Sir Respighi is one of my favorite composers and I collect different versions of the Roman Trilogy symphonic poems. Now if you want the very best version of each piece these are IT : the most magnificent Pines of Rome is without a doubt Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic on DG. It has the greatest electrifying Appian Way its just glorious. This cd also has the most beautiful delicate strings and woodwinds. Karajan' version of the Fountains of Rome is pure rapture and loveleness, just superb. The best Roman Festivals is hands down Mazell/Cleveland Orchestra on London/Decca. It is a volacanic performance with audiophile sound a real classic recording. Now if you are looking for a cd with all three tone poems than the one to get is Tortelier/Philharmonia Orchestra on Chandos. All performances are superior to any others that have all 3 on one disc. The Sonics are of course first rate, its Chandos.Tortelier's Fountains has the most powerful Trevi Fountain by far, the organ blasts out in triumph that is hairaising. His Pines is second to Karajan, but those Berlin trombones and french horns just will never be beaten in pure golden tone, they are just too damn fantastic. These I promise, are the best of the best. Stay away from the Muti, and the Dutiot they are just limp and aweful. The classic Reiner/Chicago is worth a listen and it has its moments. The Gatti on Teldec is just ok not enough passion and the recording is good but distant. Anyhow get the Karajan for the Pines and the Tortelier on Chandos- it will blow away that Naxos cd. And closing hey Marian you don't have Respighi? What's up man? Respighi Rules. Get the Roman Trilogy, Belkis Queen of Sheba and Church Windows, go for it!

There a ton of great recordings of the Roman Trilogy.I have a performance on a re-issue by RCA. one of those with the godawful red covers.
I don't have the disc with me, and sadly, I cannot remember who is doing it, but it's a fiery performance.
try the Gramophone website. I'm sure they have a smattering of reviews. it's a hard search engine to navigate through though.

They improved the design recently, but what really disappoints me is that all the information about other comparable recordings are gone.NP: Harry Potter!
