I can believe Spielberg green-lighted AMERICAN BEAUTY and was behind the producers of it and let it get made. Argh!

Why not THE GREEN MILE? Darabont is one of the favorite directors, and the film was his best yet. A brilliant piece of work that unfairly went unrewarded.

well, I thought American Beauty was one hell of a movie, so I don't mind that it won.
Of course, I also thought that Sixth Sense and Green Mile were great. only one award to give, sadly.

and heck, one of my VERY favorites of the year -- Three Kings -- went unnoticed by just about everyone.

Well, in my opinion, "American Beauty" was the best and most stunning movie of the year. Of course, I love the gritty suburbia- type setting (like "The Ice Storm", one of my favorite movies ever, and probably better than "American Beauty" but not by much) and the acting was superb (Kevin Spacey is just a phenomonal actor.) While the other movies in the category were, no doubt, terrific, I still think "American Beauty" deserved it. If I had to choose which movie I'd give the award to over "American Beauty," I'd pick "The Insider." Another stunning movie. Anyway, I'm done rambling.

I agree with JJ on that one. And, dex---Darabont has only directed 3 theatrical films. The comment seems a little bit of a stretch. How about "He's keepin' up the good work?" or something to that effect.

About the only thing that this year's Academy Awards has taught me is that the cinematography in The Insider was exquisite. The cell phone on the beach scene was priceless. Spinotti is a genius.

Haley Joel Osment went home empty-handed TWICE...first he lost the Golden Globe to Cruise and tonight he lost the Oscar to Caine.
At least Caine had the wisdom to realize that he shouldn't have won...I was hoping that he also possessed the sheer COURAGE of (Ir)Ving Rhames, who gave his Emmy to Jack Lemmon!
Caine already has an Oscar. If I had been HIM, I would have marched out into the audience and pressed that statuette into Osment's hands!

Now THAT would've been a memorable moment!

Sheesh. Come on--life isn't that schmaltzy.

Caine has dignity....I mean, personally, I was looking for Michael Clark Duncan to win, and held my breath when "Michael..." was announced. However...I think after an extremely eventful and dignified career such as Caine's, the honorable thing to do would be accept gratefully, and get on with it. Duncan and Osment are fantastic, but all the nominees have got the opportunity to go out there and do it again. (I should like to have seen Cruise win a few years back for "Jerry Maguire", but that didn't pan out, alas....) To the future--the best is still out there.

Osmett is only 11 years old. It's obvious he's got a lot of talent, enough to be around for quite awhile, so he'll get plenty more opportunities to win an Oscar.

Well what can I say, hmmm, I can not complain American Beauty one. a) Mendes is British and b) it was a great film. In my dreams Green Mile won, and in another dream Magnolia was actually nominated and won!

Enjoyed Michael Cane's speech. Again, ya for a Brit, though again in my dreams Mike Duncan won.

American Beauty did NOT deserve it's cinematography oscar IMHO.

One of the funniest moments had to be Billy Crystal's "what the people are thinking" thing.

Michael Caine: "I liked Jaws 4."

Judi Dench: "This thong is killing me!" (definately the funniest part of the routine)

Michael Duncan: "I see white people!" (the second funniest line)

Jack Nicholson: "I am the coolest guy in the room."

Oh hey, forgot to mention my thoughts on Crystal. He did good I thought, in fact the overall production this year was done farily well. Ran on a bit, I mean, it started at 2:30am my way and then finished 4hrs later. I've still got no sleep!

"I see white people" was my fave gag.

I really loved it too. I also loved the opening sequence with Billy Crystal interspersed (sp?) into those classic clips.

Yeah, "I see white people" was great!
I have yet to see American Beauty, but for me, Fight Club was the best movie of the year (from what I've seen), and one of the best movies of the last years. But of course, it didn't even get a nomination, though that doesn't surprise me.

IMHO, I think American Beauty was the easy choice for best picture. I can't recall a moment in that movie where I wasn't completly blown over by everything. I just wished it would have won more. I still really liked the rest of the nominees. Here are my ranking:

    1. American Beauty
    2. The Cider House Rules
    3. The Sixth Sense
    4. The Green Mile
    5. The Insider (never saw it)

NP - American Beauty (shocking huh?)

Out of that bunch ... let's see ... in order ...

    THE SIXTH SENSE
    THE GREEN MILE
    THE CIDER HOUSE RULES
    AMERICAN BEAUTY
THE INSIDER (I didn't see it either) (how did it get nominated? Did anyone actually SEE it or did it just look important? For instance, I'm not sure anyone on the whole Board saw it except for Andre! Well, someone else did, he was going on about the Spinotti photography ... You know how hard Michael Mann had to fight to get Spinotti accepted by the studio to shoot LAST OF THE MOHICANS? He started out with Doug Milsome [ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES], whom Mann made so miserable that the guy simply quit -- that's how he got them to approve Spinotti. True story. Look at the Mann profile in either GQ or Esquire at the time.)

    H Rocco,
I saw "The Insider," and it was absolutely fantastic. Al Pacino is one of the best actors, and he does an excellent job in this movie. But the real star is Russel Crowe, who is just amazing. It certainly deserved to be nominated, but "American Beauty," in my opinion, deserved to be the winner. Still, "The Insider" was fantastic. How I rank the nominees:

    "American Beauty"
    "The Insider"
    "The Sixth Sense"
    "The Green Mile"
"The Cider House Rules" (haven't seen it, though I'm reading the novel.)

Russell Crowe was the best thing about The Insider. I was a disappointed to see him not win Best Actor, but I like Kevin Spacey (who's fantastic no matter how bad the movie he's in is).
