Which movies would you like to own on DVD, but can't because there hasn't been a release so far?

I'd love to have the following:

• The Lord of the Rings (animated; of course, the movie is baaad, but I still love it - saw it before I read the books, so it was the movie that introduced be to Tolkien's works)
• The Adventures of Robin Hood
• Captain Blood
• The Sea Hawk (all of the latter 3 feature great Korngold scores, and are also highly enjoyable movies)
• Disney's Robin Hood (yes, there's a new RC1 DVD, but this is the only case where I MUST have the German synch. Peter Ustinov did not only the English voice of Prince John, but also spoke his part in the German version. You HAVE to hear it, it's soo funny! Fortunately, a European DVD is also in the making)
• Of course, all the Star Wars and Indy movies... CE3K is supposed to come out next year, and E.T. as well, at least. And of course, we'll have Jaws tomorrow and both Jurassic Parks (although I'm only interested in the first one) later this summer
• ...

(I'll stop for now because it's long enough, although I'm sure I left off too much)

And of course, an isolated score track for each of those would be great.

NP: Anton Bruckner: Symphony #8 (Kölner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester/Günter Wand) - I catched the last 15 minutes of a great live broadcast of this work, also with Wand conducting, on TV the other day. For the few people here who know this work: Did you ever think that the finale of the last movement (after the short silence) would make for a great trailer underscore? Never occured to me before.

The movie I want on DVD more than any other movie in the world . . .

1. The Thing From Another World (Complete with film historian commentary; deleted scenes, and there are some; theatrical trailer; isolated score; behind-the-scenes footage; interviews with surviving cast and crew, though James Arness would probably not agree to do one; etc.)

Also . . .

2. Spacehunter: Adventures In the Forbidden Zone (Perhaps I would be the only who would buy it, but I don't care. I really enjoy this film and Bernstein's score. And give me the regular and 3-D version.)

3. all Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies

4. Quigley, Down Under

5. Captain Ron

6. Escape From New York and Big Trouble In Little China (Though those two are supposedly on their way, both with John Carpenter/Kurt Russell commentaries!)

7. The Magnificent Seven (Isn't that one on it's way, too?)

8. a box set called "The Ultimate Michael Dudikoff DVD Collection, which contains: The Silencer, In Her Defense, Muskteers Forever, Black Thunder, Hardball, The Shooter, Strategic Command, Bounty Hunters, Crash Dive, Chain of Command, Virtual Assassin, Soldier Boyz, all 24 episodes of Cobra, Rescue Me, American Ninja 4: The Annihilation, The Human Shield, Midnight Ride, River of Death, Platoon Leader, American Ninja 2: The Confrontation, Avenging Force, American Ninja, and the in-production Ablaze. (Each disc loaded with all the features mentioned for The Thing)

Many many more, but can't recall them at the moment.

NP: Ransom - "Delivering the Ranson" (Just picked it up today and am listening to it for the first time, so it's too early to determine a rating.)

Also, a digitally-remastered The Time Machine with Rod Taylor.

And Taylor's Dark of the Sun, complete with a brand spanking-new score composed by either (and in order) Goldsmith, Cmiral, Silvestri, or Williams. The score in the film, composed by some no-name guy I can't even recall, has got to be one of the worst scores in history. A shame, too, because it's such a great film.

NP: Ransom - "Delivering the Ranson" (Jeez! How long is this blasted track!? It seems like it's been playing for over an hour!! It just passed the 11 minute mark!!)

Uhmm, or what about... Ben Hur!? And is Spartacus already available?

NP: Anton Bruckner: Symphony #8 (Kölner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester/Günter Wand) - I'd love to have the performance I mentioned above on DVD, too. The sound was far more spatial than on the CD I'm just listening to, so you could distinguish the various instruments much better, although of course the TV broadcast didn't sound as clear as the CD.

Here's another one:

The Seven Ups with Roy Schieder. This has one of the best car chases ever filmed, waaaaaaaay better than that stinker one in The French Connection.

