    Nevermind *the* Club release.

Just got back from the record store with a real gem: Mussorgsky-Stokowski Pictures at an Exhibition. Oliver Knussen conducts The Cleveland Orchestra.

It appears Deutsche Grammophon has been sitting its butt on this since 1995.

We mostly know Pictures at an Exhibition from the Ravel orchestration. Others have attempted it too, before and after Ravel.
    Stokowski was after.
While Ravel's piece plays more like a classical symphonic sketch, Stokowski makes the music sound much more cinematic, much more dramatic.
The same applies to the other pieces on this disc: a symphonic synthesis from Boris Godunov (which could easily play like a film score), a short excerpt from Khovantschina, and Night on Bare Mountain (as used in Fantasia where it would have been played by The Philadelphia Orchestra).

The Cleveland Orchestra is still one of the best bands in the world. They're excellent here. Sound has excessive dynamic range as calm parts are sometimes hard to hear, but then when the full force of the glorious Cleveland Orchestra hits you, it's really hard to complain about the sound.

Colin Matthews & Oliver Knussen provide some interesting liner notes.

And it makes you wonder: what else is DGG sitting on without releasing it?
Last year they released a Shostakovich 4th recorded in Philadelphia in 1994. Now a Cleveland Orchestra disc from 1995 & 1996. What else are they not releasing?

I have been waiting for this album to be released for quite a while. I have a friend who plays in the Cleveland Orchestra and he told me when they recorded this piece, knowing that it was one of my favorites.

Well, we waited and waited for it to be released, and it never was. Of course, the orchestra members never know what is going on with the recordings they make, and we just assumed it wasn't going to come out.

Odd that now, when the recording industry is in such a slump, they would finally release it. But I'm glad they did.

    Can't wait to hear it!

My dear Good King Harry Sir, sorry to make your wait even harder to bear but this disc has yet to leave my CD player since last week. I do not mean to over-hype it so that you should be disappointed when you do hear it, but it is one of the better things released in the recent past. Just hearing The Cleveland Orchestra is great. Hearing them play this music is even better.
