Hey Guys,
I got the new Randy Edelman Mummy CD today and I was wondering something. When it comes to buying soundtracks these days which is it you lean towards the most? The standard good old CD or the digital download. Are we starting to see the end of the physical CD?
Just wondering and thanks.[Message edited by Pwesty on 07-31-2008]

If it's something I only have an inkling of interest in, I'll sample it with a few tracks from iTunes; if I like it enough, I'll download the entire album. These days, I only reserve physical album buys for my favorites: any FSM/Varese Club/Intrada release that catches my eye, Zimmer, Goldenthal, T. Newman, Elfman, Beltrami, Marianelli, Williams (but that might have stopped after Crystal Skull), Shore, and the occasional Doyle if the project is interesting.[Message edited by nuts_score on 07-31-2008]

I only buy from online services (iTunes or Amazon) if the tracks are (a) in iTunes Plus or otherwise 256+ kbps, and (b) if the price is competitive with the CD. Especially considering Amazon Marketplace, rarely are both of these the case, so I don't often buy digitally. Perhaps a single track here and there (and even then I typically sort out only the iTunes Plus results).

Certain composers will garner a CD purchase for me: This year is an all time low for me in purchasing an actual CD (new scores, though, not counting re-releases/remastered/or FSM/special editions)... I've only bought Indiana Jones 4 and The Dark Knight in hard-copy; I intend to add Wanted to that list--as for the rest of the year, I can only see myself picking up Goldsmith's Stargate Continuum, Arnold's Quantum Of Solace, and McCreary's Sarah Connor Chronicles (also, I'm sure, there's certain scores/films that I'm not even aware of yet that will peek my interest in getting the actual CD). iTunes Plus has been great. I've downloaded Speed Racer and Standard Operating Procedure from it.[Message edited by sean on 07-31-2008]

The CD of coarse! Why would you settle for a format that compromises sound quality? If you really need MP3s for an Ipod or something then you can always rip the disc to your desired bitrate, and then you'll have both the quality CD and MP3s. It does'nt work the other way around I'm afraid.

The only thing I'll accept an mp3 for are those complete scores that will never see the light of day. Even then I would prefer lossless rips of those (which can be hard to get but not impossible). For an officially released soundtrack definitely a pressed CD is what I want. Screw the CD-R or digital download bit.

Question, when will La-La-Land Records offer downloads of their albums? I know doing so on something like Godzilla or Masters of the Universe may not make sense, but surely ones like the seasons of BSG or The Sarah Connor Chronicles and the DC Universe movies would make sense.