(Trivia note: the car driven by Roy Scheider's character was supposed to come to a screeching halt right behind the semi-truck. During the actual take, the car didn't stop quick enough, and plowed right underneath the back of the truck, removing the entire roof of the car. For the insert shot of Scheider climbing out of the car, he acted the exact same way the stunt driver did when he emerged from the car--that is, amazed he was still alive. Check it for yourself tomorrow night at 6PM on AMC.)

Also, a re-release of "Snake Eyes", with its original ending!!!!!!!

Marian and Dantoris....

I don't know if Spartacus is out yet on DVD, but there will be a Criterion Edition of the film later this year. That will be the one to own!

I'm waiting for Superman of course, and the just-announced release of Legend in November.

My BIG movie I want is Citizen Kane.

I'm still waiting for Innerspace and Gremlins 2 to be released on dvd. Both hopefully will be released soon, and will be packed with all sorts of extras.Though not great films,I have always loved them.Joe Dante is such an underrated director it amazes me.Every one of his films have been completely dismissed over the years.I would love to have director/composer commentaries on both films with Dante and goldsmith talking together about their numerous collaborations.I just think that would be really interesting.

A list:

1984- I picked this up at as a rental and I thought it was an excellent adaptation of Orwell's book. Visually stunning and captures every bleak word in Orwell's prose. Unfortunately, the VHS is out of print (even though I have long since given up VHS for DVDs)

Human Remains - An absolutely chilling documentary. Great for any history class or history buff.

Every Episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000- Yes, every single episode. From the Comedy Central days to Sci-Fi. From the Criterion Co. Man, just when I get hooked into it, the Sci-Fi Channel pulls it. Great.

Masters of Russian Animation - Because I've long given up VHS.

From the It's-Already-on-DVD-But-Should-Be-Released-Again-Anyway-Only-Better Department:
Malick's The Thin Red Line - Something the Criterion Co. needs to assemble a high-quality, extra laden disc they're known for. The disc now is barren, it doesn't even include a trailer. When a film is rumored to be 6 hours before cut down to 3 hours for release, it would be nice to have the missing footage.

Observer - I'd love all those MST3K episodes on DVD, though I already have a couple on tape (recorded and store-bought). But I'm also curious to see the first season episodes, where aired only on the local station the show originated on. I've seen a couple pictures, and they appear to make even the early low-budget Comedy Central episodes look like multi-million dollar productions in comparisons.

Matthew - I'll second Innerspace. That's one of my favorites films, and probably by favorite of all of Dante's work. Goldsmith's score is such a fun ride. And it's got Dennis Quaid, one of the best (and most underrated) actors in history. I'd love to own the DVD version. They just don't make 'em like this anymore.

NP: Sounds Exciting - "Narrow Margin: Searching the Train" *****/***** (If you love action scores, buy this Broughton promo CD NOW!!!!)

Another one I badly want on DVD (loaded with all the extras, of course) is John Carpenter's The Fog. It's still one of his best films, and has held up amazingly-well over the years (as most of his have, anyway).

NP: Escape From New York expanded - "I Heard You Were Dead" (Too early for a rating, listening to it for the first time, but at this point, I'd give it a **/*****. I'm not wild about the dialogue tracks, either!)

I want all of them on DVD. Every last frame that was ever shot anywhere. Each DVD should have as many extras as will fit including, but limited to: Storyboards, rough script drafts, auditions, documentaries, trailers, Isolated scores, web content, deleted scenes, alternate endings & rejected scores if any! It's nice to have choices.

Oh no, I forgot:
• "Mute Witness"
A great, very well-made thriller about a mute woman who sees a murder, but when she calls the police, nobody believes her. There's at least one plot twist every 10 minutes, and aside from being very thrilling, there are also a lot of very funny scenes. Plus a cameo by Alec Guinnes, whose part was filmed about 10 years before the movie was made, for an earlier draft of the script. Great score as well, by somebody I've never heard of otherwise. A score CD would be fine, too. Or, even better, an isolated score track. Probably I'll never see either of them, although I think and hope that the DVD may eventually come out; there has been a laserdisc for the movie I think.
• De Palma's The Fury
The story may be a bit too over-the-top, but the movie is just so impressively made that I can watch it over and over again. Besides, I still have to see a movie where the score works better than Williams' masterpiece for this one - a good deal of which is missing on the album (probably because it's a re-recording, which in this case works much better for the CD, because the tempoes of the original recording are so strongly tied to the visuals).

