La Luna (Italy, 1979)Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci
Screenplay by Giuseppe and Bernardo Bertolucci, and Clare Peploe
Photography by Vittorio StoraroMain Cast: Jill Clayburgh, Matthew Barry
A moody teenager's father dies, and he goes off to live in Italy with his opera singing mum, where he gets into drugs and nearly has sex with her.
At least I THINK that was the story. At about the two hour mark this got the fast forward treatment. I obviously missed the point, because they say that Bertolucci is great, but for me this was a terrible bore, despite the synopsis. And the characters are phonier than in an afternoon family-crisis-of-the-week TV movie. And the acting is absurdly method and alienating.
So there.

Well I watched Innerspace on TV today, which was kinda kewl as I'd not seeing it in years. Goldsmith score, as expected from a Joe Dante movie...A good solid ***/****

Ran
dir: Akira Kurosawa
4/4I am amazed by this movie. Everything is brilliant: the writing, acting, cinemetography, the score, etc. It's been described as a loose adaptation of King Lear. The tragedy of an old king who has been at war all his life and only now decides to make peace and split the ownership of the country to his sons (however, his first son has full authority and the third is banished because he finds fault in the king's wishes). His sons thirst for power and send the king lower down the hierarchy until he too is banished and wanders the barren land of the kingdom while his sons war for more power and land. It's sad that this is in limited release, it's a supurb movie that should be seen in more theatres.
And subtitles are the best and only way for foriegn films. Thankfully, Ran employs subtitles, letting us hear the wonderful acting.

"THE THREE KINGS" (George Clooney) The video shop attendant said it was a mindless action movie and I almost didnt get it....but I ignored him and watched the movie and I'm glad I did! The most interesting aspect of the film was the amazing cinematography and use of camera effects for dramatic effect e.g. when Barlow is shot and struggling to breath ( we see from his perspective..e.g. distorted images of Clooney and Ice Cube and also the sound drops out to simulate his weakening health...eerie stuff!! ....very creative and a nice change from the usual Hollywood blockbuster. The story also gripped me from start to finish and there was enough clever play on the political situation in Iraq to rate it well above the usual action flick. Strong performances all round also...the "torture" scene was especially gripping and and terrifying at the same time. Overall an enjoyable, well-crafted movie which I would rate as *** out of **** Gae

LAKE PLACID........You know, I was looking forward more to this film than any other release recently, being a fan of Horror/Monster flicks etc. For this reason my disappointment was even stronger than if this had been any other movie. Dont get me wrong..I enjoyed the movie for the first hour or so, it had e few laughs, good effects and plenty of nice references to other movies in the same genre and then the crocodile got caught and I'm thinking "Hey this is starting to get good now...lets see what happens from here"...and then guess what?? The bloody film finishes!! Yep, 75 lousy mins into the movie it ends just when things are starting to get interesting. What happened? Did they run out of money, ideas, what? In a day and age where so often we sit through two and a half hour long movies which would benefit from being cut back by half an hour, Lake Placid ends at least half an hour too soon. I feel that I was ripped off and didnt get my value for money. Does that sound stingy? I mean when we see a movie like Jurassic Park/ Lost World etc which has four or five major climactic scenes spread over the movie is it too much to ask that Lake Placid could have done with at least two or three more big scenes in a further half hour e.g. the croc escapes, goes on the rampage etc and is caught/killed in an unexpected way!! I want my money back!!

FLASH GORDON!!!!!!It aired here on Foxtel's channel Arena on friday night, part of their Graveyard Shift segment, where they show heaps of old horror and science fiction films.
I must say, from what I've watched so far, it's hilariously over acted and great fun to watch. And it was shown in widescreen too!
More on what I think of it when I watch it all.

Well, I watched it all on Sunday afternoon.I really enjoyed the movie, and the ending was very true to original Flash Gordon serials back in the 40's or whenever they were.
Brian Blessed as usual was the most over the top actor, although Topol as Zarkov was believably bad in places. Max Van Sydow made a great Ming.
Of course, being a big Queen fan, you can just hear the lines used in their song used as the main theme.
All in all, a great fun film, to kill 2 hours of your day.

Just saw "Almost Famous". A great flick, and highly recommended for music fans.Flash Gordon is an awesome movie! You neglected to mention the worst actor to hit the big screen: Timothy Dalton AKA James Bond, who played Prince Baron, who is also the lover of Ming's daughter (hubba, hubba)
Oh yeah. The widescreen version is also available on DVD if you want it for keeps.

Actually, I find Timothy Dalton a good actor! He was very underused as Bond.It was shown with no ads, so I'll keep it on video. (No DVD Player at all)

Saw ALMOST FAMOUS and really enjoyed it. It’s a thinking
person’s movie. Many themes explored. Initiation into manhood,
the death of rock and roll (or maybe the movement from excellence in
rock to mediocrity), an exploration of the vapid or rather insipid
world of shallow rock artists, and a commentary on the culture of
the early seventies as reflected in its music. Frances McDormand was
the ultimate super mom; all the rest of the cast was equally excellent,
especially Philip Seymour Hoffman. His final dialogue is magnificent and prophetic.
.Watched MEET THE PARENTS. Perhaps my humor button was turned
to off, but I barely cracked a smile. I didn’t find Stiller’s victimization and
shame at the hands of DeNiro particularly funny. I found it pathetic.NP Heavy Metal, Bernstein

I saw The Cell today.I thought it was...sort of quite good! Maybe a real actress instead of Jennifer Lopez would have been a better idea for the lead, because her presence only trivialized what was dangerously close at times to being a pop video without pop music.
But that very pop video look was definitely striking, and even audacious for mainstream Hollywood when it came to the scarier scenes.
I'd read a bit about Howard Shore's score before I saw the film, and though it didn't seem quite as innovative as I was led to believe, it was undoubtedly effective.
Go see The Cell and tell me if I'm in the minority. It seems that people either love it or hate it. I'm in the middle!

