Remember these kinds of threads? I liked 'em... a nice updates on what people were getting into, with some good running discussions too.

Anyone buy anything in a store today? No mail service on Sundays, so I know nobody got anything via post today... but who knows, maybe there's still a music store with a decent soundtrack section near you.

    Looking forward to the discussions...

    My latest listens:

    Death of a Salesman (Kritzerland)

I appreciate this Alex North rarity more than I actually enjoy it, due to the archival sound. The solemn writing for winds sounds good, and there's this bittersweet recurring waltz-like theme that is particularly lovely, but whenever the jazz portions kick in, it gets awfully shrill. Yes, this was mentioned in the CD description, and I understand this is actually a vast improvement compared to what it sounded like before, as the liner notes state, but I wonder how archival something can sound and still be sold? Of course, it can be said it's better to have something than nothing, and certainly the Rosenthal portion has great sound. It's just something to think about.

    Johnny Mandel Trio (FSM)

Picked this up out of curiosity and it's a terrific package. I hadn't heard much of Mandel before this, and on my first few listens what I dig about his music is his knack for melody and just how precise and sharp his orchestration is. There's no padding here. He's always doing something, even in the low-key portions of The Sandpiper. The sound is stellar. Immensely listenable and enjoyable.

    Dark of the Sun (FSM)

This was another first for me and I enjoyed it as much as if not more than the Mandel set. Edgy. Jazzy. Great main theme. It's a bold, well-rounded score, and makes for a terrific album.

Well, the current economic crisis has crippled my collecting lately. What, with Virgin going out of business, Barnes & Nobles' electronics section being taken over by DVD and Blu-Ray, and 1,000,000 copies of Guns N' Roses Chinese Democracy filling up Best Buy (don't they sell anything else???), I'm having a tough time finding soundtracks anywhere!

So, I've just been listening to my Indy box set, and my new iPod, which has the classics in rotation.

I don't know what's more surprising: that stores still stock soundtracks, or that you still look for them there. Why put yourself through all that?

Brian May's Sky Pirates arrived recently. It took forever from Australia that by the time I got it I wondered why I was getting a pacakage from Australia, and couldn't remember that I ordered anything! Bad.

    On the way:
    Chattaway - Missing In Action
Rozsa - Golden Voyage of Sinbad
Rozsa - Time After Time (FSM)

You know, speaking of stores, I went into an FYE the other day and was looking around in their used section, and I don't get why music and movie stores are not totally online these days.

Their new still is STILL 17.99+ and I just don't get that...Best Buy is at least 13.99 and crap, if you want a CD, be like me and shop Amazon and MovieMusic.

    way of Transformers...but, maybe it's
    just me...

Most recent and beloved = Hellboy (Marco Beltrami)

There is some really beautiful music in this score, tracks that you would never have guessed came from a 'superhero' movie.

I haven't bought much these past two months on the Cd front. I find the more I hold off diving in to grab a copy of the latest limited edition release (before they all go), the more objective I am about the next round. I may have finally reached the stage where I'll buy the soundtracks I have very strong reason to believe I'll like, and leave the rest as they are.
