Saw it at QoS as well. I'm having heavy mixed feelings. During the opening (the Kirk/police chase) I thought it was one of those silly adds about turning off your cell phone during a movie -- and was subsequently upset at the thought that the Star Trek trailer hadn't been in front of this particular print of QoS. The whole thing seemed rather large, so I'm definitely going to have to give it another look when it finds itself available on Quicktime. That said, I think it looks like a cross between Attack of the Clones and the Lost in Space movie (which isn't as bad a compliment from me, considering I think both of those movies look very nice).I'm remaining cautiously optimistic.

Haha when I saw the trailer I thought it was an ad too and then had a brief moment of wtfness.I'm cautiously optimistic about this as well. It seems like many of the "re-imaginings" are turning out quite well. Star Trek could use a new dose of creativity.

Andrew: I disagree with pretty much everything you wrote there: Where it becomes definitely more sophisticated than a mere commercial comes from the shot where Kirk leaps from the Corvette in slow-motion--Rob Cohen/Michael Bay/whomever-else who is being seen as influential here doesn't have that kind intuition anywhere in their creative bones. At the same time, I'm a rabid Star Trek fan, so I knew a little of what was coming in the trailer. Regardless, I think it looks incredible and the scale of it is stunning; Giacchino also did a great job in the music editing here. I hope he doesn't mess this up.[Message edited by sean on 11-17-2008]

So using slow motion during a key detail of a scene is a sign of a great filmmaker for Sean! You must love the cinema of Peter Jackson!

I knew when I wrote that part you would jump on it! Jokes, of course. My point was this: I've heard a few people describe the opening as if it were from losers like Michael Bay/Rob Cohen, and judging from that short opener, it's all covered very well and everything is visible (ie. no hand-helds, no shaky cams, none of that usual rubbish) and the footage is edited very nicely, separating it from falling into the Bay/Cohen crap: Both of whom, and many others like them!, have trouble even filming an explosion clearly.

In the second half, it's a trailer music company's attempt to not sound like 'War Begins' from CHILDREN OF DUNE. So sueable, if Tyler was so inclined.

Okay.Saw the trailer and have a few quibbles. That the movie is going to be a "reboot" of the series is well-covered territory; but I am getting the feeling that this is going to go through, buffet-style, picking which parts of canon it wants and which it doesn't. That kinda bugs me. Too many instances are occurring just in the trailer for a lifelong fan not to notice, not least of which is the notion that the Federation encounters the Romulans BEFORE the events of the classic TOS episode "Balance Of Terror". That's just a fact.
I am beginning to realize that I will have to accept it for what it is to enjoy it, and maaybe take my cue from Trek itself by putting it in a Mirror Universe context.

It DOES look big, though; and it further looks like they're trying really, really hard - and with a budget - which are things that not all of the previous Trek films can say. I look forward to Giachinno's work as well.
My biggest problem? If they want to rethink Kirk as a troubled adolescent, or JD, or whatever, oh well....I'll deal. But he was a maverick, not Maverick from TOP GUN! Seriously, between the motorcycle ride and him peering up at the Enterprise under construction, it felt like a direct lift from 1986. Add/substitute jets landing OR "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins and you're there. Wonder if he has Daddy issues, too.

Someone was saying on a message board somewhere that a trailer music company was taking credit for the 'score'. Since it was so obviously like Tyler's music, I figured they must have done a near-direct knock off. But this could just be the kind of rumour that flies around on message boards - there may be no substance to it. (Unless they're responsible for that Edward Scissorhand-sy piece that plays under Bruce Greenwood's voiceover.)

I know I am going to get yelled at for this, but I have to say, as a non-Star Trek fan (I've never seen any of the movies/TV shows), this trailer did absolutely nothing for me.First off, comparing this to Michael Bay? Really? That guy doesn't use slow motion all that much, but if you want to compare the slow motion stuff to someone, compare it to John Woo. His movies would be close to 10 minutes long without the slow motion (sure it was cool in Broken Arrow and Face/Off, but after that it's just terrible). And Rob Cohen? Come on now, no one is THAT bad except for one person... Rob Cohen.
Second, something about this trailer just seemed off. It didn't look like I'd imagine a Star Trek film to look and I can't quite place my finger on why. Maybe it's just too bright or something. But it really does look like a cross between Lost In Space and the trailer for Terminator Salvation for some reason.
But to be fair, there's not really any previews lately that I really like. Everything seems like everything else. As I pointed out in the thread for the Changeling trailer music, the preview for that movie made me chuckle, and I love Clint Eastwood movies. But too many trailers are alike now. You have your "oooo what is this?!" shocker opening, and then loud dramatic music for the last 30 seconds of the trailer to get everyone excited. Then maybe some dramatic dialogue too, or in the Changeling case, Angelina Jolie pitching a fit screaming she wants her kid back (Ransom anyone?).

(Unless they're responsible for that Edward Scissorhand-sy piece that plays under Bruce Greenwood's voiceover.)Paramount licensed "War Begins" from Brian's CHILDREN OF DUNE because "Down With The Enterprise" was deemed too similiar. They also recorded a loop of "War Begins" in L.A. specifically for the trailer. The music is a combination of all of those cues and more.
As for Sean thinking Michael Giacchino had anything to do with the editing of the music for the trailer, perhaps Sean should read up on how trailers are made so he can look like less of an idiot!

To be fair Clayton, Jolie screams, "I want my son back!"
If you've seen the film or at least know the story the context of her dialogue is more believable.

[/B]lol very true. And I am 100% possitive that the actual film (Changeling) is much better than the previews make it out to be. Not that they really make it out to be bad, it's just the same exact formula that keeps getting used. Same goes for the music, as I believe that's the 4th or 5th time that specific music was used for the climax of a trailer.

As a long time Trek fan...and adamant that the feel and characters of the original show and movies was superior (yes, even better than TNG) I must say that this trailer gave me goosebumps.I know it is only a trailer, but I have feeling it will be an excellent reboot of classic characters and material. My only fear is that Orci & Kurtzman try and squeeze too much content in, but so far so good.
As for standouts, I got the most enjoyment out of the snippets from Pegg and Urban. When I see Urban in stills (with the dark hair neatly combed over) it is eerie how much he invokes memories of a young DeForest Kelly. His dialogue in the trailer is great:
"Space is death and disease wrapped in darkness and silence," (or something like that) spoken with the normal level of sarcastic disdain so common of Bones.
As for the comments about brightness and not looking like Star Trek, well I disagree. If anything, this looks more like classic Trek than ever, but with the toys of our modern cinematic tricks with a throwback feel.
Bring it on.

Let's continue. Sources: You mean, trekmovie.com/? They've been pretty reliable and have had some awesome exclusives... But, as for music editing, who cares.
