Hey everyone,Upon receiving "Boys From Brazil," I am interested in more Schaffner/Goldsmith projects.
I was looking at "Patton" and "Planet of the Apes."
I know there are more than a few editions out there, what ones would I go after?
Thanks!

Do you have Lionheart? That one would be at the top of my list. Patton and Planet of the Apes are more important in terms of film scoring milestones, but I love the hell out of Lionheart. Give me lots of French Horn, a big sweeping orchestra with some soaring strings, a couple of strong Goldsmith melodies, and I am set. Really, I don't ask for much.

Lionheart is frankly one of my favorite Goldsmith scores..probably top 3 if I had to list.

Lionheart is a good blood and thunder score. Some great action cues (of Goldsmith's 80s sound), and a few trademark themes as well.Patton is probably my favorite score of his. It has a maturity and style that really set the tone for his approach in the 70s and features two amazing themes (the march for Patton and Germany). The Varese re-recording with Goldsmith conducting is a great release, especially if you prefer a newer sound. Naturally the FSM will be the way to go if you want the film tracks, but be aware that the release is sold out and doesn't feature the excellent concert version of "The German March".
Also check out Aaron Copland's "Billy the Kid" Suite if you enjoy Patton.
You also can't go wrong with Papillon. The main theme is gorgeous, and is used wonderfully throughout the score. It was released on Universal France I think...
Either way, it's a must (that and Patton are your best bets I'd say).Planet of the Apes is a groundbreaking score, but there isn't as much to grab on in terms of melody if that's what you're jonesing for. Varese's current release is the only one out there I think (that's in print).
Islands in the Stream is also very good, but I'd seek that out after Patton and Papillon.

I was kind of underwhelmed by Papillion outside of the wonderful theme.

I would say if you have the means with which to play it, the best version of Patton out there is the original LP, which was its own recording and you can still find at a decent price. The FSM CD is pretty definitive with respect to the film tracks, but I like Goldsmith's album arrangements. I am not a big fan of the Varese recording, which has the trumpet triplet echoes performed live with the orchestra instead of being tracked through the echoplex, which is a big part of the sonic identity of that score. On the other hand, while Goldsmith's recording of Islands in the Stream is okay, it doesn't have the beauty of the original. Hopefully someday we'll get the film tracks of this. The Varese edition of Planet of the Apes is, in my opinion, the best edition of this score, which while harsh, is certainly distinctive and fascinating, especially considering that all those crazy ape sounds are produced acoustically.
Definitely try to find Lionheart. I don't think that you'll be disappointed.

I always thought that Goldsmith best score was Star trek the motion picture.

2. Poltergeist
3. Legend
4. Final Conflict
5. Blue Max
6. In Harms Way
7. Rambo II
8. Night Crossing
9. Papillon
10. Star Trek, and several others
also in top 20 Capricorn One, Alien, Patton, Tora, Tora, Tora, Hour of Gun, Rio Conchos, Omen, First Blood, Swarm and many others.J.

In no particular order or rank:Islands in the Stream
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
The Blue Max
In Harm's Way
The Prize
Rio Conchos
Poltergeist
In Like Flint
The Wind and the Lion
The Great Train RobberyThere are a number of great Goldsmith scores beyond these 10 (Freud, Chinatown, The Sand Pebbles, etc) but I feel that these are his best 10. I would also add that Goldsmith wrote a number of fine TV themes (The Waltons, The Man from UNCLE, Room 222, Barnaby Jones, and Star Trek: Voyager) and his scores for episodes of the television shows The Twilight Zone and Thriller are just as good as anything he did in the 10 films listed above.
