An update. I've just spoken to the Barbican box office.

Jerry Goldsmith is very ill and unable to travel to London to conduct the concert, but he will send a message to be read out to those attending. Dirk Brossé will replace him as conductor, and the programme remains the same.

Argh. There have been rumours for over a week, but they denied them and said he was perfectly fine and will be conducting...and now, just one day after the last time I could have cancelled my hotel reservation, they announce this. Of course he could have fallen ill very suddenly, but given the circumstances, I highly doubt that.

Anyway, I wish him all the best. Hopefully it's really something unexpected this time, and not still his longtime chemo.

I certainly hope no one cancels. It is deeply sad that he is too unwell to make the concert, but it nevertheless remains an important concert in celebration of his birthday.

I'd hope the turn out will be as strong and as gracious as it would be were he to be there himself.

The Barbican as usual is doing a great job in customer service. They’re ringing ticket holders to inform them of the change. I had a call from them moments ago.

    Daniel

The most important thing right now is that he gets better, and I hope he does so fast.

I'm pretty sure I speak for all of us when I saw we sih him a speedy recovery, and back to what he (and us) love best: music.

Hear hear. This is sad news indeed. To the London gang: I sincerely hope nobody drops out because of this. See you guys on Tuesday.

They rang me up as well (although I already saw the news on Music From The Movies's site). It's a disappointment, but I'm still attending; no one thinks any less of Alien and The Sand Pebbles because they weren't conducted by Goldsmith, right? Plus if this was a concert of Danny Elfman music no one would expect him to be conducting...

He also won an Oscar for THE OMEN and he didn't conduct that one either.

I'm still going. It's his music.

I wasn't going anyway, but I just wanted to mention that Dirk Brossé is a really good conductor. I met him a few times through a mutual friend. Great guy and he also has written some nice scores, e.g. Marie.

He has conducted Hans Zimmer's music in Gent, Belgium. He's actually always conducts at that film festival.

    One question about the concert:

That piece between the two performances of Supergirl in the encore... what was it? (Surely not Timeline, part of his unused score for?)

That was actually my backup thought. Too bad they couldn't have thrown that in as a bonus.

A very good concert to be sure. At times I had the feeling that the playing wasn't quite as refined as if Goldsmith himself had been there, but it certainily was still very good. Over too fast though, since Brosse took several of the pieces at a speedy pace.

STTMP used that crescendo thingy Goldsmith has given it over the last years, but not quite as extreme as he usually does it I thought...which apparently made it easier to play too, they pulled it off nearly flawlessly this time. (I still think it isn't a good idea to put this at the beginning of a concert, I have the feeling the LSO brass section has to warm up a bit before attempting something like this)

Looney Tunes was very good, though the electric bass in Car Trouble was really missing - it just wasn't there, no other instrument took over that part. Very weird suite overall, with a kind of no-ending. Fun though, it should be whacky I think.

Small Soldiers was good, but missed the humour a bit. Gremlins good as well, though not outstanding (it started out with the normal concert version of the rag, then went into the middle section from Gremlins 1, and ended with the last part of the credits from 2, complete with string counterpoint and Gizmo's theme).

Generals Suite - very good, but the percussion was so loud, it was at times difficult to hear the rest of the music.

TV Themes - very good as well, a wonderful Voyager, though Barnaby Jones wasn't quite as stunning as in 2001 or 2003.

The Agony and the Ecstasy prologue was left out for some reason (they didn't mention it in the programme, or during the opening speech). There were two encores instead, Supergirl ( ) and Wild Rovers. I'd never heard Wild Rovers before, but it sounded fine to me. Supergirl was excellent, particularly the second time they played it (yes). Not quite as amazing as the encore of it last year, but definitely better than the opening performance from last year.

At the beginning of the concert, they reported what Goldsmith had said during a one hour telephone talk the day before. He was very disappointed not to attend, but had been advised to stay at home by his doctor, a decision he had been fighting for a long time, until finally giving in. Well, he might not have been there, but at told us "I love you all" through the notes from that phone call.

The LSO certainly were happy with Brosse as well. They were all clapping at the end of the concert, and during the encores they seemed to really give everything they had (particularly after Brosse said that of course the most important thing of the evening was the great music of Jerry Goldsmith) - during the second Supergirl, I actually heard a brass counterpoint I'd never noticed before.

Brosse himself refused to step on the podium during most of the applause, he stood beneath it with the orchestra, perhaps to leave the applause to Goldsmith. At the end, he held up the conductor's score book, which of course caused a final uproar of applause.

I still hope Goldsmith gets well enough again to do another LSO concert himself, but even without him, this one was worth all the troubles of getting there.

I'd just like to apologise for my non-appearance. I was there (honest!), but had been delayed on my way to meeting you, & despite walking the full length of both floors of the Barbican beforehand, still completely failed to find you. I had a brief look around after the concert, but I had to take off pretty sharpish, as I was working too flippin' early the following morning.

Glad to know that you enjoyed it too though. And I think I may have to buy Wild Rovers now. It is still currently available, isn't it? I wish he programmed his Western scores more often actually.

Good to hear that. A shame we weren't able to find you, but at least you didn't miss the concert.

I hope so. Though...it was coupled with Great Train Robbery, and that disc certainly isn't easy to get (I only have a copy of the GTR part). Dunno if there's ever been another release on CD.