NP: Presumed Innocent (Williams)

There are too many to count, but I would definitely start with some of Robert Altman's films... McCabe and Mrs. Miller (which I refused to watch in a horrible, muddy, panned and scanned transfer last night), Images with an isolated score track, Three Women with the same...

A good start would be for M*A*S*H to be released with a remastered picture and with both the original mono track as well as Chase's surround sound mix, which is how the film has been available on video for a while.

...at least Nashville is coming out soon...

Marian -

While I think that Donaggio's scores are more effective for Carrie, Dressed To Kill, Blow Out and Body Double, I do feel that The Fury is Williams' most effective score. I would love to see a DVD of The Fury, with an isolated stereo score.

Ah, Dressed to Kill! Or what about Blow Out; being a movie about sounds, it would be great to have a remastered audio track. I'm ashamed to say that I still haven't seen Carrie, or Body Double. Or Sisters, which you mentioned above. Hell, not even Snake Eyes! How can I call De Palma one of my favourite directors?

Oh, and I just checked the IMDb: There is indeed a Spartacus DVD, running 196 minutes. The IMDb states that the restored movie is 198 minutes long, but the 2 "missing" minutes are probably only a inaccurate info on the DVD cover. The disc even features a DD 5.1 audio track, but unfortunately it isn't anamorphic, so it doesn't take full advantage of the possible DVD resolution.

Indy, Star Wars, Back to the Future, Godfather, are all coming in 2001 along with Schindlers List and Close Encounters...you dont have long to wait.

Spartacus: Criterion Ed this christmas, 2 disc anamorphic release of the old Criterion LD.

This year is an amazing year for releases, you would not believe the amount ot movies coming out on DVD between now and Christmas...

Dan (UK)

PS: A new dual Dolby Digital/DTS release of Thin Red Line is coming to DVD this Christmas, it MAY have some new supplements.

Indy was due this year, but instead they wanted to hold it back until next Spring because Raiders will be 20 years old next year, so they want to do an anniversary thing.

Star Wars is coming next year, starting with Phantom Menace: Special Ed. Eps 4 to 6 will follow and we should have them by the end of next year.

Lucas himself has said right now he's so busy he's unsure if he's working on the Ep1 DVD, or Episode 2! Fox and Lucasfilm also confirm the DVDs are coming...

Can't wait!

Now the only things that are missing to accompany this are a complete Phantom Menace score release, a complete Indy 2, Indy 3, and the remaining 6 minutes (or so) that were dropped from the expanded CD version of Raiders (I'd really like to have them, not just for completeness, but because I like the music). Mr. Matessino, Mr. Bozerau, are you listening?

And oh how would I love to have isolated score tracks for all of them. Wedge, what became of your Star Wars Iso Score campaign?

THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL, with both endings. (The European version goes on for a couple of minuts longer than the American; that ending was also used for the US TV version, I have no idea why.)

PAPILLON with isolated score, the documentary that's already on there, commentary from Dustin Hoffman if possible (he's practically the only actor from that movie who's still alive!), and the scenes that were cut from the final version (in fact a still from one of them was used as the COVER of the Japanese LD -- while on the run in South America, Antonio shows Papillon how to dig for turtle eggs in the beach, and they feast on them.)

The original KING KONG, plus all the available footage from the aborted movie that preceded it, CREATION.

The original Japanese GODZILLA, with audio commentary by -- me! (Why not, they got some professor guy to do audio for the SEVEN SAMURAI laser. He did know his stuff, I must admit.)

NP: X-MEN
