She was sassy and irreverent, blunt, sharp, always brutally honest -- especially with and about herself -- and her on-screen characters couldn't, or wouldn't, be any different. So, as Katharine Hepburn, who died today at the age of 96 at her home in Old Saybrook, Conn., might have commented herself, when people half your age who don't stand to inherit anything from you except hopefully fond memories begin to wonder if you're going to outlive them, it's probably time to go...

I was fortunate to have been introduced to Miss Hepburn in 1980 through mutual family friends. I was in total awe of her with my heart pounding and at a loss of words. This was a moment in a life not soon forgotten.Miss Hepburn put me totally at ease and asked me how I was doing, and thought it was nice that I was studying English and film at a Jesuit college.

Great intelligence, class, grace, beauty and above all limitless talent. She absorbed her
roles to give us memorable performances. I shall miss her one-of-a-kindness.
