Just read over at Ain't It Cool News that Tobey Maguire has been cast as everybody's favourite webslinger. I was hoping for Wes Bentley but Maguire is a cool choice...

Not that I give them too much credit....however, it might be more accurate to say that Tobey Maguire is cast as Peter Parker.....

I'll be damned. At an earlier SPIDER-MAN thread, Tobey Maguire was exactly who I picked, although Wes Bentley would probably have been okay (I see little quantitative difference between them as performers). I'm sure he won't be in the suit much (and am hoping there's more genuine stunt work than CGI stuff, a la X MEN.)

Not trying to be rude or contentious, but...Maybe Tobey Maguire will be fine, but so far he has failed to
impress me. I know some of you don’t like Leonardo
DiCaprio or Matt Damon, but I think they usually deliver complex,
textured performances.(No, I'm not suggesting them AT ALL for Spidermen. Using them as an age reference.) After watching Maguire in Pleasantville,
Cider House Rules, and Ride with the Devil, I’m not impressed.
Scripts and other actors seem to carry his movies. So far he
has seemed about as animated as unpatterned white wallpaper.
Still for you Spiderman aficionados, I hope he delivers a strong
performance.NP Just the air-conditioning

Damon would be interesting, but I think he's ALREADY too old. Some of us may be going more on what the guy LOOKS like than anything else -- Bentley and Maguire certainly LOOK like the young Peter Parker as drawn by Steve Ditko, and I for one am heartened that they're going in that direction. (The Timchanter might be willing to back me up here.) Anyway, how much money do Damon and DiCaprio command these days? If the SFX budget's going to be as high as I bet it will be, they won't want to topload the expense with another $25 million for old Leo.NP: THE PATRIOT (I am officially in love with this score)
