Well Folks I just saw The Patriot, and it was worth seeing, but man was it lame in some parts. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but cheasy, PC, and over the top scenes were too many. A decent film that could have been great fell short once again. But it was fun, as for the score, I consider it John's worst yet, there is no theme really, just noise in the background that only adds the neccesary punch, nothing more, which is not the John WIlliams I know of. ALl in all, a worthy movie that is wayy too similar to bravheart, but has some bitchin fight scenes in the first hour or so. I am going to see the Perfect Storm tommorow

Please tell me, DjC, is The Patriot as grisly and gory as some reviewers have said? It is for this reason that my wife doesn't want to see it.posted 07-02-2000 08:01 PM PT (US)

Well Chris, if u have seen Saving Private Ryan, than Patriot is a cake walk. It is fairly violent, and there are a few scenes that are gruesome, but compared to SPR, nothing of the sort. Women like this movie for some reason, i was turned off by the PCness, but women like this movie for the daughter/father realtionships involved. Go see it, she will like it.

I keep reading mentions of PCness. Could you give an example of political correctness in the movie? Haven't seen it yet, trying to decide whether or not to wait for the video.Marc

Marc - Some of the characters seem created just to cover all the demographic bases. In Mel's militia group, there is a minister, a bigoted red neck (who learns a valuable moral lesson), a noble black man, etc. The one scene that really stuck out like a sore thumb to me was one where Mel's oldest son tries recruiting men for the militia in a church. Noone really responds to him, but then a girl who he is interested in suddenly stands up and basically takes the men (including her father) to task for not standing up for their beliefs and ideals. Don't get me wrong, I am completely for strong female characters, but would anyone really listen to her in 1776? I doubt it. The scene is saved from being completely bogus by John Williams' score which makes it downright moving.Overall, the film is predictable at times and doesn't always work, but I liked it. The battle scenes boasted some terrific digital effects work and the cinematography by Caleb Deschanel was gorgeous. If you see it in the theater, find a WIDE screen.

I find that interesting from a purely story-telling POV.WW2 movies always had the same characters in the platoon, that was supposed to convey a cross-section of the USA during that fight.
This device soon got carried over to some Sci-fi action plots (see ALIENS). I even noticed it in Maximus' team in GLADIATOR. The tree-hugger-type guy got eliminated (chopped) pretty quick in that one.
