Is there a better term than 'mystical'? I mean slow, often hymn-like music that connects emotionally. Here's some music in this catagory that I really like:
Barber: Adagio for Strings
Vaughan Williams: Fantasy on a theme by Thomas Tallis
Hovhaness: Mysterious MountainDo you like this sort of music? What are your favorites?

One of my favourite "types" of music. I immediately thought of Mysterious Mountain myself, though I kick myself for forgetting the Tallis fantasia (note to Timmer: Kick me next time I'm in the UK).Add Anton Bruckner, most of his works.

NP: William Walton: Cappricio burlesco (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Sir Charles Groves)

There are some very good works along these lines.
Rautavaara: Sym No. 5
Korndorf: Hymn II and III
Danielpour: Celestial Night/Toward the Splendid City
Picker: Old and Lost Rivers
Harrison: Largo Ostinato (Sym No.3)
Harrison: Elegy to the Memory of Calvin Simmons
Truscott: Elegy for String Orchestra
Jarre: Building the Barn (Witness)
Bruckner: Adagio from Sym No. 8[Message edited by mgh on 07-05-2001]

What about RVW's Sinfonia antartica, or Holst's Neptune, the Mystic. Also, Wagner's Lohengrin overture has a very mystic quality, and I always felt that the opening of Richard Strauss' Aus Italien sounds like space music.NP: Ralph Vaughan Williams: Sinfonia antartica (LPO, Sir Adrian Boult)

Mystical music? Is that music written by mystics or music that is supposed to envoke a mystical response in the listener? Maybe spiritual music would be a better term.Or maybe otherworldly music. Ok then there are sooooo many pieces to list but I will name just some of the best. 1.SZYMANOWSKI; Symphony no.3{song of the night},King Roger.Demeter,Sabat Mater 2.SIBELIUS; Tapiola,The Swan of Tuonela 3.HOVHANESS: Symphony no.11,Fra Angelico,Celestial Gate,Eilbris 4.HOLST;The Cloud Messenger,Hymns of the Rig Veda 5.RAUTAVAARA: Angels and Vistations,Cantus Articus, All the symphonies. 6.LANGGAARD; This guy's music is super mystical sounding!! Check out all the symphonies. 7.VAUGHAN-WILLIAMS;The Lark Ascending. Very spiritual and super beautiful. 8.IVES;The Unaanwered Question.

mystical?Top me that implies religion:
John Tavener
Arvo Partfor starters.
also try Olivier Messiaen. Hard to digest, his stuff, but ultimately rewarding I think.
Might also try chant.

I agree with most of the above (yes Marian, consider yourself kicked
) but where's mention of Debussy and Ravel?

And also parts of Mahler's 2nd symphony. "Mystic" music is closely connected with what I consider haunting music, meaning that once I play it, I often can't stop playing it over and over again for days.NP: Robin Hood (Michael Kamen)

The only mystical sounding piece of Debussy that comes to mind is The Engulfed Cathedral.Of course the orchestrated version by Stokowski. The Philharmonia/Simon on Cala Records is awesome, the best ever.
