First of all, for anyone who likes this film (like I do), you MUST get this new DVD. It has tons of concept art and storyboards, commentary from the director and cinematographer, and a great documentary. For people who both love this film and are big fans of Tim Burton, this DVD is also a must-have. Not only does it have all the things I mentioned above, but it also contains two wonderful early films of Tim Burton - Vincent and Frankenweenie. Now I know the latter was released on video at some point, but I'm not sure about the former. Still, it's great to see both of these films.
For those who don't know about them, Vincent is a 5-minute stop-motion animated film about a boy (Vincent Malloy) who wants to be like Vincent Price (who narrates the film). It goes back and forth between the real world and his dark, twisted daydreams. Lots of fun.
Frankenweenie is about a boy (Victor Frankenstein) who resurrects his dead dog. Although it is macabre at times, it is actually quite sweet, and it is really neat to see how the art and set design reflect what Burton is doing now. It also has a wonderful score by Michael Corventino and David Newman.
Die-hard Burton fans will already have seen both of these, of course, but for someone (like me) who has not gone to the trouble of tracking these down, it is great to have them on this release.
Once again, this is a great DVD that any and every Tim Burton/Nightmare fan should get. The only thing it's missing is an isolated music track.
