit more time later today, or early tomorrow, to do a better search -- but you might try Footlights Records (www.footlight.com) (notice I wrote FootLIGHT not FootLIGHTS -- FootLIGHTS will take you someplace else altogether). Screen Archives and those guys are always good bets, but perhaps you already tried that. Who knows.
Funny thing about the Inernational Discs site, most of their Ifukube titles are literal translations from the Japanese. Few people over here are gonna recognize those titles -- they know YOG, not "Battle in the Pacific" (actually DECISIVE BATTLE! MONSTERS IN THE SOUTH SEAS -- but then I hardly wish to be pedantic ... )
The last MYSTERIANS-only CD release was not long ago. They're out of print, but should still be available. Keep your eyes peeled. In particular, try Footlights. E-mail them if the thing isn't on the list, they often stock stuff that isn't on the website.
If you have a Japanese bookstore or video store in your area, they should also be able to order any book, video or CD you want. As I said, I think the original GODZILLA/RODAN/MYSTERIANS is still in print. So that would be worth a try. They have Japanese bookstores even in "the flyover states," so don't give up hope too soon.
lots of information, no proper answers ... ah well ...

Tried Footlight, but I was put off by the price. I found a better price at Intrada.Just finished placing the order.
Boy, I'm glad you guys from FSM came aboard! We got yer Spanish, we got yer Vietnamese, we got yer Religious, we got yer Adult, we got yer African, we got yer New Age, but we ain't got no Japanese bookstores here in Tarrant County Texas.
Thanks,

Marc,I'm from Temple, Tx. I have a pretty good selection of Ifukube's scores on cd. In fact I think I have all of his Sci-fi scores he did for Toho. They are all on the Futureland label. I got mine at footlight when they were first released. I have all of his GODZILLA scores and the rest to include: RODAN, THE MYSTERIANS, VARAN, LATTITUDE ZERO, BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE, WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS, ATRAGON, DAGORA, KING KONG ESCAPES, YOG and FRANKENSTIEN CONQUERS THE WORLD. I know he has scored many more movies, but as far as the Futureland series I think that is it.

The Futureland series (the black-and-gold double CD issues is what we're talking about, right?) also includes his mammoth score to THE BIRTH OF JAPAN (1959, also called THE THREE TREASURES and AGE OF THE GODS); a separate issue of his score to the animated film LITTLE PRINCE & THE 8-HEADED DRAGON (1963, I think -- could look it up), the complete MAJIN trilogy (2 discs total), and another with excerpts from WHALE GOD, THE STORY OF OSAKA CASTLE (aka DAREDEVIL IN THE CASTLE), and a couple others. That one, or another one (they're not in front of me and my memory's slipping) includes the complete score for the short film BIRTH OF THE JAPANESE ISLANDS (not to be confused with the much different BIRTH OF JAPAN), a full stereo score written for a movie shown at Expo 70. Director was Yoshimitsu Banno, who next made GODZILLA VS. THE SMOG MONSTER (without Ifukube). Some of that music showed up in the trailer to SMOG MONSTER, though, and again in the following movie GODZILLA VS. GIGAN (all of that stock music from earlier Ifukube scores, one of them not even a monster score -- the wonderful BOSS OF THE UNDERWORLD, 1959).Technically, the double-CD issues GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA, VS. MECHAGODZILLA and VS. DESTROYER are also part of the same Futureland series.
They did NOT do one for GODZILLA VS. KING GHIDORA, which is why that particular double CD is so irritating. Why produce a "drama CD" -- tons of dialogue excerpts -- in the age of videotape? And tons of music was missing. That score was finally issued properly on a single, complete CD.
I will always have a particular soft spot for KING GHIDORA because I was THERE on day 2 of Mr. Ifukube's recording the score ... He personally conducted the last bit recorded (usually he conducts rehearsals and otherwise lurks in the sound room).

The GODZILLA cds I have are the single Futureland ones with the black and gold. I have the double disc sets of GODZILLA V.S. MECHAGODZILLA and DESTROYER. The other cds are singles as well, but the are in a numbered series to include Masaru Sato's HALF HUMAN and GORATH (I not sure who did that film). I know there are many compilations of Ifukube's works. It must have been an honor to witness him conducting. I don't know if you have been to this site, but it is pretty neet. http://www.idsi.net/larryt/Godzilla/godzilla.htm He has a large selection of Japanese scores with track listings and his own reviews.

GORATH was scored by Kan Ishii, a contemporary of Ifukube's (and a family friend, through his composer father Baku Ishii). He did at most a dozen pictures at Toho circa 1960-1964, then returned to his concert works and teaching. His most famous work at the time Toho contracted Kan Ishii was the ballet "Marimo," which was performed in the then-Soviet Union.
