PeterK has his new poll going for soundtracks, so I thought I would pose the same question for classical listeners.I only have 19 (including the two "crossover" albums I listed underneath), but there were a number of separate recordings I pulled from my Public Library's collection as well.

::Title / Main Performer(s) / Label::
The Art of the Theremin / Clara Rockmore / Delos
Devil's Dance / Gil Shaham, Jonathan Feldman / Deutsche Grammaphon
Goldenthal: Fire Water Paper / Pacific Symphony, others / Sony Classical
Hovhaness: Mysterious Mountain / Gerard Schwarz, Seattle Symphony / Delos
The Lord of the Rings (Johan de Meij) / Ensemble Vents et Percussion de Quebec / ATMA Records
Messiaen: Turangalila Symphony / Antoni Wit, Polish Nat'l Radio Symphony / Naxos
Minimalist: Adams, Glass, Reich, Heath / Christopher Warren-Green, London Chamber Orchestra / Virgin Classics
Music from the Ether: Original Works for Theremin / Lydia Kavina / Mode Records
Piano Dance: A 20th Century Portrait / Gloria Cheng / Telarc
Reel Life: The Private Music of Film Composers, vol. 1 / Music Amici / Arabesque
Saint-Saens: Organ Symphony / Lorin Maazel, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra / Sony Classical (avoid this one like the plague)
Saint-Saens: Symphony No. 3 ("Essential Classics" series) / Eugene Ormandy, Philadelphia Orchestra, others / Sony Classical
Simplicity / The D'Amore Duo / Sonora
3 Friends: Music of Ian Krouse and Bruce Broughton / The Debussy Trio / RCM
Velvet / Velvet Brown / Crystal Records
Wagner: Overtures and choruses / Sir Georg Solti / Penguin Classics (London)
Wagner: Overtures and preludes / various / Deutsche Grammaphon
::"Classical Crossover" Albums::Anne Dudley: Ancient & Modern
Anne Dudley: A Different Light
What does "classical crossover" really mean, anyway?Kirk

I have no idea what I bought in 2001. Anyway, I'll just mention that the best thing I did was get into the music of Samuel Barber. You may know him from the ultra-famous "Adagio for Strings", but he's no one-work composer. His other works are just as good.

I haven't counted, but I would estimate around 5-15.

I really should start making a list. Probably around 20, perhaps 30.

If Peter is back from holiday tomorrow, I plan to ask him in the MM.com chat if he could stock Fire Water Paper, since I also want it (plus some other stuff Peter does have in stock).

Kyriacos,I came upon it purely by chance at my local Tower Records. It was marked down $10. I believe it's recently out of print, so I'm not sure where to find it. If you have a Tower Records nearby, check with them, I suppose. As for online venues, Amazon.com apparently has a used copy available. Other than that, I don't know.

I have no idea how many I've bought this year...probably 20 or so at a guess? and that doesn't include any trades!Rather than mention them all I'll just say what I enjoyed most which were...
Gergiev's FIREBIRD - Stravinsky
Karajan's PINES/FOUNTAINS OF ROME - Resphigi
Hickox's LONDON SYMPHONY - Vaughan Williams....if you don't have this yet...WHY?
Karajan's PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION - Mussorgsky
...there's more, but that's what really sticks in my memory!
