Match the film(late '50s through mid '60s) with content and star:

    1. Poor White Trash
    2. I Hate Your Guts
    3. White Comanche
    4. Five
    5. Beach Red
    6. The Outrage

    A. this film starred Paul Newman, Lawrence Harvey and an all star cast including William Shatner and Edward G. Robinson. It gives several versions of the story told by the participants and other so-called witnesses.

    B. Peter Graves tries to help a girl who is abused by her father and raped by a maniac

    C. William Shatner in this also, a bad makeup job and has a wig on

    D. Shatner plays the devil in this one

    E. Cornel Wilde's acting is horrible in this film featuring flashbacks and frontal nudity, one of first major films to show this, and a needle being injected into his arm

    F. Survivors of atomic war, William Phipps starred, all were protected from the blast in one way or another.

    Good luck, John.

Haven't seen any of those, John, though they sound fascinating! But I'll have a shot:

I think that FIVE was about the aftermath of a nuclear war. BEACH RED I think had Cornel Wilde in it, but the frontal nudity clue doesn't ring true. Was The Paul Newman one THE OUTRAGE? No, this is really a shot in the dark (music by Henry Mancini)... all those great Bill Shatner roles?

    Bah, in short:

    1 D
    2 B
    3 C
    4 F
    5 E
    6 A

Graham, you did real well this one. You got four of them correct on first try. Excellent!!!

Beach Red, very controversial and very poor film about a real battle in WWII that was so bad it was laughable. It took a lot of criticism from churches and other groups for the nudity in it. Rip Torn is the only standout in the film as the tough sergeant. Rest of cast is horrible. Many of the scenes are are really funny such as the guy upset about one of the Marines crushing a beetle on the landing craft, he yells at him "You murderer!!!" and when he gets to shore his arm is blown off and gets up and starts walking. REally funny.

    I Hate Your Guts
and Poor White Trash are switched. Shatner is the devil in the South stirring up racial hatred. In Poor, Peter Graves comes to the Bayou and meets a girl who is raped by a crazy Cajun in one of the most bizarre scenes ever filmed. Really funny and shocking at the same time. The film bombed n its first release in 1957, but on its second issue in 1961 made the drive-in rounds and did fairly well.
Good job. Two gold stars. JW.

I went to Outrage because I'm a Paul Newman fan. One of his worst movies, IMHO. Still, it was a take off or imitation of the much better Japanese film Rashomon (sp). I haven't seen the others on the list.

Congrats Graham, you smart guy you!

I'm surprised, John and Joan, that that The Outrage seems to be so negatively perceived by you! You're probably right (I haven't seen it), but wasn't it directed by the usually at least professional Martin Ritt and had a score by Alex North? Tell us why it's so bad!

And John, is that Shatner film where he stirs up racist hatred the Corman one more commonly known as The Intruder? If it is, I've read some good things about that too (saying that it did well within its miniscule budget etc). What's wrong with THAT one?

Graham, I like the Outrage personally. I did not criticize it myself. The "I Hate Your Guts" movie might have been renamed. It was interesting and not bad for a low budget film. The really bad ones are the others on the list. Beach Red is really awful.

I put those on there because they are you out of the ordinary type films. John.

I didn't realize Outrage had such impressive credentials. I saw it a billion years ago, and I remember leaving and thinking that Newman was woefully miscast as a Mexican bandit with a thick accent. It wouldn't hurt me to find it on video and view it again with a little bit more mature perspective.

Been a bad month for movie rentals so far.

Rented Swordfish with Travolta and H. Jackman. First 5 minutes presented
literate dialogue and an interesting premise, and I thought maybe it would be a
winner. It then segued into over the top action and violence that permeates
so many movies today without an original perspective. The plot seemed
contrived. If you want to know about skilled computer hackers who are
dangerous, read Deaver’s The Blue Nowhere, a taut, suspenseful novel that
is impossible to put down and avoid Swordfish.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Bleecckk. Glad I didn’t pay theater prices
to see Carrey overact. The script was inane. I usually like Ron Howard films,
but this one only sported interesting sets and costumes.

Spy Games. Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. This one at least held my attention.
Because it is done is flashbacks, the incidents portrayed lacked the
suspenseful edge that “not knowing” gives the audience. Redford was truly
wonderful as a CIA agent who seems real and never seems to be “acting.”
The plot has enough twists to keep you guessing.
Really strange score by H-G-Williams. A lot of synth techno drumming that
drove me NUTS. Then he’d write Chinese and Arabic music. Then rather
haunting, sad, attractive themes. The score was a mishmash of many styles and
    themes.

Joan, if you ever see The Outrage again from a "more mature perspective", don't be surprised if it's still crap! As I mentioned, I haven't seen it so I can't comment, but I'm sure we can all think of plenty of films with good credentials which just fell flat on their faces.

John, I did a bit of research. I Hate Your Guts was the re-release title of The Intruder (in Britain, The Stranger). It's the one I was thinking about. Directed by Corman at the beginning of his best period (roughly 1960 to 65), and with a script by Charles Beaumont, this sounds quite intriguing.

From the lood and feel of the film I would say '61 or '62. John.
