My oh my after all these years I'm finally going to my first film music concert with a real live film music composer at the podium and here I thought it would be next week in Detroit but would you believe Maurice Jarre is conducting the Florida Orchestra a whole 10 minutes away from my humble abode in Clearwater and tomorrow night it's Tampa and then Saturday it's St. Pete? I don't know if I can handle all this prosperity!

Here is the program according to yesterday's St. Petersburg Times:

    ACT ONE
    Overture from Grand Prix
    Dead Poets Society Suite
    Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
    Jesus of Nazareth Suite
    Theme from Villa Rides
    Is Paris Burning? Waltz
    A Passage to India Suite
    INTERMISSION
    ACT TW0
    Dr. Zhivago Suite
    Building the Barn from Witness
    I Dreamed of Africa Suite
    Lawrence of Arabia Suite

"Note: Jarre will spend much of the second half of the program speaking about his career as a composer for film and television. Musical selections are subject to change."

I don't know how I missed all this, but I've decided I will go to the box office and most humbly but firmly inform them that I am a very serious film music appreciator and would appreciate them supplying me with the absolute best seat available. You can do this sort of thing when you're a party of one! And then after the show I will approach whomever in charge I can find and wrangle my way backstage for a visit and handshake and perhaps a "May I send your regards to Mr. Goldsmith up in Detroit next week, Mr. J?"

Now everybody pull for me, please!
    Ready? PULL...

I'm PULLING for you Howard, you lucky guy. Two composers in one week, and the program looks terrific. Of course, you are stuck with writing to the Board ALL about the concert. (rub, rub, rub!!) Have a super time.

Whoa, that came outta nowhere. I didn't even know about this (I rarely peruse the "upcoming concerts" sections in FSM, though, since I can hardly ever go -- I look at the New York postings, no more. And you notice that the current FSM mentions Goldsmith's London concert, but not the Detroit?) Have a good one, Mr. L.

    Jeez . . . Goldsmith . . . Jarre . . . All we get here is Marvin Hamlisch . . . I can't stand it. But enjoy the concerts!

I was just now the recipient of a surprise late-night phone call from Mr. Howard L, who asked me to tell all of you:

    MISSION: ACCOMPLISHED...AND THEN SOME!!!!!

Not only did he find the concert to be highly enjoyable and totally memorable...he actually MET Maurice Jarre, shook his hand, and had a talk with him, ONE-ON-ONE!!!

I'm sure that Howard is collecting his thoughts, and will be here tomorrow to fill in all of the juicy details!

    WOW!

AwRIIIIIIIIIIGHT! Mr. L, you'd better collect yourself and your thoughts, because we are EXPECTING a report! (If I'm supposed to write up Detroit, then you're expected to write up this one.)

    NP: BASIC INSTINCT (some guy)

    That's IT Howard?
You've collected your thoughts, and that's ALL you have to tell us???

Do you have any idea how difficult it was for me to restrain myself last night? When I keyed-in your message above, I was in a particularly EVIL mood, and I very nearly added the following:

He not only MET Mr. Jarre...the two of them are at the ClearWatering Hole RIGHT NOW getting sloshed together! Howard called me from the Pub! His speech was only slightly tipsy, and he was giggling like The Joker on Batman. He put Mr. Jarre on the line to talk to me, and ol' Maurice was already three sheets to the wind. When I told him how very much I love his Enemy Mine score, he began to cry. I could hear Howard consoling him in the background, and then he fell off his barstool, which sent Maurice into a laughing fit. At that point the telephone receiver must've dropped, because I kept shouting into it with no response. But in the distance I could hear these two male voices singing "Somewhere, My Love"...the harmony was slightly off.

You know how they like their wine!
You have a happy talent for composition, and a remahrkable felicity of expression.
    Cheers, Mr. Kinsinger.
    And touche'.
(notice how my French's getting better).
