I've been meaning to put this together for ages. Over the years some of my favourite pieces of moviemusic involve scenes of flying, and I thought I'd find enough of them to make a CD out of it. Sure enough, I made 2, with loads leftover.

The inclusion criteria were that the scene must involve a character, vehicle (or the audience e.g. Angels in America) flying. Most of the tracks were easy to remember, due to their names, while others only made sense once I had seen them on screen.

I tried to start of quietly, with the first CD hopefully being something I could play during lunch without it getting too loud or intrusive - so the louder pieces are towards the end of the CD. The 2nd CD is then overall more bombastic.

    In-Flight MovieMusic

    CD1 - 'Weightlessness'

    01. E.T. - Flying (John Williams) 3:23
    02. Angels in America - Main Title (Thomas Newman) 2:18

    06. Finding Neverland - The Kite (Jan A.P. Kaczmarek) 1:37
    07. We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story - Flying Forward in Time [edit] (James Horner) 4:27
    08. Wall-E - Define Dancing (Thomas Newman) 2:23
    09. Superman - The Flying Sequence (John Williams) 4:17

    20. Supergirl - Flying Ballet [edit] (Jerry Goldsmith) 4:17
    21. Jurassic Park - Journey to the Island [edit] 3:15
    22. An American Tail - Flying Away and End Credits (James Horner) 5:59

    Total Time: 78:15

    Track notes:
All OST unless otherwise specified. Edits involve simple trimming from start or end of track.
01 - Used the 1982 OST version since it's still my favourite.
03 - Joel McNeely re-recording used due to better sound quality and less orchestra noise.
09 - John Debney re-recording used in view of shorter track without 'Can You Read My Mind' stuff
13 - Greatest Hits (Sony Classical) suite used since I think it's the best representation of the theme.

    Notes:
01 - Greatest Hits (Sony) suite used as after editing the track on the OST it was too short.
18 - Music is part of the long suite on the OST, but I took this track from the complete score

    ::

Left off the compilation, for reasons of sound quality, loudness and lack of space:

Always - Dorinda Solo Flight (John Williams)
Around the World in 80 days - The Balloon Chase (Trevor Jones)
Bee Movie - Barry Flies Out (Rupert Gregson-Williams)
Dragonheart - Flight to Avalon (Randy Edelman)
Drop Zone - Too Many Notes (Varese 25th edit) - (Hans Zimmer)
Flightplan - Mother and Child (James Horner)
Forever Young - Test Flight (Jerry Goldsmith)
Galaxy Quest - Shuttle to Planet (David Newman)
Paulie - Paulie Medley (John Debney)
Raiders of the Lost Ark - Flight to Peru (John Williams)
Serenity - Prep for Flight (David Newman)
The Empire Strikes Back - Hyperspace (John Williams)
The Man Without a Face - Flying (James Horner)
The Matrix - Ontological Shock (Don Davis)
The Pagemaster - The Flying Dragon (James Horner)
    Valiant - Valiant (George Fenton)

Whilst compiling it I stumbled across a similarly themed compilation issued by Varese in 2005 - 'The High and the Mighty' - A Century of Flight.... there's some overlap but I think they're distinct enough. http://www.moviemusic.com/soundtrack/highandthemightycentury

Now I need to find time to design a cover.

    A great coupla compilations, Camillu.

What about an addition of a track from Shore's THE AVIATOR. "H-1 Racer Plane" or "The Way of the Future" would be my suggestions although I haven't heard the entire score due to not owning it yet.

Ooops...went through the list too quick. I just saw you did put a selection from the Scorsese epic in there. My bad.

I went with that track from Aviator because it's my favourite part of the score. And I spent a while playing around with the order of CD1, and eventually that slotted in nicely because the piano at the end is then followed by the opening piano from The Rocketeer.

That's a great compliation you made there. You've got me thinking of making one of my own (since I'm a aviation nut).

Funnily enough, there were no Elfman tracks I could find which seemed to fit. He's the only major composer missing (as in major chunk of my collection).

Great list...how about "Attack of the Batwing" as an Elfman inclusion?

I know I was mistaken on the AVIATOR thing, but I didn't think I saw DINOTOPIA on your list, Camillu. Most notably, the "Skybax Dawn Flight" track. I was always fond of that one.

What's different about the Varese version?

The Varese 25th edit contains the most prominent 4 minutes of the 10 minute track found on the ost.
