Just saw this, too. Great screen actor, fantastic man. We're lucky he was in so many great films, so many great roles.

Last week on TV there was a special on the best Hollywood portrayals of heroes and villains.Number one villain: Hannibal Lector
Number one hero was a surprise. It wasn't superman or Indiana Jones. It was the courageous and dignified Atticus Finch so wonderfully portrayed by Gregory Peck. His legacy lives on.

Damn, that's sad news. That makes two announcements like that today, the previous being David Brinkley (see my post in the Junkyard).
I had just watched Twelve O'Clock High the other day. Sorry to hear the news.

Sad news indeed even at such a good age as 87. Gregory Peck has always been a favourite screen star of many people, including myself, over the past 60 years and was one of the few real gentleman left in Hollywood. He will live on forever in his movies my favourites of which are...Spellbound, The Yearling, Roman Holiday, Cape Fear, Arabesque, The Omen, The Boys from Brazil.Gae

I can't begin to say how sad I am. I recently watched Roman Holiday, Spellbound, and To Kill a Mockingbird, becoming an instant fan of his. And with his role as Atticus Finch named the greatest film hero of all-time, I feel as if we've lost one of the greatest heroes of our time. Goodbye Mr. Peck and thank you for all the great years of wonderful films.NP-To Kill A Mockingbird

As I said on the Soundtrack Board, I never met the man, but surely wanted to. I more than enjoyed his work, but it was his commitment to social causes that I admired.I was surprised when the AFI poll chose Atticus Finch as the all-time movie hero (those AFI polls are truly moronic, this coming from a graduate of AFI's Conservatory), but greatly pleased that it wasn't Indiana Jones or even Robin Hood.
There are, of course, no analogues for the Indiana Joneses and Robin Hoods and Rambos. They've never walked the earth, and never will.
By contrast, the world is full of Atticus Finches, for whom we may all be grateful. Some people are even lucky enough to have one or two in their own immediate families...

AHAB.And the whale he pursued was not so morose or depressed that he was ever called "Mopy Dick."

Rest In Peace, Gregory Peck. Yes, I too think he was a great actor. Some have claimed that he was too stolid, but I'd get rid of the "t" in that adjective and just call him solid. Solid as a rock, and oozing integrity and humanity. He may not have had the range of those other upstanding citizens Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart, but he could be absolutely hypnotic nonetheless. Sheer screen presence.