Last night, I saw (deep breath) SHRIEK IF YOU KNOW WHAT I DID LAST FRIDAY THE 13TH. Not quite as gross as SCARY MOVIE, but just as funny. Tyler Bates's score was terrific, with some great (synth?) choral work. Wouldn't it be great if they released this on a double bill with David Kitay's score from SM? ****/***** for film & score.NP - Queen - Greatest Hits *****/*****

Well, Saturday night, THE THIN RED LINE had it's first showing on Showtime on Foxtel here in Oz.Interesting film. Kinda slow in pacing in parts, especially the nice long 1 hour battle to take the hill! I found it had more of an impact than SAVING PRIVATE RYAN had on me and a GREAT score by Hans Zimmer (which I do own the release of).
Some marvellous cinematorgraphy really brought out the locations used for filming. The voice overs were kind of strange to understand at times as they were too quiet (even through a really good stereo system turned up quite loud).
I unintentionally laughed when Woody Harrelson's blew his backside off with the grenade. The scene when they took the Japanese base with only music and quiet sound effects really was the highlight of the film, just seeing how skinny they were.
I will be watching it again, as I taped it, as a friend is coming around on the weekend to watch it, so I may be able to pick up some more from it. Definately requires several viewings.

I hadn't heard of SHRIEK IF YOU KNOW WHAT I DID LAST FRIDAY THE 13TH, but the title is remarkably similar to the working title for SCARY MOVIE, which was SCREAM IF YOU KNOW WHAT I DID LAST HALLOWEEN.I haven't seen much of anything this month. I saw FIGHT CLUB again, on DVD complete with commentary and outtakes, and weird little in-jokes -- that DVD's a gift that keeps on giving (it was a borrowed copy, though, now returned.) Saw THREE KINGS again and respected it somewhat more than I had at first glance. Am dying to see the new EXORCIST, probably will tomorrow.

The Exorcist (USA 1973/2000)Directed by William Friedkin
Screenplay by William Peter Blatty, from his novel
Photography by Owen Roizman
Music by Jack Nitzsche and others
Main Cast: Ellen Burstyn, Max Von Sydow, Jason Miller, Linda Blair, Lee J. CobbA twelve year old is possessed by the devil.
I've never liked The Exorcist, but I went to give the new revamped version a try. Didn't like it either. The Oscar-winning script, for all its attempts at delving into philosophy and theology, completely fails to create any dramatic tension. Grim, ugly and boring, The Exorcist is one of the least entertaining horror movies I have ever seen.

Oh, I forgot, the added scene of the spiderwalk down the stairs in The Exorcist is bloody well scary as hell! I loved that scene! Still think the rest of the film is poor.American Psycho (USA 2000)
Directed by Mary Harron
Screenplay by Mary Harron and Guinevere Turner, from the novel by Bret Easton Ellis
Photography by Andrzej Sekula
Music by John Cale
Main Cast: Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Chloe SevignyTerrible vacuous yuppie kills people, maybe.
I must admit that I know nothing about the original novel, but as a film this is richly detailed, multi layered, shocking, disconcerting, evil and wickedly funny.
Dissertations will be written about this film, and if not, it will at least provoke discussions. John Cale's generally fine score seems to nod in the direction of Herrmann's Psycho, and with the macabre humour of the film and a protagonist called nearly Bates, well...
But the Hitchcockian undertones are very much by the way. I don't even know if they are intentional, but whether they are or not, they are only a small part of a wonderful whole, which, if not a masterpiece, is certainly one of the most interesting and unclassifiable pieces of cinema I've seen in a while.

Legend of Drunken Master
3 1/2 of 4Perhaps one of the best movies of the year! I haven't seen many of Jackie Chan's films, and those that I have seen are a couple that I caught on the movie or cable channels. When I heard there was a re-release of one of Chan's movies, I lept to see it, being far impressed with Chan's stunts and amazing fights scenes.
The plot is fairly simple: Chan is accidently gets caught up in a battle between foriegners who want to export Chinese artifacts for a museum and those who want the artifacts to stay in China. Chan's character was taught in the style of "drunken boxing", a style of fighting that aims to mimic the looseness and numbness to pain of a drunk (believe me, it's far more impressive and effective than I make it sound when you see the fighting style in action). The fight sequences are simply amazing. Drunken Master is both a great action movie and comedy. I fully recommmend it to anyone.posted 10-23-2000 09:00 PM PT (US)

The Tomb Of Ligeia (GB 1964)Directed by Roger Corman
Screenplay by Robert Towne, from the story by Edgar Allan Poe
Photography by Arthur Grant
Music by Kenneth V. JonesMain Cast: Vincent Price, Elizabeth Shepherd, John Westbrook
Verden Fell is obsessed by the memory of his dead wife, and getting a new one doesn't help matters.
Absolutely marvelous Corman/Price/Poe film, the last in the series, and one of the few made in England, which gives it an entirely different look from the earlier ones. Tomb Of Ligeia really is a masterpiece, a bizarre, thematically rich gem of a movie, distinguished by a splendidly interesting script from Robert Towne (Chinatown), and fine performances from Price and the tremendous Elizabeth Shepherd.
Kenneth V. Jones provided a score which is nearly as good as the Les Baxter or Ronald Stein ones, and I hope Percepto Records get around to putting it out.
Tomb Of Ligeia! That's one for film school classes!
