One of the most great composers of our time. Sadly not as wide played as he should be. My favorite pieces of course: "Tromba Lontana" and the heavy influence for THE MATRIX: "A Short Ride in a fast machine". So anyone here, what you think of Mr. John Adams?

    Best wishes

    Philipp

np: tromba lontana (john adams, city of birmingham symphony orchestra, sir simon rattle)

When I first heard Short Ride in concert, I immediately thought Matrix. But after getting the Rattle CD, I think Hamonielehre was an even stronger influence for that score. Some bits of A.I. are reminiscent of it as well.

And I can highly recommend that Rattle album.

Adams' influence on The Matrix stretches as far back as Shaker Loops in the 70's, though I would still concur with Marian that Harmonielehre had the most impact (although one could argue that because earlier Adams lead to later Adams the influence is really all the same).

As for Adams on his own, I think he is nothing less than a genius. I have yet to hear a piece by him that I haven't liked. Here's what I have:

    Shaker Loops
    Fearful Symmetries
    Harmonielehre/Chairman Dances/Tromba/Short Ride
    Century Rolls/Lollapalooza/Slonimsky's Earbox
    Naive and Sentimental Music

I really want to get his Chamber Symphony next, but I've yet to see it in any of the stores I go to.

Just discovered this man´s music. Well, until now I´ve heard the Hermionesex, loved it. I´ve heard plenty about "Nixon in China" but of course, never have a listen. Discovery just begun.

    Kirk,

I have two recordings of his chamber symphony, so email me your address and I will send you one copy.

I really don't agree about the similarity between Adam's music and the Matrix. The minimalism of course, but both differ in many ways.

I enjoy all of his works and if you really love his music, get his box set. It is worth it!

My favorite piece is THE WOUND DRESSER, based on the poem by Walt Whitman, followed by the most topical of his works, THE DEATH OF KLINGHOFFER. Both of which premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York.
