I want to know how thw world sees these composers from this side of the world. I'm from Mexico and I don't even know our composers! I know of Carlos Chavez, the founder of the National Symphony Orchestra. Silvestre Revueltas, Manuel Ponce, and others. But I've heard very little from our national masters. There's one very famous piece written by a Juan Pablo Moncayo called Huapango that is used for most every mexican holiday that it's getting a little too old, I don't know if you've heard it. It's an impressive piece, but sometimes it seems that people only know that one, and I'm a guy that usually tries to get away from the populist stuff like Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and Fur Elise. I get sick of everyone that get their hands to a piano play those notes from Fur Elise, although it made its way to popular fame, but still... anyways, getting back to the topic at hand, tell me what you guys think.

Sorry, Hector. But other than an audio tape of music performed by the John Williams guitarist, I'm totally unfamiliar with any type of latin american classical music.

Hi Hector,
I have heard of Chavez and in my opinion, he is one of the great composers of the 2oth Century. His Symphonies 1 and 2 are wonderful.
I have also enjoyed the work of Moncayo, Mabarek, Ponce, and Blas Galindo.

There are several good ones. The Chavez complete symphonies are on VOX with Mata conducting. Excellent performances and budget priced. The number is CDX5061.
There is a collection of Mexican composers on Forlane UCD 16688/16689 conducted by Lozano with Galindo, Chavez, Moncayo, Mabarak and Halffter among others.
Another Forlane set is UCD 16712/16713 with works by Jimenez and Mabarak.
There is another collection on ASV CD DCA 738 with Chavez, Ponce and Revueltas.
Hope this helps.[Message edited by mgh on 04-26-2002]

Thanks. And what about other composers, as I posted above, doesn't need to be from Mexico. I think the most famous is Heitor Villa-Lobos from Brazil, is he not?Well, I shall look fot these recordings...
