    I need y'all's help.

I've got a three-year-old who's fascinated with astronauts. I've been trying to find some good movies/videos that he would enjoy watching.

He's way too young for THE RIGHT STUFF and APPOLLO 13. I've heard good things about Tom Hank's FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON. As the episodes are in eaily digestible 1-hour segments, I may not have to worry about the fidget factor.

My main worries are the language issues. The tapes are listed as "Not Rated" so I don't know if the langauge is G, PG, R, whatever.

Would anyone who has seen this series please let me know? I don't want my three-year-old walking around cussing like a sailor. The grandparents would not be pleased.

    Thanks in advance . . .

    Marc

It is an excellent mini-series and I recommend it highly.

Also, since it's a Tom hanks vehicle, it's low on the swearing stuff. I haven't watched it for a few months (got it on DVD) but I can't remember any "F" words or things like that.

Another movie you might want to check out is For All Mankind. It's an excellent documentary ont he race to the moon, told by the astronauts themselves (and the DVD is packed with extras).

I never saw Hanks' miniseries, so I can't tell you anything about that, but have you considered tapes specifically for young children? When our son, now 7, was younger, he loved the Snoopy and Charlie Brown tape, "The NASA Space Station" (Vol. 5 in the "This Is America, Charlie Brown" series). There's also a kids' tape called "I Wanna Be an Astronaut," but I've never seen that one. Both are available at amazon.com for about $10 each, or you might find them at your local video store.

Thanks PeterD, didn't know those were available. I've scoured the children's section of two Blockbusters and a local video store looking for something made for children -- didn't find anything.

I'll look specificaly for these titles now.

    Thanks again.

I know that there was some "adult" language used in From The Earth To The Moon, but it's been more than a year since I've seen it, and I cannot recall how much or how bad. Seems to me it wasn't all that bad or it would have stuck in my mind.
The series is exceptionally good...excellent in fact, but I highly doubt that it would hold a three-year-old's interest. When he's a few years older he will enjoy it, but three seems to me to be a bit too young for this series. There are many political issues and adult subtexts included that children can't possibly grasp.
While we're on the subject, TNT had a great mini-series several years ago, called Moon Shot which I also highly recommend. It's available on VHS.

Chris, thanks for the information. I wasn't planning on trying to keep Michael's attention focused thorughout the miniseries. I was thinking of picking just a couple of episodes that -- hopefully -- include actual footage of space walks and people walking on the moon.

I could get documentaries of this, but I was looking for something within a story-telling context. A re-enactment would be much better than just a dry recitation of facts -- especialy for someone his age.

When he was 2-and-a-half, we took him to the Houston Space Center. He stood at the rail of the Moonwalk Exhibit for 10 minutes, just drinking in the life-size diorama of a couple of astronauts standing on the moon. After the tour, he made us go back so he could stare at it for another five minutes or so. He's got a lot of interest in it, so I figure that a one-hour episode of Apollo 11 might keep him interested.

I may end up having to buy the whole miniseries in order to use just a couple of episodes. Of course as the two boys grow up, the series will become more relevant to them.

That TNT series, is it good for kids?

    Thanks again,
    Marc

Both the HBO series From The Earth To The Moon, and the TNT mini-series Moonshot are well worth having. Both are well-produced and highly entertaining docu-dramas about the US effort to reach the moon by the end of the 1960's. How would children react to them? I dunno...I suppose it depends on the child. Neither of these productions were tailored for young people, but they may very well enjoy them anyway.
There's plenty of educational material in both dramas, so anyone studying the space program would find value in them.
