It looks like a French company is finally going to release one of my Holy Grail scores, Michel Legrand's Three Musketeers. Here's a link to a French site announcing it: http://www.underscores.fr/index.php/2009/05/news-ecoutez-le-cinema/
I don't think this was ever issued on CD. It's a great score with an opening using thrumming bass strings and stacato trumpets, a bouncy action theme for sword fights and galloping horses and a rather trite love theme that actually matches the rather trite romances portrayed on the screen. It even manages to highlight some of the more humorous moments in George MacDonald Fraser's (of Flashman fame) script.
Peter: Is this something you think your store will handle? I heard it was due for release on June 8.
Also, the CD will include Legrand's rejected score for Robin and Marian.

Legrand's THE THREE MUSKETEERS was issued on CD back in 1991 on the BayCities label.
http://www.soundtrackcollector.com/catalog/soundtrackdetail.php?movieid=6571I have that disc and I imagine the reissue will contain the same tracks with the addition of the Legrand's rejected score for ROBIN & MARIAN.
I wouldn't call Legrand's "love themes" trite. The cue "To Love A Queen" has to be one of his most beautiful melodies.

It's ben a looooong time since I listened to the LP, as that is all I have. I must've missed the CD that was released in 91. BTW the score listed for sale for $10.99 at Amazon is the Michael Kamen score for the more recent version of the story. Elsewhere, the 1991 CD of the 1973 film is listed at $80.The only love theme music I could remember were the wood flutes used for the Raquel Welch scenes.
I sure wish Legrand had signed on for the Four Musketeers. I didn't care for Schifirn's score at all.

You'd be interested to know Legrand scored THE THREE MUSKETEERS in something like 14 days. The Anchor Bay DVD of THE THREE MUSKETEERS/THE FOUR MUSKETEERS features an archival film on the making of THE THREE MUSKETEERS and shows Legrand conducting the score. It was there that he says he scored the film in a very short length of time.
I imagine with all the legal hassles that ensued regarding the sequel (as no one knew they were going to split the film into 2 movies and the cast sued the producers), Legrand was probably already committed to other projects by the time it was to be scored.
