A.I.
Done by Spielberg
**/****Amazing visuals and many other great things, all only to be ruined with the usual Spielberg trademark of making everything fit in a nice comfortable golden box in the end. 1st half was amazing and it all felt like Kubrick. 2d half was bad and all felt like usual no thinking involved, manipulative Spielberg. Could have been great, the 1st half was.
score
**.8/****
Different for Williams but his kiddish parts ruined what could have been dark and interesting moments(like the scenes throughout the 1st half). Good score overall though with some great moments.
I wanted to love this film but my brain was bored out of it's mind! So simple. So obvious. So schmaltzy. So Spielberg.Worth seeing but turn off your brain.

Sexy Beast
directed by Glazer and starring Ben Kingsley***/****
The plot is nothing special. It has been done many times over. The characters are something truly special though, and Ben Kingsley proves himself a GREAT actor because of this film.
WHAT A DEPARTURE FOR GANDHI! He went from the idol of peace to the #1 psycho/evil being/freaky maniac with a huge and explosive temper! The closest thing to Kinglsey's performance in Sexy Beast is Hopper in Blue Velvet. Kingsley is better I think, but both are amazingly scary and explosive.
This film is worth full price JUST to see Kinglsey as a complete and utter psycho. Although he is not in the film all the way through, his presence is, and the audience never forgets it.
Amazing performance, scary actually! Not the I WAS BEATEN AS A CHILD or I AM POSSESED bullcrap, but just a flat out explosive and nuts person done to perfection.
The film is rather good if not looked as a crime film, or just another brit gangster film for it is not truly a film about crime.
" There is a bit of the beast in all of us."

Kingsley, you rock and I am scared of you now.

Dersu Uzala
done by KUROSAWA****/****
This is a different film for Kurosawa. It is simple yet amazing. Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Man, and an amazing character(Dersu). A long and beautifully shot/subtle film that is the best, of the films I have seen, to show nature vs. city life and how it is unhealthy to live in city even if dangerous in wild. I think. It is also a great film about male bonding. I hate to use that word but if a woman wants to know how we men think and how we react to each other, that person might want to check out this film. It covers many subjects and nails all of them. Not to mention some breathtaking camera/nature shots that I have never seen before.

Latest DVD rentals.The Claim
Loosely based on the Hardy’s Mayor of Castorbridge, this is suppose
to be a rather “arty” film. It utilizes an interesting, thematic, very non western
underscore by M. Nyman. A man, once desperate for gold, gave away
his wife and daughter for a stake. They come back 19 years later
to the town he founded. The movie sports beautiful scenery and engaging
music, but that is about all. It is VERY slow and dull.Save The Last Dance
Another “been there, seen it before” movie. If you’ve seen Flashdance
or Billy Elliott (which was at least interesting), you’ve seen this movie.
Will she dance again? Will she get into Juliard? You know the answers.
This is just an updated, hip hop version of what we’ve seen before. At the theater, I saw Dogs and Cats. This could make you a cat hater.
This is really a children’s movie. I found it cute and funny at first but rather
insipid during the last half. Debney’s score is huge, thematic, and lots of fun.Hey, Kross, there are tons of films on male bonding. Nothing wrong with those words nor that theme. I wish we had more movies on female bonding. I.E. Thelma and Louise, Boys On the Side, etc. Both types of films portraying bonding themes give us insight into female/male psyche.

I was also let down with the Claim but it had good moments. Worth renting? Yes. Best of the year? No.

True joan, but I just found many truths in Dersu Uzala that I have not seen in other films. I agree about your statement though. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH FILMS with women as main characters period! What we need are great films, usually ones centered around males, to be opposite of course and be female centered. Although I would not truly like to see more crappy love stories, I want to see haunting films that are lead by women. Just my take.

Red Beard
by Akira Kurosawa****/****
Although long, this film about human compassion is (IMO) one of the best films ever made. This is also one of the best films about human compassion and what humans are capable of that I have seen. Toshiro Mifune is flat out the man, and he is now my favorite actor after seeing him in many films, and ESPECIALLY this one. He is so good, so subtle, so good. Although he is not the main character, rather a young apprentice is(and his transformation from selfish to compassionate is the main plot) he is a main character, but not the main one. Still, his presence is very strong. I loved this amazing film, and I will never forget it. A film everyone should see. (The score to the film was also very good and it fit fine!)

Just an hour ago (it's one hour 'til midnight here in Finland) I finally saw YOU'VE GOT MAIL and I fell in love with Meg Ryan. Because I've been hooked now for over a week to Movie Music com, I REALLY wanted to rent this on video - and I really laughed and enjoyed the movie, while discovering myself in Meg Ryan's character... not in Tom Hanks'
Hey Joan, you mentioned THELMA & LOUISE - when it premiered in Helsinki, I was probably the only male viewer in movie theatre filled with women who cheered enormously during the highlights... and I cheered with them, sincerelly - but I always kept thinking of what COULD have happened IF I hadn't cheered..!

Ok, so I was a little late on seeing this, but I finally saw Requiem for a Dream. Ellen Burstyn was robbed! That movie was unsettling, to say the least. I felt so sick after watching it...anyone else see it and feel the same way?posted 08-22-2001 08:20 PM PT (US)

I still cannot get the images of her out of my head! Oh, the heartbreak. I can't imagine anyone not being affected by this movie. Kinda of like ONCE WERE WARRIORS.
As far as the editing goes, it looked pretty good to me. Did you see PI?

There is the original(theatrical) cut, they call it the director's cut. Then there is the edited version that most all major rental stores rent out. The edited version doesn't have the final "party" and many of the getting high scenes are cut down. I have seen the edited version, and I own the original. The edited version does not leave the same impression so I was just making sure you saw the non-edited one.I love RFAD. It is one of my fav books and fav films. I can watch it anytime since I have gotten over that emotional attack. It took me around 3 months to get over the initial impact, especially after reading the beautiful book.

I know exactly what you are talking about now (I was wondering if there was an additional cut). Had I seen the "edited for television" card at the head of the movie, I would have popped it out. My friend said she rented from Blockbuster and that it was edited. Ugh...what is the point.
Anyhow, I maintain that Burstyn was robbed of an Oscar!
