I usually sit through the short film categories feeling interested but distant, cos I know that I'll probably never see any of them.

Do you think these Pixar shorts keep winning just because they're spliced with the Pixar feature films, and so people automatically go for that? I liked "For the Birds" but it wasn't near as good as the last Pixar winner: "Geri's Game" - I'm curious to see what the other 4 nominees were like, and whether they would have won if everyone who went to see Monsters Inc. got to see them....

Camillu, a committee is formed that is required to watch all the short films. Only when they sign their names in blood attesting that they saw all five can they vote. So it's not necessarily a popularity contest for the voters, just us in the multiplexes.

    Jeffy,

I believe that it's required to have seen the films to NOMINATE them.... but the "general Academy population" votes on EVERYTHING - whether they've seen them or not.

Well, For the Birds was perhaps the funniest short I've EVER seen. It certainly deserves the award.

I agree, Marian. It was funny as heck. More shorts and less trailers need be shown in front of features.

I too thought For the Birds was a work of genius, I'd seen only three of the best short nominees however (Birds included) so it's hard to judge in regard to it's oscar win.

It should be noted that 'For the Birds' did circulate at a number of festivals before appearing before Monsters Inc.

Agree - damn funny short film, and it deserved what it got. I think we should keep the trailers in front of features, but drop the commercials!! Urgh... I don't need to see a Pepsi commercial at a movie theater that only sells Coke...

Just here to voice my opinion that I thought the film was hilarious. It's only the second short I've seen other that the Pixar one with the lamp. I liked that one too, I have a thing for non-human stuff that can talk, etc. Kinda like the Brave Little Toaster...

I thought it was a great short. I can't judge though, cause I've never seen the others.

I will say that as far as pixar winning, and as for technical merit and all, I would think Pixar has more resources at it's disposal to make a better short. I mean, it's pixar, then Lucasfilm for sound and so on. Not that having better resources means it is better, but it can't hurt. However, For The Birds was just funny as hell.

That's the great thing about Pixar shorts: They're always state of the art technically, but it's not important, because the story is all it's really about.

As always, you're right, Dan....sort of. A committee votes for Foreign Language Film, the documentaries and the shorts. But everything else is voted on by the entire membership.

For The Birds is the best Chuck Jones homage I have seen in a while (second would be the sequences from Ice Age starring Scrat and third would be the scenes in Roger Rabbit where Bob Hoskins is chasing the evil 'toon through Toontown). That could be the other reason why it won. Chuck passed away around the time voting was to be completed.

    Nicely put, Daniel-san.

    1. I love going out to the movies (Who doesn't?), but if I have to see that g--damn Fandango.com ad one more time, I'm liable to:
    a. Scream bloody murder.

    and/or

    b. Physically hurt somebody.

Hopefully, it won't come to that.

    2. Add me to the list of people who loved "For the Birds". I also enjoyed its music score; does anyone know who did it?
