    Hi Fellas,

DonŽt know where to put this, so I did put it in the classical section, hope you donŽt mind.

I am starting to love the music of Miles Davis, and was wondering which cds I should get, which you think are essential. I own now the movie soundtrack (donŽt know the name in english) and Kind of blue remastered. On the way are Blue Mood and Birth of the Cool. Live around the world is on hold. So, what cdŽs can you tell me are essential Miles Davis?

    Thank you guys

    Philipp

np: kind of blue (miles davis)

Check out 'Sketches Of Spain' philipp, it really is lovely. Kind Of Blue is probably my favorite.

Though it's recognised by 'experts' as a 'ground breaking classic' I really wouldn't recommend 'Bitches Brew' which is a challenging listen of the highest order...I hate it!

I've heard plenty about his music, so a couple of weeks ago I taped "The Miles Davis Story" that was broadcasted on the Bravo Network, I still need to hear his music outside the documentary.

Philip, if I understand you correctly, you already have a Miles Davis soundtrack? Could it be the one he did for Louis Malle's first film ASCENSEUR POUR L'ECHAFAUD (LIFT TO THE SCAFFOLD)? I think that was a largely improvised score, and probably therefore much in the line of his straight jazz work which you're just getting into.

I'd also like to give the thumbs up for "Sketches of Spain", which Timmer recommended. Not a film score, but more filmic than I imagine ASCENSEUR to be, because it has a real orchestral density to it. Arranged and conducted by the great Gil Evans, this is good stuff. Including versions of Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez" and a De Falla piece, there are also some original Evans tracks at the end. His "Solea" track was later adapted brilliantly by Jerry Fielding for parts of his score for THE GAUNTLET.

SIESTA (weird film with an eclectic cast) is a good soundtrack with music by bassist Marcus Miller and prominent solos by Miles Davis. Very good, very evocative, and again there's more than a nod to "Solea" (the album is dedicated to the memory of Gil Evans).

Davis' output was so vast that it's hard to take a lucky dip with his jazz releases - it seems that later in his life he did some more experimental work which might be hard for some to get into. He also did some incursions into pop (when his brain was really scrambled)- I seem to recall that he made a guest appearance on a... Cyndi Lauper song (?), all glittery coat and dark glasses (him, not her), making the occasional toot on the trumpet.

Philippe,I'll add my 2 cents to a subject near and dear to my heart. For starters:

    Miles Ahead(Another collaboration w/Gil Evans)
    Milestones
    Cookin'
    Steamin'
    Relaxin'
    Workin'

Can't remember the title of the album Graham, but Miles did a cover of Lauper's 'Time After Time'...most likely a commercial descision.

I haven't been able to find it (to date) but Miles Davis did an album with Michel Legrand...anybody here have it, heard it, recommend it?!

I recall hearing at some point Miles's version of the Lauper tune. I did a search on Amazon and it can be found on two albums,"Love Songs" and "Your Under Arrest" IMO the stuff Miles put out in the later years wasn't represenative of anything done previously. I know there may be fans that enjoy what is called smooth jazz,a slicked down, glossy version of jazz. I think it's junk. Personally,if you want to get a real feel for the mans music, seek out any of his recordings from the 50'and 60's. And if your feeling alittle adventerous maybe check out the "Brew" album from the late 60's. A definite departure from his previous work. Great stuff, but proceed with caution.

P.S. Not to plug Amazon, but many of the selections I recommended are reviewed on Amazon. Judge for yourself.
