I'm re-listening to most of my 2008 scores whilst compiling a 'Best of 08' compilation, and I realised that 4 of my favourite scores from last year came in annoying cardboard boxes, rather than standard jewel cases.Wall-E
Benjamin Button
Indiana Jones and the KOTCS
Prince CaspianIs this the way things are heading?
Is it a price issue?
Or are they trying to save the planet? My gripe lies with the fact that wear and tear is very visible on the cover, and irreversible. With jewel cases, the plastic box takes most of the damage, and can be changed at will, leaving your scores looking nice. With these new covers, I often find myself leaving the Benjamin Button box indoors and just taking the CD to my car, the prevent dog ears etc.

Bought any MovieScoreMedia releases yet?I don't know what these slim cardboard boxes will look like after 20 years, but some of my CDs/inserts from 1987 look fantastic, and all it took was replacing the jewel case... I know some of my earliest digipacks have the plastic insert coming off, and how do you replace those when the teeth break??

Yes this is really staring to get fustrating.
Benjamin Button's packaging is cheaper than carboard it feels like plain paper.
Theres just no way to properly store them to last for decades without wear and tear.
What can we do?

Here in Germany, all of those scores mentioned come in jewel cases, those new ones with the round edges. So no problem here.

Seems that they don't care about customers

While I don't prefer digipaks, I buy plastic sleeves to put them in and they keep just fine. I use them on those CDs that have the cardboard sleeves too. It keeps them nice on my shelves.James
Here's a link to where I get mine. I live close enough to their store that I can buy them there, but you can order online:

I thought companies were doing this cause it's that whole GREEN thing thats going on, better for the enviroment and they probably cost a tad cheaper, or I could be wrong, who knows.

I have used records from the 70s that I've listened to fairly frequently whose original cardboard sleeves (or boxes in a couple cases) are still in pristine condition, so I think it just comes down to how much care you take in handling your music. I'm not sure what it is about paper-based packaging in the digital age that apparently makes it more difficult for people to maintain. Perhaps since the media is so much smaller its easier to abuse? Anyway, a jewel case will certainly come in handy if there's a fluke accident of some sort, but when it comes to everyday wear and tear, I don't understand why everyone else is having such a problem with cardboard packaging. It can't be that everyone is just more irresponsible than I am, because my room is a mess. What I don't understand is when a label like Nonesuch or ECM puts their CDs out in a jewel case surrounded by a cardboard sleeve that looks identical to the insert. That seems both excessive and redundant.

In that poll 55% said they wanted jewel cases, the remaining 45 were in favor of digipaks. If we change to jewel cases, the other half who prefers digipaks will be dissatisfied.
I love digipaks because they look so much more beautiful than jewel cases. All you have to do is, like another poster here just mentioned, take good care of your CDs. I don't remember anyone complaining about LPs not being packaged in hard plastic boxes...
