Well, thanks to Dinko, who pointed me to the right website, I was able to secure a copy of John Barbirolli conducting Ralph Vaughan-Williams' 7th Symphony on CD from EMI.Barbirolli conducted the symphony's premiere in 1953 under the supervision of RVW and recorded the symphony shortly after and there is simply no better performance of it to be found. It's not digital, it's not even stereo, but no one has come close to getting everything there is to get from this work like JB does in this version. IMHO.

Lou,you should also try "Glorious John's" version of RVW's 8th. There is a budget live version out. It's unbelievable. (If I remember right, Bennie Herrmann and RVW attended the concert) G.

Yes Dinko, it's in mono. And the recording is weak on its bass. But, and this is a big but, all the amazing difficult percussion is there and right on the money, the brass work and organ just have never been topped. And he zips through this piece in 38 minutes and yet gets all the color and feeling from the work better than people who have played it out to 46 minutes. As I said, I have a number of different versions of this: Boult, Previn, Haitink, Handley, a Naxos recording, etc. and this is the king. I suppose you could nitpick the thing and find faults but you won't match the precision this thing has when it's on.GK--I'll look into the JB 8th.

Lou, couldn't find this at all, though I have put in an order for it at my local classical shop!Out of interest, have you got British Film Music Volume 1 (GEM 0100) which has 8.40 of the original film score to Scott Of The Antartic, sound is a bit scratchy and thin but it's history! Also includes excerpts from Easdale's The Red Shoes, Bax's Oliver Twist among others. NP : (not a coincidence) 'Antartica' # 7 - RVW - Bernard Haitink

Timmer--I had to get my copy from England by ordering from www.hmv.co.uk as Dinko informed me about.I do have the Pearl CD with the tracks from Scott of the Antarctic and when you get the JB version of the Symphony, although the sound is a little "bright", I think you'll be able to compare it favorably to those tracks. Have you seen the film? You can get it cheaply on VHS and it has cues that neither the suite or the Symphony have.

Yes, being one of Britains great stories of 'Heroic failure' it's shown on TV every now and then, I also own it on VHS, good film!Looking forward to hearing the Barbirolli, love his version of the Tallis Fantasia.
