Ugh. Like I said on another thread, they should rename it: Indiana Jones and the Time Machine. Or maybe: Beyond the Planet of the Apes.

Well, it looks like they're aiming for another "Mummy Returns." When I first heard of this remake I thought, "Great!" Although I think highly of George Pal's original film, I thought that this was a chance to aid some of the mistakes Pal made and create a very true adaptation of Wells story. Boy was I wrong...it seems there are some elements present but it actually looks to be somewhat of a departure from the original book. When standing next to the film I saw in the trailer (which looks like it's borrowing alot of elements from recent adventure/fantasy films), Pal's film looks like a masterpeice.
It looks like nothing new. Too bad.

We're on the same page, it seems. I really agree with you on the similarities to recent action/sci-fi films, especially Planet of the Apes. Substitute Morlocks for Apes, and Guy Pierce for Mark Wahlberg, and it looks like the same movie. The only difference is that Pierce is a much better actor than Wahlberg.

What's even more disheartening is that I was also hoping this would boost my confidence in John Logan as a writer for Star Trek X. I will reserve my final judgement until the film has come out and I've actually seen the thing, but I can no longer say I'm looking forward to it.
